History

Ancient Origin and Schism

The Heavenly Court and Buddhist Sect originated from a single ancient order ruled by the Three Buddhas and Three Venerables. Cultivators of divine abilities pursued unity between heaven and humanity, while those who followed karma sought Fleshly Sainthood 882.

After the Three Buddhas and Three Venerables vanished, the unified order descended into conflict. The divine-ability lineage retained the Nine Provinces and the complete immortal inheritance, becoming the modern Heavenly Court; the karma-based lineage withdrew and became the Buddhist Sect 882.

The Court’s control of the Nine Provinces allowed it to repeatedly suppress the Buddhist Sect, which was nearly exterminated several times and survives largely through concealment and resistance 882.

The Fall of Cloud Dream

The Heavenly Court summoned the Cloud Dream Immortal Lord, who did not return for tens of thousands of years. It later declared that he had committed crimes against Heaven, executed him, branded his disciples traitors, and ordered the destruction of his Dao tradition 725.

Heavenly forces destroyed Cloud Dream Mountain’s gates, cultivation grounds, and sacred teaching sites. A new leader was installed under Heavenly Court authority; those who submitted were spared, while resisters were killed and the former inheritance was systematically erased 725.

A later Cloud-Dream Palace Lord recounted reaching the Southern Heaven Gate and being overwhelmingly defeated by a gatekeeping heavenly general. He accepted Heavenly Court recruitment, abandoned his former title as Cloud Dream Immortal Lord, and became the Palace Lord governing the region on the Court’s behalf 775.

Dispute over Jiang Yuechu

After Jiang Yuechu killed the Heavenly Court-recognized Little Heavenly General, Sky-Patrol Bureau official Xu Ming sought to recruit her. She subsequently killed the Heavenly Court-appointed Cloud-Dream Palace Lord, prompting Xu Ming to urge her to enter the Court and obtain official protection 762 784. Director Cao then arranged a Principal Ninth Rank appointment and entry into the Immortal Register before the ordinary reporting process could leave her exposed to prosecution as an outsider 786.

The matter later resurfaced when Immortal Official Xuan Luan sought retribution for his slain disciple. Invoking the Heavenly Emperor’s permission, Xuan Luan and allied divine generals pressed the Cloud Province Sky-Patrol Bureau to surrender Jiang Yuechu 908. When she could not be found, Sky-Patrol personnel were punished and Xu Ming was tortured and displayed in chains on the Cloud Province Prefecture city wall 970.

Jiang Yuechu returned after learning of her colleagues’ treatment. Feng Linxi, Greedy Wolf Star Lord, and Whitebrow Abbot intervened; facing their opposition, the divine general ordered Xu Ming released 970 972 973. Greedy Wolf challenged the demand to punish Jiang by noting that the divine general had previously helped spare Xuan Luan’s disciple despite his attack on the Southern Immortal Gate 973.

Internal Factions

Yuyu Heaven

Yuyu Heaven is dominated by demons who seized high Immortal Ranks during the chaos following the disappearance of the Three Buddhas and Three Venerables. It controls most of the upper Authority of Dao-Birth and much of the Heavenly Court’s real power 939.

Qingwei Heaven

Qingwei Heaven consists primarily of human immortals and gods who seek to restore the former human-led Heavenly Court. It is weaker than Yuyu Heaven and remains viable largely because the Heavenly Emperor prevents either faction from completely overwhelming the other 939.

• Long Zhi warns that Yuyu Heaven may suppress human cultivators who attempt to independently control valuable territories, including by fabricating charges or seizing their holdings through official power 939.
• Several Qingwei Heaven elders reportedly took interest in Jiang Yuechu after her sixteen Heavenly-Grade Dao Chess pieces became known, but did not openly act because of the powerful enemies she had made 971.
• During the confrontation over Jiang Yuechu, the opposing divine general suggested that her defenders represented Qingwei Heaven’s interference. Greedy Wolf Star Lord denied acting on the faction’s behalf 973.

Recruitment, Appointment, and Enforcement

• The Court actively recruits exceptional cultivators. After Jiang Yuechu killed the Heavenly Court-recognized Little Heavenly General, the Sky-Patrol Bureau sought to recruit her rather than immediately execute her 762.
• Talent can override ordinary procedures: Jiang Yuechu’s examinations were waived after Xu Ming disclosed her extraordinary foundation to Director Cao 786.
• Official standing changes how violence is judged. Director Cao states that a gifted cultivator killing an incompetent official may be considered decisive, while an unranked commoner killing an appointed official is treated as a challenge to Heavenly Court authority 786.
• The Court grants protection and amnesty to demon territories that submit to its authority, as seen when Black Mountain Bear Lord was recognized as Azure Firmament Grotto’s new Cave Master 947.
