Since the New York Wormhole Battle, the number of supercriminals around the world had been steadily increasing.

S.H.I.E.L.D.'s upper ranks had pushed forward a project—Project Insight.

The plan was to launch three Helicarriers into suborbital space and have them patrol the entire world.

Then, using identification technologies based on energy fluctuations, DNA, facial features, and more, they would nip crime in the bud.

Nick Fury had been following this project all along.

Until recently, when he discovered a massive problem.

The algorithm used to identify supercriminals was not under his control.

Just as he was about to visit the research department to learn about the algorithm, he discovered an even deeper problem.

The algorithm could be changed at any time.

He was only the director. Sooner or later, he would step down, and a new director would take over his work.

If the next director lacked a sense of justice, then this algorithm would become a devastating weapon.

It could be altered at any moment to target specific groups of people.

For example, to eliminate political rivals.

Not to mention more vile methods, such as enemy infiltration or hacker attacks.

So Director Nick Fury submitted a request to Secretary Pierce, demanding that Project Insight be delayed!

Pierce did not ask why. He approved it readily, seeming to trust Fury deeply.

He even made a small request of Fury, asking him to invite Iron Man to his little niece's birthday party and do him a favor.

The two chatted and laughed as they concluded the meeting.

But Fury had not expected that this very request would make Pierce want him dead.

After leaving S.H.I.E.L.D., Fury was on his way home.
