Background

Natasha was trained from childhood by the Red Room, which made her a ruthless and infamous operative. She does not know her birth parents; the Red Room’s general told her they were dead and that even their graves could not be found. The organization also removed her uterus so that she could not have children, denying her the family life she secretly longed for. After defecting, she found a measure of stability with S.H.I.E.L.D. 1

Before the main events, Natasha entered the City of God under the alias Roland and approached florist Tang Tianqi, later known as Apocalypse. She seduced him, arranged a rapid marriage, and used the wedding reception to assassinate drug lord Flying Eagle with poison hidden beneath her fingernails. She left Tang afterward with a note insisting that none of it had been real. 1 2

Despite treating the marriage as a mission cover, Natasha had been moved by Tang’s quiet life among his flowers and briefly wished she could remain with him. She stayed for an additional night, then left because she believed remaining with an ordinary person would endanger them both. 9

During the 1990s, Natasha was placed in an undercover Ohio family as a child agent alongside Red Guardian, Melina, and her younger “sister” Yelena. Although the family was fabricated for a mission, Natasha cared for Yelena and later carried guilt over leaving her behind after Red Guardian’s cover was exposed and the family returned to the Red Room. At age eleven, Natasha was selected by General Dreykov for full Red Room training. 194 195

Apocalypse later obtains a golden Recovery Potion that may restore Natasha’s fertility, but she chooses not to use it immediately because the world remains too unstable to raise a child safely. 62

Tang’s discovery of her identity, his attack on S.H.I.E.L.D., and his insistence on treating their marriage seriously leave her uncertain how to face him. She wants a home and family, but fears that her life as an agent makes those desires impossible. 9 19

When Apocalypse disappears for two years in Asgard, Natasha becomes increasingly anxious and changes her field style. Rather than feigning helplessness or relying on seduction, she becomes direct, violent, and intimidating in interrogations. 50

Natasha has a fierce sense of responsibility toward victims of the Red Room. Her guilt over abandoning Yelena and injuring Antonia Dreykov causes her to confront dangers she would otherwise avoid, but she refuses to let Apocalypse resolve these personal conflicts for her. 195 202

Banner Recruitment

Natasha leads the 9th Elite Squad to Calcutta to recruit Bruce Banner. Her attempt to speak with him away from civilians collapses when Banner mistakes S.H.I.E.L.D.’s intentions and transforms into the Hulk. The squad deploys portraits of Apocalypse as Fury’s psychological “secret weapon.” 51

Post-Battle Crime Surge

After the Battle of New York inspires a rise in superpowered crime, Natasha takes on increasingly frequent missions. She and Apocalypse pursue House, an illegal Asgardian blacksmith selling divine-powered protective equipment, and House’s terror of Natasha exposes her underworld reputation as a brutal interrogator. 65 66

Hydra Uprising

When Project Insight becomes a Hydra coup, Natasha immediately answers Fury’s call for help. Using her divine-power cultivation and enhanced body, she battles the Winter Soldier and Hydra forces, protects Fury during his escape through the sewers, and gives him a Recovery Potion to heal his gunshot wounds. 99 100 101

Hydra Intelligence Operations

Natasha helps Fury and Captain America respond to Hydra’s takeover, using her heightened senses to identify danger and her curiosity to examine Apocalypse’s contingency plan. She later infiltrates a Hydra base’s systems while Apocalypse distracts the defenders, securing intelligence on Hydra’s worldwide network. 103 127

Red Room Family Reunion

After Yelena sends a distress signal, Natasha asks Apocalypse to accompany her to Scandinavia and Budapest. She rescues Yelena, learns of the Red Room’s pheromone-based “Conquest” control system, and begins confronting the guilt and fear associated with her childhood, sister, and former organization. 194 195 196

Liberation of the Widows

Natasha and Yelena decide to free captured Red Room Widows rather than abandon them. Apocalypse replicates the antidote and releases it as a pink mist, ending Dreykov’s pheromone control; Natasha and Yelena then begin organizing the newly liberated agents. 196 197

Red Guardian Rescue

Natasha, Yelena, and the liberated Widows break Red Guardian out of a remote prison. Natasha demonstrates her enhanced strength by breaching the prison, breaking open his cell, and confronting an armored tank, while maintaining a guarded but concerned relationship with her adoptive father. 198 199

Taskmaster Confrontation

During the conflict surrounding Melina’s home, Natasha encounters Taskmaster and recognizes her as Antonia Dreykov, the child injured during Natasha and Hawkeye’s assassination attempt on Dreykov. Natasha overcomes her guilt, defeats Antonia, and seeks to have her spinal control chip safely decrypted rather than treating her as an enemy to be eliminated. 202 203 204

Fall of the Red Room

Natasha and Yelena lead the liberated Widows in an assault on the hidden Red Room Sky Fortress. The sisters personally kill General Dreykov, ending the central source of Natasha’s lifelong trauma and freeing hundreds of Widows from his control. 205

Widow Hydra Campaign

Following Dreykov’s death, Natasha and Yelena become the operational leaders of several hundred former Red Room Widows under Apocalypse’s command. Natasha is tasked with coordinating their missions and sharing intelligence with Fury as the group begins hunting Hydra agents worldwide. 206
