Background

Tony was Stark Industries' heir, a billionaire scientist, and a notorious playboy before being kidnapped while transporting weapons through the Middle East. Shrapnel lodged near his heart forced him to rely on a chest-mounted battery to survive while the Ten Rings attempted to coerce him into building weapons. 9 10

During his captivity, he worked alongside Yinsen, whose medical ingenuity kept him alive. Tang Tianqi repeatedly infiltrated the Ten Rings hideout to deliver food rather than immediately rescue him, then suggested that Tony use the available missile materials to build something capable of flying. The idea set Tony on the path to creating his first armor. 10 11

Tony escaped in his makeshift suit while Yinsen was left behind during the cave's collapse. Tang rescued both men, allowing Yinsen to survive and giving Tony a second chance to act on the responsibility Yinsen had awakened in him. Tony subsequently returned to the United States and publicly shut down Stark Industries' weapons-manufacturing division after witnessing his weapons used against civilians. 12 13
