Background / History

Early S.H.I.E.L.D. career

Before becoming S.H.I.E.L.D. director, Fury worked with Carol Danvers during the Kree–Skrull crisis on Earth. Their investigation revealed that the Skrulls were victims rather than invaders, and Carol’s departure afterward led Fury to retain an interstellar pager capable of summoning her across the galaxy in an existential emergency. 54 257

Fury lost an eye after Goose, a Flerken he had named, scratched him. Aware that Goose could swallow enormous objects—including the Tesseract—Fury later placed the creature in a space laboratory under Skrull care rather than risk keeping it on Earth. 246
