| Name | Rena (蕾娜) |
| Gender | Female |
| Affiliation | Mercenary party associated with Buck, Norman, Beard, and Milo; registered with the Gray Oak Village Mercenary Guild 65 71 |
| Occupation/Role | Mercenary; Nightwatch Assassin of the Martial/Elemental (Poison) path 65 76 |
| Status | Deceased; her soul was consumed by Isolde, who later used Rena’s identity and memories 65 85 |
| First Appearance | Chapter 65 (through Isolde’s recovered memories) |
Background
Rena was a short-haired mercenary who fought with poison-coated twin blades. Her badge identified her as a Martial/Elemental (Poison) practitioner with the Nightwatch Assassin class. Fragmentary memories accessed by Isolde depict her murdering an old man for his last pouch of coins, drinking on credit, and leaving a ten-silver debt at the Gray Oak Village Mercenary Guild 65 76.
After Rena’s death, Isolde consumed her fragmented soul and recovered enough recent memories to learn her name, badge number, associates, and guild debt. Isolde concluded that she did not need to perfectly reproduce Rena—she only needed others to believe that Rena had survived 65.
Appearance
Rena was described as a short-haired woman who carried poison-coated twin blades 65.
When Isolde assumed her identity, she recreated Rena’s appearance as an injured, mud-stained survivor.
- Mercenary badge and coin pouch used to support the disguise 65 69
- Poisoned dagger carried as part of the persona 66 69
- Torn clothing, dirt, rat blood, and facial scratches used to sell the story of a narrow escape 69
Personality
The real Rena is known only through incomplete soul memories. Those memories portray her as violent, opportunistic, and casual about debt: she killed a vulnerable man for money and attempted to put tavern drinks on her guild tab 65.
The “Rena” active in Gray Oak Village and Mistrest Forest is Isolde’s constructed persona. Isolde presents her as a cold, wounded, foul-tempered mercenary while carefully using public pressure, intimidation, and selective truths to direct others 71 76 78.
Abilities & Skills
Nightwatch Assassin Profile
Rena’s reported combat path was Martial/Elemental (Poison), with the Nightwatch Assassin class 76.
- Used poison-coated twin blades 65
- Her fighting style was associated with short blades, stealth, poisons, and long-practiced combat habits 85
- Isolde could copy the class information from Rena’s soul, but could not replicate the assassin’s trained techniques or instincts 85
Identity Replication
Isolde used Rena’s possessions, memories, and appearance as the foundation of her impersonation.
- Witch’s Mask and Inverted Radiance Shadowfold made less intelligent observers more inclined to accept the disguise 69
- Rena’s badge, poisoned dagger, and coin pouch gave the identity physical credibility 66 69
- Isolde deliberately limited overt use of her own magic because Rena’s known class could not plausibly explain it 85
Skills Used Under Rena’s Identity
These abilities belonged to Isolde rather than the original Rena, but their use increasingly endangered the disguise.
- Soul Thread / Soul-Binding Thread — Used to set intrusion alarms, restrain enemies, scout paths, redirect roots, and protect allies or cargo 73 104 107 108
- Death-Speech Disassembly — Used on Han Jin’s corpse to obtain fragments and reconstruct Shadowstep 85
- Shadowstep — Allows an eight-meter dash toward a stable foothold; cannot function without solid ground, and repeated use strains the legs 85
- Holy magic — Channeled through a damaged staff to create white light that repelled fog and Ghost Hands 104
Equipment / Items
- Mercenary Guild badge — Bore Rena’s identifying rune number and a personal dagger scratch 65
- Poisoned dagger — Used by Isolde to support the Nightwatch Assassin disguise 66 69
- Coin pouch — Supplemented with silver coins to make the assumed identity more believable 69
- Buck, Norman, and Beard’s mercenary badges — Used by Isolde to substantiate the claim that the three had died in Mistrest Forest 71
Relationships
- Isolde / Yu Lingye — Consumed Rena’s soul, accessed fragments of her memories, and adopted her identity to investigate Gray Oak Village and travel through Mistrest Forest 65 69 77.
- Milo — Former associate who recognized that the returned “Rena” did not match his memories. He repeatedly attempted to expose the impostor, but Isolde turned the village against him 71 72.
- Buck, Norman, and Beard — Rena’s former companions. Their recovered badges became evidence in Isolde’s fabricated survivor narrative 65 71.
- Chloe — Detected that “Rena” lacked the expected forest scent and later confronted Isolde directly over the false identity. They reached a conditional agreement not to expose one another immediately 72 83 84.
- Gray Oak Village Mercenary Guild — Held Rena’s registration details and recorded her unpaid ten-silver drinking debt 65.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Assumed Identity in Gray Oak Village
Isolde used Rena’s badge, appearance, and partial memories to enter Gray Oak Village as the sole survivor of a supposed Tree Spirit attack. She publicly accused Milo of abandoning Buck, Norman, and Beard, then produced their badges to make him appear cowardly and dishonest 69 71.
Mistrest Forest Expedition
Still posing as Rena, Isolde accepted Milo’s challenge to guide an expedition against the Millennial Tree Spirit. She claimed an injured poisoned arm as an excuse to avoid demonstrating assassin techniques, while using knowledge from her previous life to establish herself as the group’s indispensable guide 74 76.
She imposed rules on both local mercenaries and Otherworlders, redirected the party toward Old Ravine, and covertly arranged a confrontation with people connected to her previous life 77 78.
Exposure and the Trade Route
Milo and Chloe gradually identified inconsistencies in Rena’s identity, class, scent, and abilities. Chloe directly declared that she was not the real Rena after witnessing Isolde extract Han Jin’s soul 83 85.
During the Trade Route trial, Isolde’s repeated use of Soul Threads and holy magic provided further evidence that the woman called Rena was an impostor. After the disguise faded, the route continued recognizing her by her assigned duty rather than by Rena’s identity 104 108 110.
Trivia
- Rena owed the Gray Oak Village Mercenary Guild ten silver coins for drinks 65.
- While impersonating her, Isolde paid only for new wine and avoided settling Rena’s old tavern debt 71.
- Isolde considered Rena’s identity useful precisely because she only needed to sustain public belief, not perfectly imitate a trained assassin’s combat habits 65 85.
