Background
Jiliang was a student from Heliopolis and a longtime friend of Flay Allster. She initially refused to become involved in the Archangel’s fighting, but changed her mind after realizing Xia Ya would otherwise fight alone. Her decision was motivated by loyalty rather than any desire for war 15 17.
Though identified early as a Coordinator, Jiliang later learned that she had been engineered through Ulen Hibiki’s artificial-womb project. Rau Le Creuset claimed she was the sole successful subject among numerous failed experimental “brothers,” that Dr. Hibiki was her biological father, and that Cagalli Yula Athha was her biological twin 648. Xia Ya subsequently admitted that he had known her origins since meeting her at Heliopolis and had concealed them in the belief that ignorance would protect her 690.
Haruma and Caridad Yamato are identified as Jiliang’s parents. After becoming a soldier and killing in battle, she avoided meeting them in Orb because she feared they would no longer see her as their daughter 210 215.
Appearance
Jiliang has long brown hair and violet, “amethyst-like” eyes 326. She is most commonly seen in a standard pilot suit, including a distinctive pink women’s flight suit during the Archangel’s early operations 27.
- Her usual demeanor is quiet and restrained, making her emotional outbursts conspicuous to the crew 44.
- She later wears a short blue dress that Xia Ya describes as suiting her, causing her considerable embarrassment 144.
Personality
Jiliang is compassionate and strongly protective of others. On her first mobile-suit deployment, she delayed her return to the Archangel to retrieve a damaged escape pod because she believed a survivor might be inside 22. Her resolve to fight repeatedly comes from protecting friends, the Archangel, and Xia Ya—not hatred or ideology 58 77 92.
Her gentleness coexists with a fierce temper, pride, and possessiveness. She reacts strongly when Xia Ya mocks or misunderstands her, and her jealousy over his closeness with Lacus becomes impossible for him to ignore 44 51 52. Later, her protectiveness toward Xia Ya develops into an openly intimidating side when she orders Cagalli away from him 413.
Combat and loss leave her deeply traumatized. She experiences shock after early battles, survivor’s guilt after a shuttle’s destruction, and fear that killing has made her unworthy of her parents’ love 34 110 210. Rather than letting grief turn entirely into revenge, she ultimately commits herself to ending retaliation and pursuing reconciliation—even with Athrun 295 421.
Abilities & Skills
Mobile-Suit Piloting
Jiliang develops from an inexperienced civilian pilot into one of the Archangel’s most capable mobile-suit combatants.
- Retrieved a damaged escape pod with precise, delicate use of the Strike Gundam’s mechanical arm during her first real combat deployment 22.
- Survived coordinated attacks by Yzak, Miguel, and Athrun despite being only on her third Strike sortie; Phase Shift Armor protected her from physical weapons but could not prevent kinetic shock or energy loss 31.
- Fought Athrun’s Aegis Gundam in a Beam Saber duel and created an opening with a point-blank kick to its chest 58.
- Defeated Miguel’s High-Mobility GINN after an instinctive “awakening,” using a Beam Saber feint and an Armor Breaker strike to disable its neck joint 77.
- Became capable of fighting while managing multiple enemy units, battlefield objectives, and limited energy reserves 157 476 624.
- Pilots the Freedom Gundam with enough skill to intercept attacks on the Archangel, engage enhanced pilots, and employ its multi-target fire-control system against large forces 473 623 733.
Tactical Analysis
Jiliang rapidly studies unfamiliar systems and adapts her tactics under pressure.
- Identified that Forbidden Gundam’s beam-deflecting armor could theoretically be bypassed with physical ammunition or attacks launched faster than its pilot could activate the defense 474.
- Correctly recognized the finite operating time of the Goddess of Liberation Gundam’s damaged Voiture Lumiere wing and endured its assault until it lost power 678.
- Saved Canard from Raider Gundam’s predicted interception and synchronized an evasive maneuver with him without verbal coordination 623.
Operating-System Development
Jiliang possesses exceptional technical aptitude in mobile-suit software.
- Her work rewriting the Strike Gundam’s operating system was cited as evidence that she was likely a Coordinator 15.
- Helped develop and refine the Astray operating system alongside Xia Ya, including adjustments intended to improve compatibility with Natural neural interfaces 209 213.
- Performs complex maintenance-program work directly from the Strike Gundam’s cockpit 303.
Coordinator Physiology
As an engineered “Ultimate Coordinator,” Jiliang possesses physical and mental capabilities beyond ordinary humans.
- Her recovery from fever and dehydration was noted by the Archangel’s doctor as remarkable even for a Coordinator 110.
- Her reaction speed, dynamic vision, and neural reflexes allow her to execute extreme maneuvers under sustained high-speed combat pressure 474 678.
- These traits do not make her emotionally immune to battle trauma, fear, or grief 34 110 672.
Equipment
- Strike Gundam — Jiliang’s original mobile suit; equipped with Phase Shift Armor, a High-Energy Beam Rifle, shield, Beam Sabers, and Armor Breaker combat knives 31 77.
- Freedom Gundam — permanently entrusted to Jiliang because she seeks peace and hopes to reconcile with Athrun on equal terms 429.
Relationships
- Xia Ya / Char La Flaga — Lover and principal partner. Jiliang first chose to fight so he would not be alone, later confessed her love through a kiss, and insists on protecting him rather than merely being protected 17 92. She eventually agrees with Lacus to remain at his side in a shared relationship 409.
- Flay Allster — Childhood friend whom Jiliang and others describe as a sister-like bond 22 25 203. Their grief over Xia Ya’s apparent death divides them: Jiliang rejects revenge while Flay embraces it, though Jiliang continues trying to save her 295 326 679.
- Lacus Clyne — Initially a romantic rival whose closeness with Xia Ya provokes Jiliang’s jealousy 51 67. They later develop trust, jointly accept a shared relationship with Xia Ya, and support one another through his secrets 409 692.
- Athrun Zala — Childhood friend turned battlefield opponent 58 59. Jiliang cannot bring herself to kill him, then later chooses to seek friendship and reconciliation rather than revenge 421 429.
- Mu La Flaga — Trusted senior ally and protector. Mu accepts Jiliang’s plans in battle, teaches her to use a pistol during the Mendel incident, and repeatedly shields her from Rau’s attacks 352 645.
- Cagalli Yula Athha — Identified by Rau as Jiliang’s biological twin through Dr. Hibiki’s experimentation 648.
- Canard Pars — Combat ally who repeatedly protects Jiliang in the Experimental Nuclear Zaku; the two demonstrate growing battlefield synchronization against the Earth Forces’ G-Series units 623 679.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Heliopolis and the *Archangel*
Jiliang enters the conflict as a reluctant civilian who helps rewrite the Strike Gundam’s operating system. After refusing to fight, she chooses to pilot the Strike because Xia Ya would otherwise face the war alone 15 17. She proves her compassion by rescuing Flay from a damaged escape pod and reunites with her childhood friend aboard the Archangel 22.
Early Combat and Awakening
Jiliang’s first battles expose both her talent and her vulnerability. She is overwhelmed by ZAFT’s coordinated assault, suffers severe shock after the battle, and is comforted by Xia Ya 31 34. Her resolve hardens while defending the Archangel, culminating in the defeat of Miguel’s High-Mobility GINN through a dual-weapon close-combat maneuver 77.
Love, Trauma, and Commitment
Her jealousy toward Lacus forces her to confront her feelings for Xia Ya 51 52. She eventually confesses her love and rejects Xia Ya’s attempt to bear every burden alone, declaring that she will become strong enough to fight beside him 92. Later trauma, survivor’s guilt, and fear of her parents’ rejection challenge that resolve, but she continues to choose the battlefield so Xia Ya will not have to fight alone 110 210.
Xia Ya’s Apparent Death and Rejection of Revenge
When Xia Ya is believed dead, Jiliang collapses under grief and guilt 264. Though she initially hates Athrun and desires revenge, she stops Flay from killing a ZAFT soldier and concludes that retaliation cannot restore the dead 295. This conviction creates a painful separation between her and Flay, who remains committed to vengeance 326.
Freedom Gundam and Reconciliation
Jiliang resolves not to kill Athrun and instead seeks to restore their friendship despite the possibility of rejection 421. Xia Ya entrusts the Freedom Gundam to her, believing she needs the strength to confront Justice Gundam while pursuing peace 429.
Mendel Revelations
At Mendel, Rau exposes Jiliang’s engineered origins and claims that Xia Ya knew the truth all along 648 649. The revelation fractures her trust in Xia Ya until he admits that he concealed her origins from the beginning, claiming he wished to protect her from the pain of knowing 690.
Later Battles
As Freedom’s pilot, Jiliang repeatedly defends the Archangel and Orb against the Raider, Forbidden, and Calamity Gundams 473 476 623. She faces the brainwashed Flay in the Goddess of Liberation Gundam, refuses to kill her when given the opportunity, and attempts to awaken Flay through their shared memories 678 679. Even with Freedom badly damaged, she later rescues Xia Ya from Providence Gundam and helps enable his destruction of its remaining DRAGOON units 684.
