Background / History
Nami is introduced while fleeing Buggy’s pirates after stealing a sea chart. Though initially wary of Zero and drawn to Luffy’s strength as protection, she identifies herself as a thief who specifically steals from pirates. 4
At Buggy’s base, Nami refuses Buggy’s order to kill the captive Luffy with a Buggy Ball. She knocks out the pirate assigned to light the cannon and attempts to extinguish its lit fuse herself. 5 After fighting Buggy’s men and being rescued by Zero, she agrees to sail with the Straw Hats while framing the arrangement as temporary cooperation. 6
Nami later leaves with the Going Merry because of her unresolved connection to Arlong and Cocoyasi Village. Zero does not stop her, instead promising that the crew will find and bring her back. 11 Her apparent betrayal is ultimately revealed as an effort to protect the Straw Hats from Arlong; after Zero and Luffy affirm their trust, she asks the crew for help. 15 16
Following Arlong’s defeat and the destruction of Arlong Park, Nami is freed from his control and fully resumes her place among the Straw Hats. 18
Personality
Nami is practical, resourceful, and sharply motivated by money. She readily joins a drinking contest for a 100,000-Beli reward, negotiates a proposed one-billion-Beli payment for Vivi’s protection, and steals the villagers’ wallets as a farewell prank. 18 34 36
Despite her guarded demeanor and distrust of pirates, she is compassionate and courageous. She cannot bring herself to kill Luffy for Buggy, risks herself trying to stop the Buggy Ball, and ultimately reveals that she had been trying to keep the Straw Hats safe from Arlong. 5 16
Nami is intensely responsible when the crew is at sea. Even while dangerously ill, she recognizes an abnormal weather pattern and orders a course change that saves the Going Merry from a tornado. 45
