Background / History

Teach remained aboard the Whitebeard Pirates for years while secretly waiting for the Dark-Dark Fruit. After obtaining it by killing fellow crewmate Thatch, he abandoned Whitebeard’s crew and built the Blackbeard Pirates around his own ambitions 9 110.

He captured Portgas D. Ace and used Ace’s identity as Whitebeard’s commander and Roger’s surviving son to bargain for a Seven Warlords position, one billion Beli, and restrictions on Marine participation in the exchange 8. Teach intended to use his new government status to enter Impel Down and recruit powerful prisoners.

The exchange at Dabalaro Island collapsed when Rear Admiral Roya took Ace aboard a Marine ship but withheld the promised money. Teach tried to recruit Roya before resorting to violence, then lost decisively despite using the Dark-Dark Fruit; Roya captured Teach and his original crew 10 11 12 13.

Teach later exploited the chaos surrounding Impel Down. He forced the prisoners of Level 6 to kill one another and recruited the survivors, including Shiryu, Avalo Pizarro, Catarina Devon, Sanjuan Wolf, and Vasco Shot 60. Big Mom’s prison breach and Roya’s defeat of Magellan enabled Teach’s escape with this expanded crew 108.

At Marineford, Teach used the war and Whitebeard’s death to complete his larger plan. He stole the Tremor-Tremor Fruit, publicly revealed his ability to wield two Devil Fruits, and used the resulting power to establish himself as a new Four Emperor 115 119 152.

After the war, Teach seized roughly two-thirds of Whitebeard’s former territories through massacres, plunder, and Devil Fruit theft. He also manipulated Edward Weevil into attacking Marco and the Whitebeard remnants, hoping to eliminate Marco and claim the Phoenix-Phoenix Fruit 261 267.

Roya’s Justice League eventually cornered Teach while pursuing his territorial expansion. Teach was overwhelmed by Roya’s multiple Devil Fruit powers and Night Guy, then killed; the remaining Blackbeard Pirates were destroyed by Roya’s Golden Wheel Reincarnation Explosion 279 280 283 284.

Teach is patient, calculating, and willing to spend years preparing for a single opportunity. His time under Whitebeard was defined by deliberate concealment while he waited for the Dark-Dark Fruit, and his Warlord appointment was only a tool for accessing Impel Down 9 110.
