Whitebeard led the Whitebeard Pirates as a family-centered crew, with his division commanders and subordinates regarding him as “Pops.” Before the Summit War, he had served aboard the Rocks crew alongside Kaido and Big Mom, though he later rejected any claim of meaningful bonds with them. He was also Roger’s longtime rival and friend. 65 92 114

When Ace was sentenced to execution, Whitebeard committed his entire force to rescuing him despite the danger posed by the Marines’ newly appointed Fourth Admiral, Roya. He considered gathering additional allies after learning that Roya had severely wounded Kaido, but never abandoned Ace’s rescue. 36

Whitebeard bypassed the Marines’ blockade by coating the Moby Dick and accompanying ships, traveling beneath the sea, and surfacing inside Marineford’s inner bay. He announced his arrival by splitting the ground and raising tsunamis, then declared that he had come to take Ace home alive. 65 66

Temporary Alliance of Three Emperors

After Kaido and Big Mom arrived, Whitebeard temporarily accepted their alliance because Marineford’s forces threatened Ace’s rescue. He made clear that he had no interest in their plan to conquer the world. 67

Confrontation with Roya

Whitebeard attacked Roya to ensure that the former Admiral would not interfere with Ace’s rescue. Their conflict escalated into a clash of swordsmanship, Haki, and the Tremor-Tremor Fruit, with Whitebeard unleashing the full destructive power of his Devil Fruit. 79 80 87

Final Battle Against Blackbeard

Teach’s arrival provoked Whitebeard’s fury because of his betrayal, Thatch’s murder, and Ace’s capture. Although the Dark-Dark Fruit neutralized Whitebeard’s quake attacks, Whitebeard wounded Teach with Murakumogiri and nearly finished him before his failing body gave out. 109 111 112

Teach, Shiryu, and the Blackbeard Pirates ultimately overwhelmed Whitebeard with bullets, cannon fire, and blades. Whitebeard remained standing through the assault. 113

Death and Legacy

Knowing he would die, Whitebeard used the worldwide broadcast to reveal that the One Piece exists, intending to end the old era and ignite a new one. He died standing after declaring:

“The One Piece is real!” 114

Shanks later recovered Whitebeard’s body and accompanied Marco and the surviving Whitebeard Pirates to bury him alongside Ace. 201 202
