What did a Liver-Severing Qi-Killing Pill taste like?
To Gu Qingfeng, it tasted little different from an ordinary pill of Chinese medicine. Perhaps mint had been added to it; it felt fairly cool in his mouth.
He had simply forced it down like any other pill.
As for this "Red Taisui Cinnamon Pill," since there was only one, he had meant to swallow it whole with the imposing air of "One red pill in my belly, and my fate is mine, not Heaven's!"
But when he actually tried to swallow it, he found he could not.
It was too big!
It was like trying to swallow a large pear in one gulp. Worse still, those "whiskers" were sticking out of it.
Gu Qingfeng could only use Geng-Metal Power to cut it into three pieces.
While cutting it, he could not help rubbing his eyes.
Whether because of the dim surroundings or something else, he thought those "white whiskers" had swayed for a moment.
But when he looked more closely, he found they had not.
Still, either possibility made sense. After all, this was a pill refined from a kind of "divine flesh."
Then, beneath the wavering lamplight, Gu Qingfeng began eating the pill.
At first, it did not taste as good as the Liver-Severing Qi-Killing Pill. It had a slippery, greasy texture that was part Chinese medicine, part meat.
Fortunately, a fragrance of osmanthus made it just barely palatable.
Halfway through, however, it developed a sweet-and-sour flavor, much like hawthorn.
Before he knew it, he had finished the pill, which was half the size of a fist.
Perhaps because this pill digested more slowly than the Liver-Severing Qi-Killing Pill, he had yet to feel any strengthening of his soul. Instead, the hawthorn flavor had made him a little hungry.
Since he was hungry, he might as well eat first.
He still had plenty to do tonight. Only with a full belly could he get to work properly.
In fact, he had noticed the food when he first arrived.
The physician on night duty needed a late-night meal.
And the apothecary assistant had already prepared the ingredients.
There was a large bowl of rice topped with two braised duck legs, with braising sauce poured over the rice.
Whenever the resident physician Zhao Di wanted to eat, all he needed to do was take it over and heat it up.
This braised duck leg rice was indeed Physician Zhao Di's favorite.
Whenever his night watch stretched into the small hours, he would always have a bite of it with a sip of liquor.
Unfortunately, that duck leg rice had now fallen into Gu Qingfeng's hands.
Was this not another kind of NTR?
Just outside the medicine room was a stove. He only needed to light a fire, add some water, and steam it.
While pouring the water, Gu Qingfeng caught sight of his reflection in the bucket and jumped in fright.
In the reflection on the water, black vapor was rising from his body, twisting like tentacles. He looked like a god of slaughter who had crawled out of hell.
"Killing qi?"
After taking twelve "Organ-Transforming Qi-Killing Pills," Gu Qingfeng had only felt his liver cleansed and his vision sharpened. Killing qi had continued forming within him, merging into his body and blood, without any major abnormalities.
Who could have expected that, probably because too much killing qi had formed too thickly all at once, the unabsorbed remnants were now seeping through his skin, forming black tongues of vapor?
It was not dense, but it rose and swayed like long hair covering his body.
None of this interfered with Gu Qingfeng's meal, though.
Before long, a steaming bowl of braised duck leg rice came off the stove.
Gu Qingfeng squatted there and ate.
He ate with relish.
The two sizable duck legs soon became nothing but two bones. The sauce-drenched grains of rice were distinct and separate, and he quickly polished them all off.
After eating, Gu Qingfeng felt strength coursing through his entire body!
Whether the "Red Taisui Cinnamon Pill" had begun taking effect or not, his head felt wonderfully clear, without the slightest hint of post-meal carb drowsiness.
Gu Qingfeng returned to the four corpses. He did little to disturb them, merely taking one of Sun Sheng's small, plump hands and dragging it across the floor a few times.
Then he made his way through the darkness to the Leaf House next door.
Sun Sheng, the strongest man in this Ghost Hand Apothecary, was dead. Zhao Di, the second-strongest man on night duty here, was dead too. For Gu Qingfeng now, it truly was like walking through an unguarded realm—he could go wherever he pleased!
Besides, with black killing qi rising from his entire body, he looked as though he had melted completely into the darkness.
Suddenly, a fierce burst of fire flared up, erupting inside the Leaf House.
Gu Qingfeng had found the storeroom of Immortal Leaf and set it ablaze.
When he had come here with Yellow Smoke Ghost yesterday and seen countless people trapped by these tobacco leaves, unable to free themselves, the thought of destroying the tobacco had already occurred to him.
Now, justice was served!
Immortal Leaf certainly was flammable. The fire spread swiftly, taking hardly any time at all to burn from one end to the other.
At last, people nearby began waking up.
"Fire! Fire!"
"Damn it, it's going to spread over here!"
As the clamor rose, the whole street soon woke up.
And it woke up very quickly!
Because what was burning was Immortal Leaf.
The smell of Immortal Leaf smoke spread at once. Those who had come out bleary-eyed to watch the spectacle soon grew excited, waving their arms and stamping their feet.
Some even took their trousers off right there in the street, claiming the most beautiful woman under heaven had told them to!
Of course, people also appeared to fight the fire!
Business at Ghosthand's Eighteenth Apothecary had always been good. Its physicians and some of its staff and apothecary assistants were treated well, with room and board provided.
Most of them lived nearby.
Upon discovering that the Ghost Hand Apothecary was on fire, they hurried over to put it out.
By the time they arrived, the fire in Immortal Leaf Hall had already spread to the Ghost Hand Apothecary.
The apothecary's rear courtyard caught fire too!
Gu Qingfeng ran out together with the three remaining medicine testers in the rear courtyard.
Those three medicine testers had stayed not because they were ignorant of how things worked, as Gu Qingfeng had been, but because their diarrhea during the day had been so fierce that they were too weak to walk. They had been forced to remain.
Now, even those who could barely walk were running as though their feet had wings.
One of them was even spraying behind him as he sprinted along.
Roaring flames engulfed this den of wickedness, illuminating Gu Qingfeng's refined face.
The blaze was smaller than he had expected. He could only blame his lack of experience—it was his first time committing arson.
A few more tries, and he would surely get the hang of it!
In truth, the fire was far from small. The two physicians who rushed over after hearing the news were both capable fighters, but even with others helping, they could not extinguish the flames anytime soon.
Because the fire was burning Immortal Leaf, the physicians and apothecary assistants who came to fight it inhaled too much smoke. They all seemed very excited, and even... very happy.
As they fought the fire, every one of them waved their arms, stamped their feet, and made noises. It could rightly be called singing and dancing.
By then, the people nearby had also begun helping put out the fire. It was not that these neighbors were warmhearted; if they did not help, the flames would spread to their homes.
These people likewise carried buckets of water to fight the fire while singing and dancing.
Never mind them—even the onlookers began dancing after catching the scent of the tobacco smoke.
For a time, the entire street, and even a small part of the city, became as festive as New Year's.
Gu Qingfeng stood among the crowd, smiling, his smile just as festive.
He liked festivities!
Just then, the sound of robes cutting through the air rang out in rapid succession. A string of red figures came swooping and leaping over like great birds.
Someone cried out, "It's the Red Tear Guards!"
