Umbridge Courting Death

The three Dementors were captured by Eli without so much as a squeak, like parcels being collected.

Eli expressionlessly tied the cloth pouch shut and hung it back at his waist. Hermione and Harry were still shaken.

"Eli, just now..." Hermione began. Dementors had always been tightly controlled by the Ministry of Magic. How had they suddenly appeared in a Muggle neighborhood? And they had happened to run into them. Hermione quickly realized something was wrong.

"I don't know who sent them. Nine times out of ten, we were the targets—or rather... I was." Eli looked unconcerned, but he knew perfectly well who was behind it.

In the films from his previous life, while Harry was still living in Little Whinging, Umbridge from the Ministry of Magic had sent two Dementors to attack Harry.

The purpose of sending the Dementors was not necessarily to kill Harry Potter. It was to force him to use magic in the Muggle World, then drag him before a tribunal. It was the best way to smear Harry Potter and Dumbledore.

Dumbledore had always insisted that Voldemort had returned, which was an enormous headache for the Ministry of Magic led by Fudge.

Umbridge was an ambitious and ruthless witch. To curry favor with Fudge and climb the ranks, she would stop at nothing.

So it was hardly surprising that she would send Dementors into a Muggle neighborhood to attack underage wizards.

Their good mood vanished completely with the arrival of the Dementors. Hermione and Harry were at a loss.
