Background / History
Dumbledore was once closely aligned with Gellert Grindelwald, sharing ideals and ambitions with him in their youth. Their conflict ultimately led to the death of Dumbledore’s sister and the loss of his closest relationships; Dumbledore later defeated Grindelwald and became celebrated as the greatest White Wizard. 38
His past made him distrustful of unchecked ambition. When assessing Eli Hall, Dumbledore feared that Eli’s extraordinary talent and hunger for strength could lead him toward the path of another Dark Lord. 38
Dumbledore is an old friend of Nicolas Flamel and has access to Flamel’s Philosopher’s Stone. He helped arrange Eli’s alchemical apprenticeship under Flamel after judging Eli to be an unusually gifted student. 23 38
Personality
Dumbledore presents himself as warm, eccentric, and humorous, frequently using sweets, strange food, and casual conversation to put others at ease. His friendliness often conceals careful observation and probing questions. 22 37
He is principled in the use of power. When the Centaurs refused to surrender Eli, Dumbledore respected their decision rather than forcing the issue, despite the overwhelming pressure his presence placed on them. 16
Dumbledore is deeply concerned with the moral consequences of talent. His own regrets lead him to emphasize love, family, and loyalty over power or immortality. 38 49
Abilities & Skills
Magical Power and Protective Magic
Dumbledore is regarded as one of the strongest wizards alive, with magical power feared even by Voldemort. 3 16
- Absorbed a vast magical fire in the Forbidden Forest into his wand, extinguishing it without resistance. 15
- Cleared an abandoned factory of ruined equipment with a single large-scale spell. 49
- Cast lengthy rune-based protections around Eli’s potion factory; Eli believed the resulting barrier would be extremely difficult even for Voldemort to breach. 49
- Created an access parchment that permits entry to the factory only for people whose names Eli personally writes upon it. 49
Legilimency
Dumbledore is described as a master Legilimens and is feared by Eli for his ability to perceive thoughts. 3 19
- Attempted to probe Eli’s mind following the troll attack. 22
- Withdrew when Eli’s unusual soul resisted him, then openly apologized for the intrusion. 22
- Identified Eli’s true identity through investigation rather than openly confronting him until the end of Eli’s first year. 37 38
Transfiguration and Magical Scholarship
Dumbledore is recognized as a Transfiguration master and an accomplished student scholar. 5 29
- Sent Eli his personal Transfiguration notes after Eli’s academic success. 31
- His student-era publications included work involving cross-species Transfiguration. 29
- Assisted Professor McGonagall and the Flamels during Eli’s Animagus transformation. 42 43
Fawkes-Assisted Travel
Dumbledore can travel with Fawkes through flame-based transport. 49
- Used Fawkes to bring himself and Eli from Hogwarts to Godric’s Hollow and the hidden potion factory. 49
- Fawkes is associated with the Dumbledore family, whose members have historically been followed by phoenixes. 43
Equipment / Items
- Wand — Used for large-scale spellcasting, including extinguishing the Forbidden Forest fire and placing factory wards. 15 49
- Personal Transfiguration notes — Given to Eli as a scholarly resource. 31
- Factory access parchment — A magically created document that restricts entry to names personally authorized by Eli. 49
- Fawkes — Dumbledore’s phoenix companion and means of flame-based travel. 48 49
Relationships
- Eli Hall / Billy Potter — Headmaster, mentor, and cautious ally. Dumbledore discovers Eli’s identity, urges him to value love over power, supports his decision not to tell Harry yet, and later helps establish his potion factory. 37 38 49
- Harry Potter — Dumbledore asks Eli to stand beside Harry and respects Eli’s belief that the brothers are not yet ready to learn the truth of their relationship. 38
- Minerva McGonagall — Deputy Headmistress and trusted colleague. They jointly support Eli’s Animagus work, though Dumbledore advocates keeping Eli’s phoenix form secret. 5 43
- Nicolas Flamel — Old friend and fellow scholar. Dumbledore introduces Flamel to Eli and supports Flamel’s decision to take Eli as an alchemy student. 23 38
- Gellert Grindelwald — Former close companion whose ambitions and eventual separation shaped Dumbledore’s lifelong fear of power without love. Dumbledore later defeated him. 38
- Fawkes — Phoenix companion that responds to Dumbledore’s commands and transports him through flame. 48 49
- The Centaur tribe — Dumbledore respects their right to protect Eli’s identity, earning no open conflict despite their refusal to yield him. 16
Story Role / Major Arcs
Philosopher’s Stone Protections
Dumbledore places the Philosopher’s Stone beneath Hogwarts behind a series of magical trials. Eli interprets these protections as both a trap for Voldemort and a test designed around Harry and his companions. 12
Eli Hall’s First Year
After Eli collapses from casting “Ultimate Death” against the troll, Dumbledore questions him in the hospital wing, recognizes the spell may be newly created, and unsuccessfully probes his mind. 22
Dumbledore later removes the Mirror of Erised after finding Harry and Eli with it, endorsing Eli’s warning that Harry should not become lost in visions of the dead. 25
At the end of the school year, Dumbledore awards decisive House Cup points to Gryffindor, then privately reveals that Eli is Harry Potter’s missing younger brother, Billy Potter. 37
Guidance and Alchemical Apprenticeship
Dumbledore’s conversation with Eli resolves his fear that Eli will become consumed by power. After Eli promises to use his strength to protect those close to him, Dumbledore agrees to keep his identity from Harry for the time being. 38
He introduces Eli to Nicolas Flamel, enabling Eli’s summer apprenticeship in alchemy. 38
Support for Eli’s Phoenix Transformation
Dumbledore helps oversee Eli’s Animagus transformation and identifies Eli’s form as an Eastern phoenix or possible mythical creature beyond ordinary classifications. 42 43
When McGonagall considers registering the transformation with the Ministry, Dumbledore supports Eli’s decision to keep it secret. 43
Potion Factory Alliance
Recognizing Eli’s automated potion factory as a potential weapon against Voldemort and the Death Eaters, Dumbledore urges its rapid completion. 49
He clears the abandoned factory, fortifies it with advanced protections, and arranges Mundungus Fletcher as a Diagon Alley contact for Eli. 49 50
