Background / History

Dumbledore was once closely aligned with Gellert Grindelwald, sharing ideals and ambitions with him in their youth. Their conflict ultimately led to the death of Dumbledore’s sister and the loss of his closest relationships; Dumbledore later defeated Grindelwald and became celebrated as the greatest White Wizard. 38

His past made him distrustful of unchecked ambition. When assessing Eli Hall, Dumbledore feared that Eli’s extraordinary talent and hunger for strength could lead him toward the path of another Dark Lord. 38

Dumbledore is an old friend of Nicolas Flamel and has access to Flamel’s Philosopher’s Stone. He helped arrange Eli’s alchemical apprenticeship under Flamel after judging Eli to be an unusually gifted student. 23 38

Before becoming Headmaster, Dumbledore served as Hogwarts’ Transfiguration professor and Gryffindor Head of House. In that capacity, he assessed Muggle-born students before their enrollment and took particular notice of the young Tom Riddle. 300
