The Room of Requirement echoed with wave after wave of gasps and cheers. The young wizards gathered in a circle were having the time of their lives; where was there any sign of Umbridge's influence?
Outside the Room of Requirement, Filch held a piece of bitten toast in one hand and had another clamped in his mouth. His eyes were sealed shut, and his head bobbed every so often like a fishing float.
A skinny, patchy-furred cat lay sprawled on the floor. It was Mrs Norris, who was also lazily dozing, letting out soft purring sounds. Who knew how long she had been asleep?
Filch would startle awake after nodding off for a while, chew the bread in his mouth a few times, then gradually slow down again as sleepiness overtook him once more.
Filch had gone to great lengths to catch these sneaky students. He had stood guard here for the entire afternoon. The other students in the castle had even wondered why Filch and his cat had not been roaming around causing trouble.
The students inside the Room of Requirement had long known about Filch's surveillance. With seasoned veterans like the twins around, how could they possibly let Filch catch them?
Sure enough, while Filch stared so hard at that peeling wall that he was practically seeing patterns, a large group of students quietly slipped out through the entrance to the Room of Requirement. Fred Weasley and George Weasley even peeked around the corner at Filch and snickered, clearly plotting something unpleasant.
By the time Filch could no longer resist the urge to search around, the students had already returned to their dormitories. How could he possibly catch them then?
Ever since joining Dumbledore's Army, the students had stopped caring about Umbridge's school rules. Even if Umbridge did
