Background / History

Early life in the Xiao Clan

Xun'er was raised within the Xiao Clan under the explanation that she was the descendant of an old friend whose ancestors had rendered great service to the clan. Even as a child, however, Xiao Yan recognized that her knowledge, resources, and manner set her apart from ordinary clan members. 3

She grew up alongside Xiao Yan and Xiao Mei. During the Xiao Clan assessment, she tested at the Fifth Stage of Dou Qi, then encouraged Xiao Yan before his attempt to condense a Qi Vortex, promising him a gift upon his success. 1

After Xiao Yan became a Dou Practitioner, Xun'er gave him the high-tier Mystic-class fire-attribute cultivation method Flame Manipulation Formula. She also carefully considered his ambitions and recommended Canaan Academy as a place where he could gain experience without being bound to a sect. 3

Xun'er was originally sent to the Xiao Clan by the Ancient Clan to obtain the Tou She Ancient God Jade, an artifact in the Xiao Clan's possession. She later learned that the Ancient and Xiao Clans had historically maintained close ties through exchanges, marriages, and shared history; her attachment to Xiao Yan consequently conflicted with her original mission. 69

Canaan Academy

Although she initially did not meet Canaan Academy's entry requirements, Xun'er revealed herself as a ten-year-old at the Sixth Stage of Dou Qi during registration. Her aptitude was assessed as at least A-grade. 7

She later arrived at Canaan Academy because she missed Xiao Yan. The academy allowed her to reside there despite her non-student status, an exception that further highlighted the influence behind her identity. 14 15 23

Xun'er supported Xiao Yan throughout his academy life, including after his fight with Ge Shi and during the misunderstanding involving Hu Jia. She remained close with both Xiao Yan and Hu Jia, often meeting them at her private academy residence. 6 14 23

Although she accepted that Xiao Yan's demanding cultivation, combat training, and alchemy studies limited the time he could spend with her, Xun'er insisted that she had also come to Canaan Academy to cultivate seriously rather than merely follow him. 15

Journey to the Central Plains

When Xiao Yan chose to leave Canaan Academy for the Central Plains, Xun'er decided to accompany him and return to her own clan. After he departed, she summoned Ling Lao—a Dou Emperor-level protector—and ordered him to notify her clan of her return. She also resolved to loosen some of her restrictions so she would not fall behind Xiao Yan. 32

During the journey, Xun'er explained the Central Plains' major powers to Xiao Yan, including the Pill Tower, the Soul Hall, the sects, valleys, and pavilions. Her guarded response to questions about conflicts at a “higher level” suggested that she knew far more than she disclosed. 33

At Ye City, she promised Xiao Yan that she would eventually tell him the truth about her background, provided he continued to trust that she would never harm him. 34

Departure from the Ye Clan

When Ye Zhong proposed that Xiao Yan marry Xin Lan, Xun'er invented an existing Xiao Clan marriage contract to give him a respectful way to refuse. She later proposed the compromise that Xiao Yan publicly act as Xin Lan's contractual husband for the Ye Clan's Pill Tower assessment without entering a genuine marriage. 36 37

Before returning to her clan, Xun'er admitted that she had secretly arranged for Ling Lao to protect Xiao Yan. She warned Xiao Yan not to draw undue attention to the Xiao surname or the Xiao Clan while in the Central Plains, but left the reason unexplained. 39

Return to the Ancient Clan

During her absence, Xun'er and her father sensed Xiao Yan's distress during the Death Illusion and intervened from afar, enabling his survival. Xun'er subsequently had the Ancient Clan monitor both the Pill Tower and Burning Flame Valley until she knew he had returned safely. 68

After reuniting with Xiao Yan, Xun'er revealed that the Xiao Clan had originated from a Dou Emperor and had once been one of the Central Plains' Dou God Clans. She explained that the clan's decline began after Xiao Xuan's failed attempt to break through to the Dou Emperor realm consumed the clan's remaining Dou Emperor Bloodline. 69

She also explained the political danger surrounding the Tou She Ancient God Jade. The jade was divided among the eight surviving Dou God Clans, and the Xiao Clan's fragment remains in the Xiao Clan's possession, making the weakened clan a potential target for other major powers. 69 70

Appearance

Xun'er is repeatedly described as exceptionally beautiful, graceful, and refined. As a child, she resembles a finely sculpted porcelain doll; as she grows older, her presence is noted for its purity, elegance, and an aura that naturally keeps strangers at a distance. 1 3 5

Beneath that youthful behavior, she is observant and composed. She thinks carefully before advising Xiao Yan, understands the dangers of his chosen path, and consistently supports his desire to grow stronger rather than demanding that he stay beside her. 3 15

Her devotion is paired with restraint and secrecy. Xun'er protects Xiao Yan through resources, information, and Ling Lao's covert intervention, yet withholds the full truth of her family, authority, and connection to the Xiao Clan until she believes it can safely be revealed. 32 33 39

Xun'er experiences visible guilt over having entered the Xiao Clan to seek the Tou She Ancient God Jade and over the dangers Xiao Yan faced after the Pill Tower learned of him through her. Nevertheless, she remains willing to disclose sensitive information, seek her father's aid, and use her clan's influence to protect him. 68 69

Her affection for Xiao Yan has developed beyond childhood companionship. Though she remains easily embarrassed by overt intimacy, she reciprocates his embrace and openly worries about his safety during their separations. 67 68 70 71

Xun'er possesses exceptional cultivation aptitude, reaching the Sixth Stage of Dou Qi at age ten.
