Background / History

Early life in the Xiao Clan

Xun'er was raised within the Xiao Clan under the explanation that she was the descendant of an old friend whose ancestors had rendered great service to the clan. Even as a child, however, Xiao Yan recognized that her knowledge, resources, and manner set her apart from ordinary clan members. 3

She grew up alongside Xiao Yan and Xiao Mei. During the Xiao Clan assessment, she tested at the Fifth Stage of Dou Qi, then encouraged Xiao Yan before his attempt to condense a Qi Vortex, promising him a gift upon his success. 1

After Xiao Yan became a Dou Practitioner, Xun'er gave him the high-tier Xuan-class fire-attribute cultivation method Flame Manipulation Formula. She also carefully considered his ambitions and recommended Canaan Academy as a place where he could gain experience without being bound to a sect. 3

Canaan Academy

Although she initially did not meet Canaan Academy's entry requirements, Xun'er revealed herself as a ten-year-old at the Sixth Stage of Dou Qi during registration. Her aptitude was assessed as at least A-grade. 7

Journey to the Central Plains

When Xiao Yan chose to leave Canaan Academy for the Central Plains, Xun'er decided to accompany him and return to her own clan. After he departed, she summoned Ling Lao—a Dou Emperor-level protector—and ordered him to notify her clan of her return. She also resolved to loosen some of her restrictions so she would not fall behind Xiao Yan. 32

During the journey, Xun'er explained the Central Plains' major powers to Xiao Yan, including the Pill Tower, the Soul Hall, the sects, valleys, and pavilions. Her guarded response to questions about conflicts at a “higher level” suggested that she knew far more than she disclosed. 33

When Ye Zhong proposed that Xiao Yan marry Xin Lan, Xun'er invented an existing Xiao Clan marriage contract to give him a respectful way to refuse. She later proposed the compromise that Xiao Yan publicly act as Xin Lan's contractual husband for the Ye Clan's Pill Tower assessment without entering a genuine marriage. 36 37

Before returning to her clan, Xun'er admitted that she had secretly arranged for Ling Lao to protect Xiao Yan. She warned Xiao Yan not to draw undue attention to the Xiao surname or the Xiao Clan while in the Central Plains, but left the reason unexplained. 39
