Background / History

Dugu Yan inherited the Jade Phosphor Serpent Emperor martial soul and its poison-related burden from her grandfather, Dugu Bo. As her soul power increases, the poison becomes stronger faster than her body can resist it, causing recurring and increasingly severe backlash episodes. A sparring match with Yu Tianheng prematurely triggered one such attack at Heaven Dou Imperial Academy 14 15.

During the episode, Ye Lengleng’s Nine-Heart Begonia repaired Dugu Yan’s superficial injuries but aggravated the poison’s pain. Tang Shuo offered to suppress the poison and eventually cure both Dugu Yan and Dugu Bo, but Dugu Yan initially dismissed him as an arrogant stranger seeking an excuse to approach her 15.

When the poison flared up again, Dugu Yan was forced to seek Tang Shuo’s help. She abandoned her pride and personally begged him to save her; his Great Sun Divine Light burned away the poisonous vapor and relieved her suffering, though only temporarily 17. Tang Shuo explained that a permanent solution required Dugu Bo’s cooperation, while Dugu Yan agreed to supply her poison and pay for his continued assistance 18.

After Tang Shuo treated another relapse, he demanded her Natal Serpent Poison—venom concentrated in her fangs and tied to her vitality—as payment. Dugu Yan rejected the demand and accepted his wager instead, confident that her rank and combat-oriented martial soul guaranteed victory 27. Tang Shuo decisively defeated her, saved her from her own reflected poison needles, and obtained the venom after she honored their agreement 28 29.

Tang Shuo subsequently returned repeatedly to collect Jade Phosphor Serpent Emperor Poison for his Myriad-Poison Fiend Legs cultivation. Although the collections exhausted and weakened Dugu Yan, releasing the venom also relieved the stagnation in her soul power; she eventually accepted that she could not defeat him to stop the arrangement 32.

Dugu Yan later defended Tang Shuo when Dugu Bo mistakenly believed he had bullied her. Her intervention halted Dugu Bo’s attack and helped turn the confrontation into a negotiation over curing the Dugu family’s poison 33. She remained distraught throughout Dugu Bo’s subsequent poison trial, fearing that even her grandfather’s strongest source poison would kill Tang Shuo 34 35.

After Dugu Bo granted Tang Shuo access to the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well, Tang Shuo eventually resolved Dugu Bo’s accumulated poison problem and stated his intention to remove the hidden danger inherited by Dugu Yan as well 36 44. Dugu Bo’s growing admiration for Tang Shuo also led him to consider matchmaking his granddaughter with him 37.

Following her seclusion, Dugu Yan returned to the Heaven Dou side. During a later confrontation, Ma Hongjun targeted her with Phoenix Fireline before Ye Lengleng supported her with the Nine-Heart Begonia 95. When injured Tang Shuo was encircled by Spirit Hall, Dugu Yan broke down at the prospect of leaving him behind and tearfully bid him farewell after Dugu Bo led the younger generation away 101 103.

At a later encounter, Dugu Yan and Ye Lengleng were unable to withstand Tang Shuo’s vastly increased aura and were forced to their knees. Tang Shuo dismissed them without further conversation, leaving Dugu Yan fearful and despairing at the gulf between their power 132.

Appearance

Dugu Yan is a striking young woman with short purple hair and emerald-green, snake-like eyes. During her poison backlash, her usually alluring appearance is replaced by pallor, cold sweat, disheveled hair, and visible physical weakness 14.

  • Purple short hair.
  • Emerald-green snake eyes.
  • Wears the Heaven Dou Imperial Academy team uniform.
  • A later duel account describes her hair as long and dark green 27.
  • Her Jade Phosphor Serpent Emperor possession manifests as a large serpent phantom with cold vertical pupils 28.

Personality

Dugu Yan is proud, sharp-tongued, and reluctant to show weakness. She initially treats Tang Shuo’s claims with contempt, especially after he witnesses her in a vulnerable state, and resists asking him for help until her pain becomes unbearable 15 17.

Despite her pride, she is not dishonorable. After losing the wager against Tang Shuo, she openly admits defeat, thanks him for saving her, and keeps her promise to provide venom when he needs it 29. She is also resilient: Tang Shuo recognizes both her talent and her tenacity, even while judging that she has substantial room to improve 49.

Her repeated concern for Tang Shuo—including defending him from Dugu Bo and panicking during Dugu Bo’s poison trial—reveals a growing attachment that she struggles to acknowledge openly 33 34 35. This attachment persists when Tang Shuo is endangered by Spirit Hall, as she is unable to calmly accept leaving him behind 101 103.

However, Tang Shuo’s later overwhelming transformation leaves her psychologically shaken. When his aura alone forces her to kneel, Dugu Yan is stripped of any will to resist and regards him with fear and despair 132.

Abilities & Skills

Jade Phosphor Serpent Emperor

Dugu Yan possesses a venomous beast martial soul that enhances her combat capabilities and grants access to potent serpent poisons.

  • Manifests a massive Jade Phosphor Serpent Emperor phantom during martial-soul possession 28.
  • Possesses three documented soul rings at rank 37: two yellow and one purple 28.
  • Her poison grows stronger alongside her cultivation, but this also causes increasingly dangerous internal backlash 15 17.

Jade Phosphor Red Poison

Her first soul skill, also called Exhilaration Poison, stimulates her nerves to increase her combat performance.

  • Raises attack power by 20%.
  • Raises speed by 20%.
  • Used alongside her second skill when Tang Shuo overwhelmed her in close combat 28.

Jade Phosphor Blue Poison

Her second soul skill, also called Paralysis Poison, improves her durability while suppressing pain.

  • Eliminates pain.
  • Raises defense by 30%.
  • Its defensive enhancement proved insufficient against Tang Shuo’s Solar Corona Divine Wheel 28.

Jade Phosphor Needles

Dugu Yan uses venom-coated concealed needles as a lethal ranged attack.

  • Can launch dozens of needles in a single desperate volley 28.
  • A single needle is stated to be capable of killing a Soul Ancestor-level opponent 29.
  • Tang Shuo reflected the needles with the Eastern Emperor Bell; he then moved Dugu Yan out of their path before they struck her 28.

Natal Serpent Poison

The purest Jade Phosphor Serpent Emperor poison is concentrated in Dugu Yan’s fangs and is closely tied to her vitality.

  • Requires her to condense it over time with her own soul power 27.
  • Extracting a significant quantity severely weakens her and damages her vitality 27 29.
  • Releasing venom can also ease the stagnation in her soul power, giving her temporary relief despite the exhaustion it causes 32.
  • Tang Shuo repeatedly collected it as a vital material for the Myriad-Poison Fiend Legs, despite Dugu Yan’s protests over the strain it placed on her cultivation 32.

Relationships

  • Tang Shuo — Initially distrustful of his claim that he could treat her poison, Dugu Yan later relies on him to suppress it. She loses a wagered duel to him, supplies poison for his cultivation, and protects him from Dugu Bo’s anger 15 17 27 29 33. Her concern becomes increasingly evident during Dugu Bo’s poison trials and the Spirit Hall encirclement, when she fears for Tang Shuo and cannot bear to abandon him 34 35 101 103. Their later encounter reveals a drastically widened power gap, as Tang Shuo’s aura alone overwhelms her 132.
  • Dugu Bo — Her grandfather and the source of her inherited poison-related danger. Dugu Bo is fiercely protective of her, while Dugu Yan fears both his poison and his hostility toward Tang Shuo 33 34 35. After Tang Shuo proves capable of resolving the Dugu family’s poison problem, Dugu Bo becomes an ally of Tang Shuo and considers arranging a match between him and Dugu Yan 36 37.
  • Ye Lengleng — Her close friend and caretaker during poison flare-ups. Ye Lengleng repeatedly attempts to heal her, advocates for Tang Shuo’s help, and teases Dugu Yan about her feelings toward him 14 16 17 32. The two later face Tang Shuo together and are simultaneously overwhelmed by his aura 132.
  • Yu Tianheng — Sparring partner whose match with Dugu Yan triggered a premature poison backlash 14 15. He later shares concern for Tang Shuo during the Spirit Hall encirclement and departs with Dugu Yan under the protection of their elders 101 103.
  • Ye Haitang — Ye Lengleng’s mother, who witnesses Tang Shuo’s treatment of Dugu Yan and explains the severe cost of extracting Dugu Yan’s Natal Serpent Poison 26 27.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Jade Phosphor Serpent Poison Backlash

Dugu Yan is introduced during a severe poison relapse at Heaven Dou Imperial Academy. Her condition establishes the inherited danger of the Dugu family’s poison and provides Tang Shuo with his initial route toward Dugu Bo and the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well 14 15.

Reluctant Dependence on Tang Shuo

After rejecting Tang Shuo’s first offer, Dugu Yan is driven by pain to ask him for help. His Great Sun Divine Light suppresses the poison, forcing her to recognize that conventional healing cannot solve her condition 17 18.

Duel for Natal Serpent Poison

Dugu Yan wagers her Natal Serpent Poison against Tang Shuo’s promised medical favor. Despite holding a twelve-level advantage and using her martial soul, she is overwhelmed, nearly injured by her own needles, and ultimately concedes defeat honorably 27 28 29.

Dugu Bo’s Return

When Dugu Bo mistakes Tang Shuo’s poison collection for mistreatment, Dugu Yan rushes to Tang Shuo’s defense. Her testimony prevents the conflict from escalating and leads to Dugu Bo considering Tang Shuo’s proposed cure 33.

Continued Poison Collection

Tang Shuo repeatedly collects Dugu Yan’s Natal Serpent Poison to temper his Myriad-Poison Fiend Legs. Though she resents the physical strain and interruption to her cultivation, the process also alleviates her stagnant soul power and further complicates her feelings toward him 32.

Seclusion

After Tang Shuo resolves Dugu Bo’s poison problem, he intends to eliminate Dugu Yan’s hidden backlash as well. However, Ye Lengleng later reports that Dugu Yan has entered seclusion to pursue rank 40 44.

Dugu Yan later emerges from seclusion and resumes acting alongside the Heaven Dou side, though her successful breakthrough and later rank have not been confirmed 95 101 103.

Spirit Hall Encirclement

When Spirit Hall moves to execute the injured Tang Shuo, Dugu Yan is among those ordered to escape. Unable to accept abandoning him, she breaks down in tears and later leaves only after Tang Shuo reassures her to return to Heaven Dou City and await his message 101 103.

Later Encounter with Tang Shuo

Dugu Yan and Ye Lengleng later encounter Tang Shuo after his strength has grown far beyond their comprehension. His aura forces both women to their knees, and he dismisses them as insignificant before departing, leaving Dugu Yan frightened by his transformation 132.
