Background / History
Tang Hao’s past actions caused the Clear Sky Sect to withdraw from the world, diminishing the standing of the remaining Upper Three Sects and contributing to their closer cooperation with the Heaven Dou imperial family against Martial Soul Hall 36.
He was regarded as a genius seen only once in a century, but reached the Soul Douluo realm only after turning thirty. His record is contrasted with Ning Chen’s attainment of Rank 83 at fourteen 36.
After years of hiding and fleeing, Tang Hao remains intensely suspicious of anyone near Shrek Academy during Tang San’s studies there. He has already identified Xiao Wu as a Hundred Thousand Year transformed soul beast and is prepared to eliminate anyone he believes could endanger or expose her 55 56.
When he first saw Xiao Wu in Nuoding City, Tang Hao considered capturing and imprisoning her to provide Tang San’s future ninth Soul Ring. Memories of Ah Yin’s origins and Tang San’s unusual fondness for Xiao Wu gradually weakened this intention. He instead protected the two children from the shadows for years 59.
Tang Hao also visits Ah Yin, who has been reborn through a seed. Ning Chen’s escape forces him to devote more attention to Tang San’s safety, drastically reducing the frequency of those visits 55 59 63.
Appearance
Tang Hao first appears as a broad, powerfully built man in dingy gray coarse clothes, outwardly resembling an ordinary farmer. His physique and stillness instead convey the pressure of an iron tower or mountain 54.
- Broad, heavily muscled build.
- Wears plain, worn gray clothing.
- Keeps his face obscured in shadow during his initial encounter with Ning Chen.
- Has cold, sharp eyes and an oppressive killing intent 54.
- His presence becomes volcanic and suffocating when he fights seriously 57.
Personality
Tang Hao is guarded, terse, and ruthlessly protective. Ning Chen’s recognition of him immediately makes Tang Hao regard the youth as a potential threat to Tang San and Xiao Wu; he chooses to kill rather than investigate whether that suspicion is justified 55 56.
He does not yield to Ning Chen’s appeals to their shared Upper Three Sects affiliation. Once he decides Ning Chen must die, he answers negotiation with escalating force 56. Despite this mercilessness, he recognizes genuine strength, openly admitting that he had underestimated Ning Chen after the latter withstands and counters his attacks 57.
His protective instincts extend to coercion against uninvolved family members. After defeating Dugu Bo, he threatens Dugu Yan’s life to force the Poison Douluo to serve as Tang San’s hidden guardian. He treats this threat as retaliation for Dugu Bo’s abduction of his own son 64.
Tang Hao can nevertheless set aside immediate vengeance for practical advantage. Once his anger subsides, he decides that killing a Titled Douluo would be wasteful and instead uses Dugu Bo’s strength to reinforce Tang San’s protection 63 64.
Although stern and cold while instructing Tang San, he shows concern when his son experiences an unexplained pain and sense of loss. Rather than forcing him to continue cultivation, Tang Hao tells him to rest 96.
Abilities & Skills
Clear Sky Hammer
Tang Hao wields the Clear Sky Hammer, the Clear Sky Sect’s inherited tool-type Martial Soul and the world’s greatest of its kind 55.
- Possesses nine Soul Rings: two yellow, two purple, four black, and one red Hundred Thousand Year ninth ring 55.
- His hammer strikes can destroy trees and terrain while he pursues Ning Chen at high speed 55.
- A Soul-Power-infused hammer strike reaches the effective force of an ordinary Title Douluo’s ninth soul skill, stripping away a layer of Ning Chen’s eighth-ring defensive light 56.
- His hammer technique is not merely brute force: he shatters five of Ning Chen’s phantom mountains with controlled, precisely timed strikes 57.
- A near-full-strength physical strike in his normal state clashes evenly with Ning Chen’s punch empowered by seven fused phantom mountains. The collision creates a crater more than ten yards across, and Tang Hao’s arm is left faintly tingling 58.
- His opening strike against Dugu Bo severely damages the Jade Phosphorous Serpent Emperor Avatar, rupturing its scales and transmitting force into Dugu Bo’s physical body 63.
Clear Sky Avatar
Tang Hao’s seventh Soul Skill, Clear Sky Avatar, greatly magnifies the Clear Sky Hammer and its destructive force 58 63.
- Enlarges the hammer to the size of a small mountain, producing a resonance between Tang Hao and his weapon 58.
- Generates pressure that locks onto Ning Chen, fractures the ground, compresses the surrounding air, and leaves no ordinary opportunity to retreat 58.
- Overpowers Ning Chen’s all-out punch empowered by ten fused phantom mountains, blasting him dozens of yards away and breaking his right arm 58.
- Breaks Dugu Bo’s eighth Soul Skill, Time Freeze, through overwhelming force. The Avatar’s pressure begins restoring movement to the affected air before the hammer shatters the control technique 63.
- Enables Tang Hao to smash apart the serpent Avatar’s tail and forcibly dispel Dugu Bo’s Martial Soul Avatar 63.
Slaughter God Domain
Tang Hao bears the Slaughter God Domain, marked by the murderous patterns on his Clear Sky Hammer 55.
- His killing intent alone immobilizes Ning Chen outside Shrek Academy before either Martial Soul or Soul Ring is revealed 54.
- The domain and his killing intent reinforce the terror and pressure surrounding his pursuit 55.
Super Douluo Physique and Mobility
As a Rank 95 Super Douluo, Tang Hao can match or overwhelm Ning Chen’s enhanced movement even without immediately relying on Soul Skills 55.
- Pursues Ning Chen through dense forest while snapping trees apart with casual strikes 55.
- Closes the distance despite Ning Chen’s Voidstep, Nine Yang Divine Skill, and Nine Treasure Glazed Tile Pagoda speed enhancement 55 56.
- Generates crushing pressure with a direct hammer blow before the weapon even lands, cracking the ground beneath Ning Chen and bending nearby trees 57.
- Remains standing after Ning Chen’s maximum-strength counterattack, although his breathing becomes more hurried 58.
- Moves so quickly during his attack on Dugu Bo that his approach appears comparable to teleportation; this is described as speed rather than an identified spatial ability 63.
Clear Sky Sect Inheritance
Tang Hao possesses the Clear Sky Sect’s inherited Ring Detonation Divine Skill, though he has not used it in the documented confrontation with Ning Chen 55.
Limitations and Injuries
Tang Hao’s existing injuries impose limits on the opponents he can safely confront. After Ning Chen escapes, he worries that Sword Douluo Chen Xin and Bone Douluo Gu Rong might act together against Xiao Wu, a combination that could overwhelm him in his injured condition 59.
A later assessment holds that he could defeat the Titan Giant Ape only narrowly in his current state and would stand no chance if the Sky Azure Bull Python joined the battle. This is a comparison of fighting strength, not a newly depicted confrontation 89.

Relationships
- Tang San — His son. Tang Hao’s fear that Ning Chen may threaten Tang San is a central reason for his attempted execution of the latter 55 56. He later rescues Tang San from Dugu Bo and arranges five years of secret protection without allowing his son to learn about the confrontation 62 63 64. After the Soul Master Tournament, he takes Tang San away and oversees his cultivation, showing concern when Tang San becomes unwell 89 96.
- Xiao Wu — Tang Hao knows that she is a Hundred Thousand Year transformed soul beast. He considers Ning Chen’s exceptional talent and senses a possible danger to her secret 55. Although he once contemplated making her Tang San’s future ninth Soul Ring, he abandons that intention and protects her instead 59. Following Ning Chen’s escape, he sends her back to the Star Dou Great Forest and allows her to leave Tang San a letter containing a three-year promise 62.
- Ning Chen — Initially encounters him outside Shrek Academy, pursues him after being recognized, and attempts to kill him as a perceived threat 54 55 56. Tang Hao defeats him with Clear Sky Avatar but fails to prevent his escape through a Minor Teleportation Talisman 58 59. The encounter becomes a lasting grudge and motivates Ning Chen to pursue Titled Douluo cultivation; Ning Chen also conceals the Thousand Mountains Formula during the tournament to avoid recognition by Tang Hao 60 71 97.
- Clear Sky Sect — Tang Hao is a member of the sect and bears its Clear Sky Hammer and inherited Ring Detonation Divine Skill 55.
- Ah Yin — Her soul-beast origins influence Tang Hao’s decision not to capture Xiao Wu. He visits her following her rebirth through a seed, but his increased vigilance over Tang San reduces those visits 55 59 63.
- Dugu Bo — Tang Hao intercepts him after he abducts Tang San, defeats him, and compels him to protect Tang San for five years by threatening both his life and Dugu Yan’s safety 62 63 64. This forced obligation subsequently develops into genuine friendship between Dugu Bo and Tang San 65 67 68.
- Dugu Yan — Used as leverage against Dugu Bo. Tang Hao threatens to kill her if her grandfather refuses his demands, despite her lack of involvement in Tang San’s abduction 64.
- Ning Fengzhi — Regards Tang Hao’s strength and potential support as reasons to cultivate goodwill toward Tang San. His intervention against Martial Soul Hall’s assassins is strategically motivated rather than based solely on solidarity among the Upper Three Sects 69.
- Gu Rong and Chen Xin — Tang Hao considers their combined strength a serious danger while he is injured, particularly if they pursue Xiao Wu for her Hundred Thousand Year Soul Ring 59.
- Gui Mei — Aware of the possibility of Tang Hao’s retaliation, but believes his partnership with Yue Guan and Martial Soul Hall’s backing, especially Qian Daoliu’s presence in Spirit City, provide sufficient protection 68.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Encounter Outside Shrek Academy
Tang Hao appears outside Shrek Academy when Ning Chen, unmasked and dressed in a black cloak, approaches the grounds with Ning Rongrong as his intended target. Tang Hao’s killing intent halts Ning Chen before he can enter 54.
Pursuit of Ning Chen
After Ning Chen recognizes him, Tang Hao concludes that the youth may know too much and gives chase. Ning Chen uses Voidstep, Nine Yang Soul Power, and the Nine Treasure Glazed Tile Pagoda’s speed enhancement, but Tang Hao steadily closes the distance and ultimately summons his Clear Sky Hammer and full Soul Ring configuration 55.
Tang Hao interprets the intrusion as a possible attempt by a Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect Soul Master to obtain Xiao Wu’s Hundred Thousand Year Soul Ring. This mistaken understanding explains why he disregards the sect’s reputation and refuses to release Ning Chen 59.
Battle Against Ning Chen
Ning Chen survives Tang Hao’s opening hammer strikes through Nine Treasure Divine Light Body Protection, but Tang Hao remains determined to kill him despite Ning Chen’s pleas and appeal to the Upper Three Sects’ ties 56.
When Ning Chen reveals his true Rank 83 Soul Douluo cultivation and confronts him directly, Tang Hao destroys five phantom mountains from the Thousand Mountains Formula. He then acknowledges Ning Chen’s strength and prepares an overwhelming direct strike against the youth’s fused mountain-form body 57.
Ning Chen fuses seven phantom mountains into his body and meets Tang Hao’s near-full-strength physical strike with a punch. Their collision ends evenly, surprising Tang Hao and leaving his arm faintly tingling. Unwilling to prolong the encounter, Tang Hao activates Clear Sky Avatar 58.
Even Ning Chen’s complete ten-mountain fusion cannot withstand the resulting blow. Tang Hao blasts him away, breaks his right arm, and leaves him critically wounded. Tang Hao remains standing with only heavier breathing, while Ning Chen declares that he will remember the encounter 58.
Ning Chen’s Escape and Xiao Wu’s Departure
After Ning Chen’s protective divine light shatters, Tang Hao advances to finish him. Ning Chen activates his only Minor Teleportation Talisman, escaping in silver light before Tang Hao’s hammer can interrupt the spatial technique. The final strike destroys the ground rather than killing its target 59 60.
Ning Chen’s survival shifts Tang Hao’s immediate concern to retaliation against Tang San and Xiao Wu. He does not fear Ning Chen personally, but recognizes that the two younger Soul Masters cannot defend themselves against him. Xiao Wu’s potentially exposed identity and the possibility of intervention by the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect make her continued presence especially dangerous 59.
Tang Hao sends Xiao Wu back to the Star Dou Great Forest without revealing the full circumstances to Tang San. She leaves a letter promising a reunion in three years, giving Tang San something to hold on to while keeping the reasons for her departure concealed 62.
Tang Hao’s heightened vigilance prevents Ning Chen from immediately attempting another infiltration of Shrek Academy. The defeat also drives Ning Chen to cultivate more intensely and seek Rank 90 for greater security 60.
Rescue of Tang San and Defeat of Dugu Bo
When Dugu Bo abducts Tang San near the newly established Shrek Academy, Tang Hao notices the kidnapping and intercepts him on the way to his residence in Sunset Forest. Carrying the Clear Sky Hammer, he orders Dugu Bo to release Tang San 62.
Already frustrated by Ning Chen’s escape and his reduced opportunities to visit Ah Yin, Tang Hao refuses Dugu Bo’s explanation. He severely injures the Poison Douluo’s Martial Soul Avatar with an opening hammer strike, then uses Clear Sky Avatar to break Time Freeze. A further clash destroys the serpent Avatar’s tail, forcibly dispels the transformation, and sends Dugu Bo crashing through a massive tree 63.
After venting his anger, Tang Hao decides against killing Dugu Bo. Instead, he demands that the defeated Titled Douluo secretly intervene whenever Tang San faces a life-threatening crisis 63.
Coercing Tang San’s Hidden Guardian
Dugu Bo initially refuses to become a child’s bodyguard, even at the cost of his life. Tang Hao responds by threatening Dugu Yan and revealing that Tang San is his son. Faced with both Tang Hao’s threat and the danger his existing enemies would pose to his granddaughter if he died, Dugu Bo agrees to protect Tang San for five years 64.
Tang Hao checks Tang San’s condition and confirms that the boy is merely unconscious from knockout poison. Before leaving, he orders Dugu Bo to keep both his presence and the confrontation secret from Tang San 64.
The arrangement draws Dugu Bo increasingly close to Tang San and Shrek Academy, confusing Xue Xing and upsetting Dugu Yan. Dugu Bo cannot explain Tang Hao’s role in his changed behavior 65. Over time, Tang San’s assistance with the Jade-Scaled Serpent Emperor’s toxins transforms the coerced protection into genuine friendship. Dugu Bo subsequently defends Tang San against Martial Soul Hall’s assassins out of both obligation and personal loyalty 67 68.
Indirect Influence on the Soul Master Tournament
Tang Hao’s potential retaliation remains a consideration during Martial Soul Hall’s attempt to assassinate Tang San. Gui Mei relies on Martial Soul Hall’s strength and Qian Daoliu’s presence in Spirit City as deterrents, while Ning Fengzhi sees Tang San as a means of building goodwill with Tang Hao 68 69.
Ning Chen also remains cautious about being recognized. Because Tang Hao has already seen the Thousand Mountains Formula, Ning Chen uses Illusory Stars to disguise its Earth Vein Aura as starlight during his fight against Xie Yue. Tang Hao’s possible presence among the spectators is a precaution Ning Chen considers, not a confirmed appearance 71.
Training Tang San After the Tournament
After the Soul Master Tournament ends, Tang Hao takes Tang San away 89. He later oversees his son’s cultivation with a stern demeanor while also displaying paternal concern 96.
When Ning Chen kills Xiao Wu in a distant valley, Tang San experiences a sudden pain and an enduring sense of emptiness. Tang Hao checks on him and tells him to rest before continuing cultivation. Neither is shown identifying Xiao Wu’s death as the cause of the episode 96.
Ning Chen subsequently absorbs Xiao Wu’s Soul Ring and Soul Bone, reaching Rank 92. He believes his increased strength would leave him less hard-pressed against Tang Hao than during their earlier confrontation, but no rematch occurs at that point 97.
