History

Black Zetsu spent generations seeking an Indra reincarnate capable of awakening the Rinnegan. It altered the Uchiha stone tablet’s instructions beyond the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan stage, helping steer Madara toward Hashirama’s power and the Moon’s Eye Plan 225. Madara eventually awakened the eyes and secretly transplanted them into Nagato, intending for Nagato to collect the Tailed Beasts and resurrect him with the Outer Path’s Samsara of Heavenly Life Technique 224 226.

Yu initially rejected transplanting Madara’s eyes: he believed he could bear only one and did not want to surrender either Kamui eye. He pursued an evolution of his own Sharingan instead 2. His complete Hashirama power and Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan were still insufficient; he identified the missing factor as the power of Indra’s reincarnate, Sasuke 227. After obtaining that power, Yu awakened his own Rinnegan 535.

Appearance

The Rinnegan is marked by concentric ripples. Its color and placement vary among the eyes shown in the novel 535 686 691.

• Yu’s awakened pair — three purple ripple rings with six tomoe in each eye 535.
• Transplanted Ōtsutsuki eyes — examples include Minato’s and Tobirama’s golden Rinnegan 686 691.
• Six-Tomoe Rinnegan — also called a Superior Rinnegan by Ubiji 671.

Six Paths and Outer Path

The Six Paths are the Celestial God, Human, Naraka, Asura, Animal, and Preta Paths. The Outer Path includes powers connected to the Demonic Statue and resurrection 9 783.

• Celestial God Path — manipulates attractive and repulsive forces; documented techniques include Almighty Push and Planetary Devastation 493 536.
• Human Path — can extract souls or read information from a mind 496 563.
• Naraka Path — can use Yama in revival; its powers have a dangerous connection to the Netherworld 642 1130.
• Asura Path — transforms the body or a clone into mechanical weaponry 539.
• Animal Path — summons enhanced beasts; Yu later contracts the souls of nine Moon Beasts through it 461 589.
• Preta Path — absorbs chakra-based attacks 536.
• Outer Path — can summon the Demonic Statue and perform the Samsara of Heavenly Life Technique, which restores the dead to living bodies but rapidly drains the caster’s chakra and life force 9 547.

Individual ocular techniques

• Yu’s Six-Tomoe Rinnegan retains his original Mangekyō techniques at a higher level. It also develops Yomotsu Hirasaka, Causal Severance, and the causality-strengthening technique He Transforms into an Antagonist 536 540.
• Madara’s Limbo: Border Jail creates another Madara in an otherwise invisible and untouchable world; Six Paths Power allows an opponent to perceive and fight it 549.
• Extended Path techniques vary by eye. Ubiji states that an ordinary pair can awaken one derivative series, while a Six-Tomoe Rinnegan can awaken one series per eye 677.

Limits and compatibility

• Transplanted eyes can impose severe strain: Orochimaru needed about half an hour to adapt to a single one of Madara’s Rinnegan 547.
• Yu’s Wood Clones can use the Six Paths, but their Rinnegan lack the original’s six tomoe and cannot use his three major personal ocular techniques 632.
• The Rinnegan and Pure Eye can coexist in one body but cannot be used simultaneously 1007.

Notable Wielders

• Madara Uchiha — awakened the pair later implanted into Nagato 224 226.
• Nagato — wielded Madara’s transplanted pair through the Six Paths of Pain and later became the Ten-Tails’ jinchūriki 9 513 536.
• Yu / Uchiha Riu — awakened his own dual Six-Tomoe Rinnegan, which later merged with his Tenseigan 535 875.
• Naruto and Sasuke — awakened a right-eye Rinnegan and dual Six-Tomoe Rinnegan, respectively; Naruto’s eye later evolved to six tomoe 694 843.
• Orochimaru, Tobirama, Minato, Yugao, and Xiyang — received transplanted Rinnegan at different points 547 686 691.
