Background / History

Black Zetsu manipulated Madara through the altered Uchiha stone tablet, encouraging him to believe that combining Uchiha and Senju power would lead to the Rinnegan and the Infinite Tsukuyomi. Madara's attack on Konoha and his battle with Hashirama were chiefly intended to obtain Hashirama's flesh and Asura's Chakra rather than simply destroy the village. 223 225

After surviving the Valley of the End with Izanagi, Madara awakened the Rinnegan in old age and implanted the pair into the young Nagato. He planned for Nagato to collect the tailed beasts, use Samsara of Heavenly Life Technique to resurrect him, and eventually return the eyes to their original owner. Riu was selected as Madara's other pawn and was manipulated through White Zetsu implants and Rin's death. 225 226
