Background / History

Yu initially operated under the name Riu. After defeating members of the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist, he distributed several of their weapons according to his own judgment, gave Yūhi Uzuki the Lightning Blade: Kiba, and declared his intention to establish Shadow Village under the name “Shadow.” 20

Rather than relying exclusively on Kamui, Yu repeatedly sought dangerous opponents to sharpen himself. During his battle with Killer B, he endured multiple wounds so that his Sharingan could develop the dynamic vision needed to read the Eight-Sword Style. 25 He later completed Perfect Stillness Sage Mode under Mito’s evaluation, gaining instinctive combat reactions and greatly enhanced ocular power. 128

Yu’s ascent accelerated after he claimed the Sage of Six Paths’ remaining power and became a Six Paths-level figure. He developed Causal Severance, expanded Kamui’s limits, wielded Truth-Seeking Orbs, and became the Feather Emperor of his growing realm. 542 549 550

His conflicts with the Ōtsutsuki drew him into Yomi and the Netherworld. Ubiji trained him in Netherworld power, while Yama formally appointed him an Avici Hell Soul-Chasing Envoy. Yu accepted the office without submitting to Yama’s authority, primarily because it gave him a path home and the means to protect those close to him. 673 679

After surviving humiliation at the hands of Yama and Hemo, Yu preserved his broken horn as a reminder of his vow to defeat them. He later summoned both brothers into the Soul Realm and challenged them directly. 891 His eventual growth brought him into conflict with Ryushiki, whom he later accepted as a teacher and ally after their battle. 959 1013

Yu became a central force in the wars over Yomi, Takamagahara, and the Progenitor Gods. He repeatedly combined inherited abilities, personal cultivation, divine authority, and the strengths of his allies rather than depending on a single power system. 1033 1059 1062 1215

Appearance

Yu’s appearance changes substantially with his transformations and equipment. In ordinary Six Paths attire, he modifies his robes into a purple-and-gold yukata, conceals his Six Paths Staff as a sleeve blade, and wears his Truth-Seeking Orbs as waist ornaments. 550

• In battle, he can change into a white dharma robe while restoring the Yin-Yang Six Paths Staff and Truth-Seeking Orbs. 552

Personality

Yu is highly analytical in combat. He studies the rules, limitations, and hidden costs of enemy techniques before committing his strongest powers, as shown against Killer B, the Army-Breaking Songstress, Torashiki, and Huiyao. 25 716 864 1059

He actively seeks difficult battles because he considers hardship necessary for growth. Even after becoming overwhelmingly powerful, he trains under Might Guy to address his weakness in taijutsu rather than relying on ocular abilities and Sage power. 707 722

Despite his ruthlessness toward enemies, Yu places unusual weight on promises and personal loyalty. He refused to bow to Yama, yet knelt to secure Tongtong’s pardon because he had promised to help her. 679 He also chose to give Kakashi a Chakra Fruit rather than consume it himself, believing that abandoning Ubiji’s loved one for greater personal power would make him no different from the “Heavenly People” he opposes. 1066

Yu’s prolonged exposure to death, Hell, and mass suffering has left him emotionally numb at times. His Hell Mask’s “Mu” expression represents his inability to feel ordinary joy, sorrow, grief, or resentment, though anger and determination continue to drive him forward. 847
