Background

Lu Mingfei was a Cassel College student and S-Rank Mixed-Blood whose memories were marked by humiliation, low self-worth, and being dismissed as useless by classmates and bullies. He habitually saw himself as an ordinary “loser,” even after Chu Zihang and Caesar recognized his unusual potential 3.

During the Three Gorges Reservoir operation, he watched Nono suffer a life-threatening wound from a dragon’s tail and accepted a contract with Lu Mingze at the cost of a quarter of his lifespan. He was immediately transported to the Lands Between, where he became a Tarnished capable of reviving through Sites of Grace and manipulating Runes without a Finger Maiden 1 27.

Appearance

Lu Mingfei is a black-haired young man with a lean frame that becomes visibly stronger through Rune enhancement and combat training. His ordinary brown eyes turn molten gold when his dragon blood and combat instincts awaken 4 38.

  • Golden Eyes — Dragon-like golden pupils that appear during battle and draw attention from dragon-affiliated figures. 4 6
  • Dragonification scales — Fine black scales can fade from his body or reappear when he concentrates. 19
  • Knightly attire — Receives Banished Knight Armor and twin Exile Knight Greatswords upon becoming a formal Storm Knight. 15
  • Battle scars and damaged gear — Frequently emerges from major fights exhausted, injured, or forced to replace ruined armor from fallen enemies. 5 17

Personality

Lu Mingfei is fearful, self-deprecating, and deeply pragmatic. He prefers stealth, preparation, ambushes, and one-on-one fights over fair confrontations, openly acknowledging that he fights “like a loser” when direct strength is insufficient 2 9. Fear does not disappear as he grows stronger; instead, he learns to act while terrified.

His experiences make him suspicious of promises and bargains, particularly after dealing with Lu Mingze. He interrogates Melina before accepting her offer, seeking useful information while refusing to trust her blindly 6. Despite this caution, he retains clear moral limits: he considers using Boc as bait against the Demi-Human chiefs, but rejects the idea rather than sacrifice someone helpless 9.

Lu Mingfei’s defining trait becomes persistence. Repeated death, humiliation, and failure gradually teach him to study his enemies rather than surrender. Later, he begins rejecting the need to fight for other people’s expectations, choosing to become stronger because he personally wants to try 24 41.

Abilities & Skills

Rune Manipulation and Grace

Lu can directly command Runes and use them to strengthen himself, a feat Melina considers impossible for an ordinary Tarnished without a Finger Maiden 1 6.

  • Converts acquired Runes into physical enhancement at will. 1
  • Revives at Sites of Grace after death in the Lands Between. 1
  • Resurrection does not apply in his original world; death there is permanent. 27
  • Uses Sites of Grace to restore himself and refill his Flask of Crimson Tears. 5 23

Golden Eyes and Dragon Blood

Lu’s Golden Eyes are the visible manifestation of his dragon bloodline. They heighten his combat instincts and accompany the release of increasingly inhuman strength 4 17.

  • Identifies openings and reacts before conscious thought can fully catch up. 3 4
  • Awakens greater power under severe pain, danger, and violence. 17
  • Dragonification grants him long-range sight and hearing, immense striking power, and controllable black scales. 19
  • His dragon blood is connected to Ancient Dragons rather than being a normal result of Dragon Communion. 15 19

Storm Knight Arts

The old knight trains Lu in the Storm Knights’ swordsmanship, combat skills, and storm-based incantations. Lu initially struggles to access the “source” behind Stormcaller because his mixed human–Ancient Dragon nature does not fit conventional Storm Knight training 15.

  • Storm Blade — Fires a blade of compressed storm wind. 19
  • Storm Foot — Creates a close-range hurricane field that interrupts attacks and destabilizes enemies. 20 25
  • Stormcaller — Channels storm power through weapon movements; its stronger applications consume substantial essence. 15 20
  • Storm-enhanced sword strikes — Uses wind pressure to amplify slashes, thrusts, and finishing blows. 17 25
  • Storm power is shaped by a warrior’s “internal law”: flesh, will, soul, and personal desire rather than technique alone. 40

Dragon Communion

Lu pursues Dragon Communion after being directed to kill Flying Dragon Agheel and retrieve its heart. The discipline grants dragonfire and other draconic incantations, but Melina warns that its endless pursuit of power can erode the mind and transform its practitioner into something inhuman 7 17.

  • Kills Flying Dragon Agheel alone and harvests its heart. 17
  • Casts Dragonfire, including the Storm Knights’ Improved Dragonfire variant. 21 23
  • Uses a spectral dragon head to bite and slam opponents. 25
  • The Dragonblood Illusory Mark substantially improves his Dragon Communion flame and incantations. 20
  • Dragon Communion’s corruptive effects remain a major risk, especially given Lu’s unusually active dragon bloodline. 7 26

Word Spirits and Unsealed Authorities

Lu Mingze identifies several of Lu’s powers as authorities embedded in Lu Mingfei’s origin rather than ordinary learned Word Spirits 28.

  • The Gathering — Creates casting units and provides seemingly limitless mana. 28
  • Noglues — Prevents opponents from using Word Spirits, comparable to Word Spirit: Commandment. 28
  • Dustless Realm / Dustless Land — Repels matter and water from its domain; also functions as an invisible defensive field against alchemical bullets. 29 48
  • Eye of the Storm King — Generates highly controllable hurricanes capable of deforming or destroying targets. 28 48
  • Don’t Die — Lu Mingze identifies this as Lu’s personal authority and states that Nono’s survival depends on it. 28

Swordsmanship and Combat Tactics

Lu begins as an untrained survivor relying on backstabs and desperation, but develops into a formal knight through repeated deaths and harsh instruction 1 15.

  • Uses stealth, backstabs, bows, throwing knives, terrain, and enemy separation to avoid disadvantageous fights. 2 4
  • Studies enemy patterns through repeated death and applies that knowledge in later attempts. 3 24
  • Can fight heavily armored Godrick Knights and exploit weak points such as visor gaps. 4
  • Switches weapons without hesitation when a blade is trapped or ineffective. 5
  • Prioritizes survival over formal honor, using thrown weapons, ambushes, and attacks on vulnerable areas when needed. 17 25

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Banished Knight Armor — Formal Storm Knight armor provided by the old knight. 15
  • Exile Knight Greatswords — Pair of greatswords issued alongside his formal armor. 15
  • Flask of Crimson Tears — Restores his injuries; later strengthened with a Sacred Tear and Melina’s help. 5 23
  • Torrent’s summoning ring — Given by Melina after Torrent chooses Lu as his rider. 6
  • Dragonblood Illusory Mark — A red mark branded onto his palm after the Spirit Knight’s defeat. 20
  • Parting Black Crystal — Paid round-trip teleportation tool between worlds; its Rune cost rises with Lu’s strength and it requires several days to recharge. 27
  • Night Tempering — An invisible sword represented by a dragon-scale-patterned hilt, given to Lu by Caesar. 35 36

Relationships

  • Melina — Traveling companion and negotiated guide. Lu distrusts her initial bargain, but accepts her help toward the Erdtree; she later apologizes for doubting him and brings him to Roundtable Hold. 6 27 37
  • The Old Knight — Lu’s harsh Storm Knight mentor. He coerces Lu into joining the order, trains him brutally, and nevertheless becomes a paternal figure who believes Lu can become a hero. 13 15 40 41
  • Torrent — Spectral steed who chose Lu personally. Lu treats Torrent as a loyal companion and speaks to him when making tactical decisions. 6 22
  • Emiya Shirou — Friend, mentor, and fellow world-traveler. Shirou teaches Lu summoning and interworld-travel tools, trains him for Margit, and provides emotional support during Lu’s isolation. 10 12 26 27
  • Boc — Timid demi-human Lu helps after discovering he was transformed into a tree and rejected by his own kind. Lu refuses to use Boc as bait despite being desperate for a tactical advantage. 7 9
  • Lu Mingze — Mysterious “devil” and contract holder. Lu relies on his knowledge and power while distrusting his motives, especially after sacrificing part of his lifespan for Nono. 1 27 28
  • Nono — One of Lu’s few close friends. Her critical injuries motivate his contract with Lu Mingze and his return to the Three Gorges battle. 27 28
  • Principal Angers — Cassel College principal who shields Lu from political scrutiny and personally commends him after Norton’s death. 33
  • Fingal von Frings — Senior student and chaotic companion. Fingal exploits Lu’s fame by selling unauthorized merchandise, but their conflict ends with an eighty–twenty profit split in Lu’s favor. 34 35
  • Zero — Fellow Cassel College student. After Lu forgets his promise to treat her to lobster tails, he nervously invites her to dinner at Maple Harbor. 49

Story Role / Major Arcs

Stranded in Limgrave

After arriving in the Lands Between, Lu survives through repeated deaths, Rune farming, stealth, and Sites of Grace. He defeats the Beastman of Farum Azula, gains confidence from his first major solo victory, accepts Melina’s partnership, helps Boc, and summons Emiya Shirou when he cannot defeat the Coastal Cave’s Demi-Human chiefs alone 1 5 6 9 10.

Storm Knight Training and Dragon Communion

Lu discovers the Church of Dragon Communion, encounters the old knight, and becomes the successor to the nearly extinct Storm Knights. His training transforms him from a crude survivor into a formal knight, while Dragon Communion gives him a path suited to his mixed blood. He kills Agheel, undergoes dragonification, retrieves the Dragonblood Illusory Mark, and learns Improved Dragonfire 13 15 17 19 21.

Stormveil and Margit

Lu crosses Stormhill, destroys the Castleward Tunnel garrison, and challenges Margit because defeating the gatekeeper is required for free interworld travel. After twenty-three failures, he defeats Margit through accumulated knowledge, Storm skills, Dragon Communion, and ruthless improvisation 23 24 25.

Return to Cassel College

After using the Parting Black Crystal, Lu returns to his original world and receives additional powers from Lu Mingze to confront the Dragon King Norton. His role in Norton’s permanent destruction makes him a politically important figure in the Mixed-Blood world, though he conceals Norton’s remains and remains uncomfortable with his own fame 28 31 33.

Renewed Journey

Fearing that his public reputation as a Dragon King slayer exceeds his true strength, Lu returns to the Lands Between to grow without further sacrificing his lifespan. He reaches Roundtable Hold, resumes exploring Stormveil, and begins confronting the question of why he wants power now that returning home is no longer his sole obsession 37 40 41.
