"This feel is truly comfortable."
"And from the look of Teacher, she seems to be enjoying it a bit too."
Unfortunately, the carriage arrived at the inn far too soon. Guter alighted with a hint of regret and checked in with his teacher at the front desk.
After reaching their respective rooms, Guter had barely set down his luggage when a knock came from outside his door.
He pushed the door open and found Teacher Serie standing there.
"Teacher, are you looking to extend the session?"
Serie's brow twitched. Though she'd never heard the term, she could roughly grasp its meaning.
"Let's save that kind of thing for another time when there's an opportunity."
"Hurry up and get ready. You'll accompany me to the market to buy supplies."
"Our next stop is the Arter Forest. The roads there are rugged and impassable by carriage; we'll have to go on foot. We need to spend several nights there, so the supplies required are both numerous and varied, and we'll split up to handle them."
"If we can't buy everything, we might have to waste another day in this city of the Lant Region."
"Alright, I'll come out after I wash my face."
Guter nodded in agreement. No wonder the coachman hadn't discussed a meeting point for the next day when they parted—it turned out the hired journey only went as far as this city.
By the time Guter finished washing his face in the washroom and came out, he found Serie sitting on his bed waiting for him, her two fair feet swinging back and forth by the bedside.
The delicate whiteness, reflected by the sunlight, shimmered once more in Guter's pupils.
In plain terms, Guter stared straight at them without blinking, until even Serie grew exasperated and stopped her swinging feet.
Only then did Guter's gaze return to normal.
"If you're done washing up, let's head out."
"Here! Take this." Serie said, picking up a suitcase from beside the bed and tossing it toward him.
"Thud"
Guter caught the suitcase steadily, giving it a slight shake in his hand.
Inside, it should be empty, but he couldn't tell what material it was made of—it was noticeably heavier than an ordinary case.
"That thing in your hand is a magical tool suitcase."
As if she had heard Guter's thoughts, Serie began explaining on her own just as he was about to ask.
"The internal storage space of this magical tool suitcase is far larger than it looks, and it can hold a lot of goods."
"All the supplies we need for our overnight stays could probably fit in one suitcase."
"That's great."
Guter praised, "But Teacher, why didn't we prepare everything and pack it in before we set out?"
"..."
After a moment of silence, Serie explained, "Because that would make the suitcase very heavy, and I didn't want to drag such a heavy case all the way here."
"Also, things like repellent for the common insects in the Arter Forest and antidotes for common poisons—only in this bordering region can you buy the most genuine and effective ones."
"Alright, don't ask so many questions."
"Here's the list for you. We'll split up at the market, buy everything, and meet outside the market when we're done."
"Okay."
Taking the list from his teacher, Guter agreed.
Two hours later.
Carrying bags and bundles of supplies, Guter fought his way out of the market and waited outside for his teacher.
Half an hour later.
Still no sign of Teacher Serie, Guter thought for a moment—rather than standing around idly, he might as well open the magical tool suitcase and start organizing the supplies.
An hour later.
After repeated compression and stacking, without damaging any items, Guter had minimized the volume of his own purchases inside the suitcase, leaving ample space for the goods Teacher Serie had bought.
Another hour later.
Having waited outside the market for a full two and a half hours, Guter could no longer sit still.
His magic surged outward, spreading unrestrainedly through the entire market.
Though doing so in a city was a highly discourteous act—a provocation to any magic user who sensed it—efficiency came first, and Guter couldn't be bothered to think about it.
Besides, this was just a border town in the Lant Region. Even if there were any, how many magic users could there be?
Even if he was unlucky enough to stir up one or two in the market, if they picked a fight, he'd just beat them down.
In his magical skill, Guter had full confidence.
In his physical prowess, Guter had absolute confidence.
Given the frail physique of magic users, let alone one or two—even if ten or eight of them ganged up together, they wouldn't be enough for Guter to take down with a single elbow strike.
According to the theory of relativity in physics, it's a given that when Guter's iron fist comes crashing down, a few magic users are bound to take off from the ground on the spot.
Suddenly, Guter's eyes flickered. After spreading his own magic power across most of the marketplace, he finally received feedback of Teacher Serie's magical fluctuations.
Just as Guter was about to retract the magic power he had extended, another faint magical signal suddenly appeared in his perception.
"Damn. I actually ran into another magic user in the marketplace. Hope he's smart enough not to come looking for trouble."
Guter thought to himself as he made his way toward Teacher Serie's location.
But unfortunately, according to the gradually shrinking feedback from his magical detection, the faint magical source he had sensed earlier was slowly moving toward him along the direction of the retracting detection magic.
"Tch."
Guter clicked his tongue lightly. "A rigid, dogmatic old-school type, huh? Taking that whole magic user moral honor-and-shame code that seriously?"
Oh well, since he was the one who had been rude first, if the arriving magic user had a good attitude, he'd let it slide and give him an easy way out.
But if his attitude was poor and he came over throwing his weight around right away, then Guter would have no choice but to teach him the skill of vertical takeoff eleven years ahead of schedule.
(It is currently 21 years before the New Era of Xin; human magic users deciphered a flawed flight magic 11 years before the New Era of Xin.)
Putting this little interruption aside for now, Guter hurried quickly toward Teacher Serie's location in the marketplace, wanting to see what she was up to and why she was taking so long.
At the other end of the marketplace, in front of an antique stall.
Serie had been squatting here for quite a while, glancing at the antiques and then at the price tags.
At the same time, she was racking her brain to recall memories of the era when the antiques were produced, comparing them to see if they were correct.
Without realizing it, almost the entire afternoon had slipped by.
Finally, Guter arrived and locked onto his teacher, who was still squatting in front of the antique stall examining the goods. He couldn't help but feel a bit helpless.
That old geezer from the Shang and Zhou dynasties, off to buy last week's fakes again?
