Background / History

Serie is an elf archmage who has lived since the Mythical Era, before humanity could use magic. Her lifetime of study and collection has made her effectively a living record of magical history, possessing or understanding nearly every known human spell. Magic beyond her knowledge is generally limited to curses, Goddess Magic, or effects that violate magical laws. 5 14

She once trained Flamme, whose wish was to create an era in which everyone could use magic. Serie initially regarded this ideal and Flamme’s favored Flower Field Creation Magic as naive and impractical. Nevertheless, Flamme helped remove taboos against human magical research, established foundational theories, and enabled the rise of human magic; Serie ultimately acknowledged that Flamme’s ideal had been realized. 4

Serie also taught Frieren. Though she resisted teaching Frieren Flower Field Creation Magic because she considered it meaningless, she relented when Frieren persistently asked. Following the death of Frieren’s senior disciple sister at the hands of a demon, Serie advised Frieren to become more cunning and ruthless toward demons. 142

In the present era, Serie publicly emerged and founded the Continental Magic Association. She announced that any mage who met her standards could receive the magic they most desired, then held the First Mage Examination in Oysaster before planning to establish the Association headquarters in the Holy City of Hutrall. 5 8

Appearance

Serie is an elf with prominent elven features, golden eyes, fair skin, and long ears. She is often described as small in stature but carries an overwhelming magical presence. 34 91

  • Often wears a Veil Robe. 160
  • Has golden eyes that become notably sharp when discussing dangerous magical knowledge. 91
  • Can appear disheveled after oversleeping, with messy hair and pajamas partly visible beneath her outerwear. 14

Personality

Serie is exacting, proud of magic’s exclusivity, and highly selective when accepting disciples. She prioritizes talent over diligence, background, or status; during examinations, she does not care about an applicant’s identity so long as they are not a demon. 8 26

Despite her stern and often dismissive manner, Serie is deeply invested in her disciples. She retains memories of former disciples, trusts Guter with a deceased disciple’s research, supports Gumi’s pursuit of revenge while recognizing its cost, and explicitly defines her role as one who must protect her disciples. 10 21 92 181

Her immense age leaves her sensitive to the brevity of human lives. She has difficulty recalling her past disciples’ flaws, yet their ideals and choices continue to affect her decisions. 10 33

  • Dislikes excessive formality, crowds, and political ceremonies. 89 96
  • Becomes absorbed in magical research and may ignore immediate social obligations. 84
  • Has a playful, teasing side with trusted companions, particularly Guter and Frieren. 14 68 125
  • Is prone to lingering at antique stalls. 125
  • Values efficient use of talent and refuses to teach spells she considers a waste of a disciple’s time. 75

Abilities & Skills

Vast Magical Knowledge

Serie has accumulated a near-unmatched body of magical knowledge over her long life. Her private library alone contains grimoires on the scale of an imperial royal collection, and is only a fraction of her total collection. 5 14

  • Can grant qualified disciples instruction in the one spell they most desire. 5 14
  • Can reconstruct forgotten spell formulas from scratch. 60
  • Identifies ancient magical practices, ruins, and their historical development. 75 76
  • Understands the limits and potential of human and demonic magic. 125

Magical Analysis and Innovation

Serie can rapidly analyze unfamiliar magical systems and derive new spells from their underlying principles. After receiving access to the Reparo Magic Book, she studied it overnight, learned the spell, and developed the high-level Silent Spell technique. 91 92

  • Determined that the Magic Book represented a separate magical system capable of producing undefendable “Curse” magic. 91
  • Abstracted the system’s theory and estimated its low upper limit of raw spell power. 92
  • Enhanced Guter’s CD player through her research. 84

Combat Magic

Serie possesses overwhelming mana reserves, refined control, and the ability to neutralize threats immediately. 5 68 133

  • Cast a barrier around the First Mage Examination hall, controlling entry until candidates were called. 8
  • Easily penetrated a barrier and defeated an attempted sealing operation arranged by several of her disciples, swapping places with Hafka at the decisive moment. 114
  • Destroyed a young Chaos Flower before its Sleeping Curse could endanger Guter. 133
  • Can apply top-tier Healing Magic through sheer mana volume and casting duration. 68
  • Restrained Guter with magic and used Sensory Mobilization Magic to reverse his perceptions of pain and pleasure. 109

Magical Perception and Assessment

Serie accurately evaluates magical potential, talent, and dangerous abnormalities in mages. 12 21

  • Detected that a candidate’s secret medicine had consumed his potential and was burning his life. 12
  • Recommended Icicle Cherry sap to slow the medicine’s effects and ease the mage’s final days. 12
  • Recognized Guter’s ability to develop both magical power and physical strength, entrusting him with Bodi’s Body Tempering research. 21
  • Suspects that Guter possesses an unusual identity or origin, but refuses to force him to reveal his secrets. 92

Communication Magic

Serie uses a Meteorite Bird as a communications medium. 56

  • Can leave messages through birds formed or controlled with magic. 160
