History

Konoha era

The Uchiha were one of Konoha’s two founding great clans alongside the Senju. Their historical privileges included a large share of village funding, Security Force allocations, tax-derived income, business profits, and an Explosive Tag manufacturing industry. These inherited advantages later became a source of conflict as the Sarutobi Clan expanded in population and influence. 25

Despite their prestige, the clan’s internal welfare system neglected some families of fallen shinobi. Uchiha Hara, whose parents died in war, grew up in poverty in a leaking house and was mocked by other clan children for being an orphan. 1

The clan’s principal institutional role in Konoha was operating the Security Force. Its frequent contact with civilians made the Uchiha a visible target for resentment, fear, envy, and hostility—especially because officers sometimes used the Sharingan while enforcing the law. 3 36

The clan was also politically and militarily isolated. Its leadership generally sent few children to the Ninja Academy; after more than two decades, only slightly more than thirty Uchiha had graduated, and only six remained on Konoha’s regular military roster. 87

Wartime decline

During the Third Shinobi World War, Fugaku mobilized 2,000 Uchiha for the Hidden Mist front to counter accusations that the clan avoided military service. 128

The decision reflected a recurring dilemma: remaining in Konoha to preserve strength damaged the clan’s reputation, while fighting for village recognition risked further reducing its population and political influence. 25 128

After the Nine-Tails attack, suspicion toward the clan intensified because the beast had been seen with Sharingan-like eyes. Villagers harassed Uchiha patrol officers, while harsher police enforcement further worsened public hostility. 166 219

Konoha’s leadership subsequently relocated the clan from the village center to its old southeastern grounds under the stated rationale of public safety. Fugaku’s objections were overruled by Hiruzen and his advisers. 166

Root persecution and the preservation plan

Danzo viewed the Uchiha as both a political threat and a source of Sharingan for his Hashirama Cell experiments. Root surveillance recorded 283 active Uchiha shinobi, including 124 Sharingan users, and Danzo began provoking conflict through inspections, rumors, civilian harassment, mission obstruction, and covert killings. 209 210 211 219

Rather than pursue either a coup or submission, Uchiha Hara, Shisui, and Itachi created the Uchiha Preservation Plan. Shisui and Itachi posed as potential village informants, while Hara prepared to replace the clan with lifelike earthen decoys and transfer the real members through the Demon Refining Pot. 211

Shisui persuaded the clan assembly to abandon Konoha for the Land of Fields. Fugaku authorized the liquidation and transfer of clan businesses, property, weapons, scrolls, and funds; approximately 870 million ryo was moved to Land of Fields accounts before the evacuation. 220 221 222

False massacre and relocation

Konoha interpreted the Uchiha’s asset liquidation as preparation for a coup. Hiruzen, Danzo, Root, ANBU, and a 2,000-member Sarutobi private army launched a preemptive assault on the clan grounds. 222

The Uchiha had already escaped through a hidden passage. The attackers killed artificial decoys whose eyes self-destructed, then triggered explosive traps that burned the compound and killed many Root operatives. Konoha gained no Sharingan, prisoners, wealth, or usable clan property. 222

Hiruzen publicly attributed the destruction to an accidental detonation during an emergency excavation, while the Ninja World accepted that the Uchiha had been exterminated. 222

Reorganization in the Land of Fields

In the Land of Fields, the former Uchiha received housing, schools, employment opportunities, medical care, and access to impartial civil-service examinations. 220 231

One hundred thirty-seven former Uchiha took the Oversight Department examination; ninety-six passed, including fifty-six women. Seven of the ten highest scorers were women. 231

To prevent their old name from bringing danger or suspicion to their new society, Fugaku proposed abandoning the Uchiha surname. The clan accepted and divided into four related families:

• Yu family — descended from Setsuna’s branch; includes Yu Setsuna and Yu Shisui.
• Zhi family — descended from Fugaku’s branch; includes Zhi Fugaku, Zhi Itachi, and Zhi Sasuke.
• Bo family — descended from the Third Elder’s branch.
• Hua family — established by Uchiha Hara, who became Hua Yuan. 231

Characteristics

Sharingan

The Sharingan is the Uchiha’s defining Kekkei Genkai. It provides enhanced dynamic vision, improves Genjutsu, and is feared for its ability to read movements and copy techniques. 36

The clan maintained a major technical inheritance, especially in Fire Release and visual illusions. A cache recovered from Uchiha Jiang and Amano contained 1,469 techniques. 25

Police and military role

The Uchiha’s control of Konoha’s Security Force gave them authority over public order but isolated them from civilians and other clans. Shisui later characterized the position as that of “watchdogs”: responsible for enforcing village order while absorbing public resentment and becoming expendable during unrest. 143
