Nature of Sagehood

A Sage is described as a being who endures myriad calamities without wearing away, remains unstained by karma, and exists alongside Heaven and the Dao. Hongjun declares that “beneath a Sage, all are ants,” establishing Sagehood as the conventional peak of the Primordial World’s cultivation hierarchy 51.

• Sage ascension releases overwhelming pressure capable of forcing ordinary beings, Daluo Golden Immortals, and even Quasi-Saints to kneel 71 78.
• A Heavenly Dao Sage entrusts their Primordial Spirit to Heaven’s Way. As long as Heaven’s Way survives, their body can be reconstructed after destruction 89.
• Sagehood is not synonymous with unquestionable combat supremacy: Zhu Rong, after reaching the Primordial Daluo Golden Immortal realm, destroys Yuanshi Tianzun’s Sage body in battle 88 89.
• Hongjun regards the Law-Proving cultivation of the Twelve Ancestral Witches as a potential force beyond Heaven’s Way’s control 90.

Known Sages

Sagehood and the Law-Proving Path

The Twelve Ancestral Witches reject Hongjun’s Sage path because they regard it as submission to Heaven’s Way. Their Law Dao instead centers on directly mastering and embodying their individual laws 34 43 51.

• Dijiang considers Sage Seats useless to the Ancestral Witches and promotes the Primordial Origin path as their alternative 51.
• Dijiang reaches the Primordial Daluo Golden Immortal realm by dissolving his Space Dao Fruit into Space Origin and fully embodying the Space Law 71.
• Zhu Rong reaches the same realm by merging Flame Origin into himself during his battle with Yuanshi 88.
• A Primordial Daluo Golden Immortal lacks a Sage’s Heaven’s Way-based immortality, but can equal or exceed a Sage in direct combat 89.

Limits and Vulnerabilities

Dependence on Heaven’s Way

A Sage’s resurrection depends on Heaven’s Way rather than personal invulnerability. Yuanshi’s body, Primordial Spirit, and bones are destroyed by Zhu Rong, but Heaven’s Way gathers his remains and reforms him 88 89.

Defeat and Humiliation

Yuanshi’s Sage status does not prevent Zhu Rong from shattering his defenses, injuring him repeatedly, and destroying his physical body. His defeat undermines the belief that Sages cannot be challenged 86 87 88.

Borrowed Power

Hongjun secretly strengthens Yuanshi with Heaven’s Way power after his resurrection, increasing his Sage body and mana far beyond an ordinary early-stage Sage. Yuanshi mistakes this external aid for proof of his own superiority 90.

Major Events

• Hongjun’s ascension and Dao lectures — Hongjun becomes the first Sage and summons cultivators to Violet Firmament Palace, where he teaches the Dao and distributes Primordial Purple Qi as the foundation for Heavenly Dao Sagehood 34 51.
• Nuwa’s ascension — Nuwa creates the first humans with the Nine Heavens Resting Soil, Three Lights Divine Water, and Gourd Vine; Heaven’s Way grants her immense merit and she becomes a Sage 70 71.
• Arrival of the Sage Era — Laozi, Yuanshi, Tongtian, Jieyin, and Zhunti each attain Sagehood through establishing sects or making vows 78 79.
• Yuanshi’s challenge at Mount Buzhou — Yuanshi attacks the Witch Cult to avenge his earlier humiliation, but Zhu Rong breaks through during their battle and destroys his Sage body 85 86 88.
• Hongjun’s test — Concerned by the Witch Cult’s independent strength, Hongjun empowers Yuanshi through Heaven’s Way to test Zhu Rong and the Ancestral Witches 90.
