Power Progression
Susanoo’s forms vary by wielder; later forms are not always a single linear evolution shared by every user.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Basic Form | 48 | Madara’s initial construct becomes substantially sturdier after his Mangekyō Sharingan surges under emotional strain. |
| Second Stage | 48 | Madara’s Susanoo gains a flesh-and-blood body and armor during his battle with Hashirama. |
| Third Stage | 65 | Madara is stated to have developed Susanoo to the third stage; Setsuna’s version later gains a lower body and a two-handed spear. 65 162 |
| Fourth Stage | 65 | Madara can barely enter this stage at full output; it is described as a complete, armored form. 65 203 |
| Complete Body / Perfected Susanoo | 82 | Jobu’s gigantic form can fly and rapidly recover damage through immense chakra reserves, but its size makes it slow and easy to target. |
| Three-Headed, Six-Armed Form | 86 | Jobu evolves his Complete Body Susanoo beyond its prior limits, abandoning the Wood Golem, enlarging it beyond 150 meters, and developing six wings and a reinforced Spiral Bone Spear. |
| Great Tengu Form | 89 | Madara manifests a four-armed demonic warrior with a Great Tengu mask and four massive blades. |
| Susanoo God | 137 | A form larger than Complete Body Susanoo; it continuously consumes chakra to repair itself while resisting overwhelming attacks. |
| Mass-Clone Susanoo | 195 | Jobu uses a mass Shadow Clone technique to split his three-headed, six-armed Susanoo into more than one hundred armed constructs and tear apart a stellar sealing net. |
Background / History
Susanoo first appears when Madara enters the Chinoike conflict, immediately rendering the enemy’s self-detonating fighters ineffective and dominating the battlefield. Its appearance is compared to the descent of a god or demon. 35
During Madara’s clash with Hashirama, the technique develops from its basic manifestation into the Second Stage after Madara’s rage and Mangekyō ocular power intensify. Hashirama’s Wood Human and Wood Dragon are able to contest the armored construct, establishing Susanoo as a weapon suited to confront giant Wood Release creations. 48
Jobu later expands the technique’s use beyond direct combat. Madara places Susanoo over Jobu’s Wood Golem, while Jobu supplies chakra and Wood Dragons in a combined assault against Hashirama’s True Several Thousand Hands. The fused defense withstands part of the Buddha’s attack, but the impact leaves Madara bleeding from the eyes and Jobu internally injured. 69
On the moon, Jobu combines Susanoo with Wood Release, Shikotsumyaku, Garaga’s natural energy, and eventually the Rinnegan and Tenseigan. His enhanced three-headed, six-armed form is powerful enough to confront Otsutsuki Hamura, though Hamura’s Six Paths Attraction and sealing gates can restrain it. 80 86 87
Appearance
Susanoo manifests as an immense humanoid warrior made from materialized chakra. Its appearance, armament, mask, scale, and combat role differ according to its wielder’s ocular power. 69 177
- Early and mid-stage forms resemble armored warriors in ancient Warring States-era armor. 163
- Fourth-stage forms possess complete bodies and heavy armor. 203
- Madara’s Great Tengu form has four arms, a demonic mask, wings, and four massive swords. 89
- Jobu’s enhanced form has three heads, six arms, six wings, and a giant Spiral Bone Spear. 86
- Individual wielders can form distinct weapons, including swords, bows, shuriken, spears, magatama, and chakra-forged bone blades. 94 162 184 195
Abilities & Skills
Chakra Manifestation and Armor
Susanoo materializes chakra into a giant armored combat body. It can protect its user from large-scale ninjutsu, explosions, elemental assaults, and direct physical attacks.
- Can shield its wielder while attacking independently or in tandem with the user’s own techniques. 69 95
- Can endure attacks that destroy mountains, though sufficiently powerful strikes can crack, shatter, or destroy its armor. 89 90 170
- High chakra reserves allow rapid self-repair after damage. 82
- Normally requires intact Sharingan in both eyes; exceptionally advanced users such as Madara can still use it after losing their eyes. 167 189
- Sustained use strains the wielder’s chakra and ocular power, causing eye pain, bleeding, exhaustion, or temporary blindness. 69 163
Armament Creation
Each Susanoo can create chakra weapons that reflect its wielder’s individual ocular power and fighting style.
- Madara’s forms wield giant swords and can produce destructive sword waves. 89
- Izuna’s Susanoo uses a great bow capable of firing Amaterasu-infused arrows. 94
- Setsuna’s third-stage form uses a spear and launches Ninety-Nine Magatama, an attack comparable to a Tailed Beast Bomb. 162 163
- Obito’s Susanoo uses Kamui-infused shuriken that tear through space. 184
- Jobu’s six-armed form can create All-Killing Ash Bones, chakra-forged bone blades that cause struck targets to disintegrate. 195
External Armor and Fusion
Because Susanoo is materialized chakra, it can be placed over other giant beings or constructs if the wielder has enough chakra and ocular power.
- Madara armors Jobu’s Wood Golem with Susanoo while Jobu supports it with chakra and Wood Dragons. 69
- Susanoo can also cover Tailed Beasts, including the Nine-Tails. 69
- Jobu’s lunar construct combines Susanoo, a Wood Golem, Shikotsumyaku weaponry, and Garaga’s senjutsu chakra. 80
Flight and Mobility
Advanced forms can develop wings and fly.
- Perfected Susanoo can fly, but its enormous size makes takeoff slow and leaves it vulnerable to concentrated attacks. 82
- Jobu’s enhanced form develops six wings after its original pair can no longer support its increased size. 86
- In the pirate world, Jobu can maintain his fourth-stage Susanoo for roughly a day using stamina rather than chakra. 203
Projection and Multiplication
Some wielders can create multiple Susanoo through clones or time-based ocular techniques.
- Madara creates dozens of Shadow Clones, each capable of using Susanoo. 90
- Setsuna projects a past version of himself into the present, enabling a second Susanoo to fight beside him. Attempting a third projection risks temporary blindness. 163
- Jobu creates more than one hundred Susanoo through mass Shadow Clones to break a celestial sealing formation. 195
Limitations
- Its strength depends directly on the wielder’s chakra, ocular power, and physical endurance. 69 160
- Large forms are powerful but can become slow, conspicuous targets. 82
- Complete Body Susanoo can be shattered by overwhelming techniques such as Hashirama’s Top Transformed Buddha. 90
- Even Eternal Mangekyō users retain an upper limit on ocular output; inexhaustible recovery does not eliminate physical limits. 163
- The highest forms cannot guarantee protection against opponents such as Saitama, whose Simple Punch shatters Madara’s Susanoo blade. 236

Trivia
- Susanoo’s appearance is not standardized: weapons and masks differ according to the user’s ocular power. 177
- A fourth-stage Susanoo is complete and heavily armored but lacks the wings needed for flight; Fugaku and Setsuna cannot normally reach Perfect Susanoo due to their ocular-power limits. 160
- In the pirate world, ordinary chakra-based ninjutsu is restricted, but Susanoo persists and is governed primarily by stamina. 203 204
