Background / History

Madara grew up during the Warring States Era as the son of Uchiha Tajima and the elder brother of Izuna. Even as a child, he was regarded as the strongest member of his generation; at eleven, he could reportedly defeat an entire mission squad alone. His talent made him the Uchiha’s expected future leader and a figure younger clansmen feared during training. 2 3

He treated Jobu as a younger cousin, promising to protect him during Jobu’s first battle and later personally guiding him in combat. Although aggressive in training, Madara restrained himself and used the match to demonstrate the need for taijutsu, speed, and ninjutsu beyond shurikenjutsu. 1 2

Madara secretly met Senju Hashirama at the river dividing their territories. Their childhood friendship survived despite the hatred between their clans, but discovery by Tajima and Butsuma led to open conflict. Their relationship became increasingly strained as Madara assumed the duties of the Uchiha heir and later clan head. 3 4 13

Following Tajima’s death in the same period as Butsuma Senju’s, fifteen-year-old Madara sought recognition as Uchiha clan head. Elders questioned his impulsiveness and combat-focused outlook, but Shangwu’s ninja-village plan secured their acceptance of Madara’s leadership. 13

As clan head, Madara increasingly delegated political and administrative matters to Jobu while concentrating on training, combat, and strengthening the Uchiha. Jobu eventually arranged Madara’s marriage to Uzumaki Mito as a politically necessary alliance with the Uzumaki Clan, despite Madara’s embarrassment and initial refusal. 64 67

Madara survived Hashirama’s repeated challenges, helped establish Konoha in the Land of Fire, and accepted the position of First after Jobu and Izuna declined it. His accession broadened his responsibility beyond the Uchiha to Konoha’s civilian and shinobi population. 74

During the later conflicts surrounding the Ten-Tails, Madara’s Rinnegan, Indra lineage, and rivalry with Hashirama placed him at the center of battles involving Hagoromo, revived Senju forces, and Six Paths-level powers. He remained loyal to Jobu’s Uchiha-led vision of peace through overwhelming strength rather than Hashirama’s ideal of negotiated reconciliation. 106 111 113

After Black Zetsu temporarily used his corpse as a puppet, Obito revived Madara through the Outer Path: Heavenly Life. Jobu then exposed Black Zetsu’s manipulation of the Uchiha stone tablet and showed Madara the relevant memories through genjutsu. Madara accepted that he had been deceived but resolved to surpass his past self and oppose both Kaguya and Hagoromo if necessary. 186 187

Madara later fought alongside the Uchiha in conflicts extending from the Ninja World to the Ōtsutsuki Main Family’s realm and subsequently other worlds. Personality

Madara is intensely proud of the Uchiha name and believes a clan’s survival depends on demonstrating strength severe enough to deter all challengers. He argued for rescuing the Hagoromo Clan partly to recover Uchiha supplies, but chiefly because failing to retaliate would damage the clan’s fearsome reputation. 5

In his early leadership development, Madara viewed weak clans primarily as resources to be used. Tajima criticized this narrow outlook, and Madara accepted Jobu’s support rather than treating him as a rival, asking him to help strengthen the clan while Madara pursued the position of clan head. 9

His bond with Hashirama repeatedly conflicts with his clan loyalty. Madara is drawn to Hashirama’s vision of peace and briefly agrees to trust him, yet he ultimately sees the Senju–Uchiha blood feud as an unavoidable reality. Izuna’s injury and Tobirama’s actions destroy much of his remaining trust, turning his friendship with Hashirama into genuine killing intent. 17 18 19 21

Madara is intensely battle-hungry and grows more exhilarated when facing a powerful opponent. Rather than fearing Hashirama’s Thousand-Armed Buddha, the Marine Admirals, Kaido, Whitebeard, or Saitama, he welcomes each as an opportunity to test and advance his own strength. 68 212 219 236
