Leadership

Background

The Senju are one of the Land of Fire’s two foremost ninja clans, alongside the Uchiha. Their feud has endured for centuries, possibly millennia, and repeatedly draws both clans and their allies into large-scale warfare. 11 39

The clan descends from Ashura Ōtsutsuki and inherited unusually powerful vitality and chakra reserves. Its rivalry with the Uchiha reflects the later continuation of the ideological conflict between Ashura and Indra, whose descendants became the Senju and Uchiha respectively. 91

During Madara and Hashirama’s childhood, Butsuma Senju confronted Uchiha Tajima at the river separating their territories. The encounter exposed the hostility surrounding their heirs’ private friendship and escalated immediately into combat. 3 4

After Butsuma’s death, Hashirama became clan head while still young. During the following two years, the Senju reconciled with the Uzumaki Clan, began intermarrying with them, and increased their population by approximately one-third. 13

Hashirama’s repeated attempts to negotiate peace with Madara fail because neither clan can accept the losses inflicted by the other. Madara ultimately declares war, using the Uchiha Clan’s newfound funds to sustain a prolonged campaign against the Senju. 44 45

The Senju initially assembled a large coalition against the Uchiha, consisting of more than four hundred Senju supported by Uzumaki, Sarutobi, Shimura, and other allied ninja. After the Hyuga Clan joined the Uchiha side, however, Tobirama abandoned the offensive and organized a defensive retreat. 46 49 50 51

During the final Uchiha campaign, Hashirama withdrew with the surviving Senju while leaving Sarutobi and Uzumaki forces behind. The Uchiha then destroyed the Senju’s remaining stronghold and seized the clan’s techniques and Tobirama’s research. Apart from members who were away on missions, the Senju were effectively exterminated. 57 72 73

The Senju were later restored through the revival of Hashirama, Tobirama, and additional Senju warriors. After the Great War, the reconstituted clan was placed below the Uchiha and alongside the Hyuga within the new order. Hashirama accepted Uchiha leadership in exchange for peace and the opportunity to accompany the Uchiha into space, while Tobirama continued to reject submission. 91 92 131 132

Clan Characteristics

Chakra Reserves and Vitality

Senju ninja are noted for unusually great chakra reserves and tenacious life force rather than a universally shared Kekkei Genkai. Their resilience lets them endure combat that would incapacitate many other shinobi. As Ashura’s descendants, they possess vitality and chakra far beyond that of ordinary humans. 17 46 91

Hashirama’s Wood Release is an exceptional power within the clan and its greatest battlefield asset. He can produce wood constructs without hand seals and has continually expanded the technique’s scale. 17 20

Allies and Enemies

• Uchiha Clan — The Senju’s hereditary enemy. Hashirama sought reconciliation, but Madara and much of the Uchiha rejected peace and pursued war. The Uchiha eventually destroyed the original Senju Clan, later incorporating its revived remnants into a subordinate alliance. 18 44 45 72 73 132
• Uzumaki Clan — Historically close allies who reconciled and intermarried with the Senju. Uzumaki ninja reinforced the Senju during the war and sacrificed themselves to help Tobirama escape. Their relationship collapsed when Hashirama abandoned Uzumaki forces, after which Ashina made the clan a dependent of the Uchiha. 13 46 50 57
• Sarutobi Clan — A Senju-aligned force that contributed more than eighty ninja to the major war. Its surviving members were later absorbed into the Uchiha power structure after Hashirama left them behind. 46 57

Story Role

Conflict with the Uchiha

The Senju and Uchiha repeatedly fight without decisive results while their leaders and heirs confront one another directly. Madara and Hashirama are initially evenly matched, while Tobirama survives coordinated attacks from Izuna and Jobu through tactical use of Steel Wire and Body Flicker. 4

As the conflict worsens, Tobirama treats eliminating Uchiha fighters as a practical solution to the clans’ rivalry. His destruction of Izuna’s returned Sharingan triggers Madara’s unstable Mangekyō Sharingan awakening and escalates the war further. 19 22 23

Hashirama’s Wood Release emerges as a major counterweight to the Uchiha. His Wood Golem and Wood Dragon halt Madara’s advance, while his later Flower Tree World Advent places Madara at a severe disadvantage. 17 50

Hashirama’s Peace Proposal

Hashirama believes that the Uchiha and Senju can create a village where clans and civilians live without fear of war. He argues that reconciliation between their clans could inspire others throughout the Ninja World to do the same. 44

“As long as we can put aside the hatred between the Senju Clan and Uchiha Clan, the other ninja clans will see hope.” 44

Madara rejects the proposal as fantasy, arguing that clan duty, betrayal, and survival make lasting peace impossible. His refusal leads to the Uchiha’s renewed declaration of war. 44 45

Uchiha–Senju War

The Senju mobilize more than 400 of their own ninja, backed by roughly 100 Uzumaki, over 80 Sarutobi, more than 50 Shimura, and additional allied clans—around 700 fighters in total. 46

Although the Senju coalition initially possesses a numerical advantage over the Uchiha force, the Uchiha side is reinforced by the Hagoromo and Fuma Clans. The later arrival of more than one hundred Hyuga Branch Family ninja decisively shifts the balance against the Senju. 46 49

Hashirama remains occupied fighting Madara while the Senju forces suffer severe losses. After Tobirama returns from the battlefield, he orders a defensive retreat rather than a futile counterattack and establishes multiple lines of Earth Release, Water Release, sealing, elemental, and long-range defenses. 50 51

The defensive formation temporarily halts the Uchiha-led assault, but the Senju coalition continues to disintegrate. The Shimura Clan betrays the wounded Senju, while Hashirama ultimately retreats with the remaining Senju and leaves the Sarutobi and Uzumaki behind. 53 57

Destruction and Reconstitution

The Uchiha’s final campaign targets the Senju’s territory, water supply, rear compound, and archives. Jobu personally raids the ninjutsu repository and recovers Tobirama’s Shadow Clone, Multiple Shadow Clone, Bringer-of-Darkness, Mutual Multiplying Explosive Tags, and incomplete Flying Raijin techniques. 72

The Senju Clan is effectively destroyed, along with most of the clans that supported it. The Uchiha seize the Land of Fire and become its dominant power. 73

Hashirama and Tobirama later return through resurrection, and additional Senju are restored through the Outer Path. The reconstituted clan is ranked below the Uchiha and alongside the Hyuga within the new order. Hashirama accepts Uchiha leadership and agrees to accompany the Uchiha on future expeditions, while Tobirama refuses to obey Uchiha commands. 91 92 131 132

Later Political Role

After the Great War, the Senju cease to function as an independent major power. Hashirama accepts administrative cooperation with the Uchiha in exchange for peace and a role in the Uchiha’s expansion beyond the Ninja World. Tobirama remains the principal dissenter, insisting that the Senju do not belong to the Uchiha. 131

The reconstituted Senju receive Hagoromo’s Six Paths Sacred Tools, although Jobu deliberately gives them less consideration than the Uchiha and the more favored Hyuga. The clan remains part of the Uchiha-led order while preserving a degree of separate leadership under Hashirama and Tobirama. 132
