Hill paid no mind to the Fate Power that had come his way by chance.
He had encountered it on Toril, too... Once a person's strength and presence reached a certain level, all kinds of fates naturally became entangled with them.
But as long as they remained firm in their resolve and resisted temptation, it had no effect.
Some people with sufficiently powerful minds, however, could glimpse things concerning themselves in those threads of fate... Such as what they stood to gain if they intervened.
That was why so many Archmages beyond Legendary rank got swept up in Fate Power: they let temptation overcome their self-control. Elminster, though, probably just wanted to join the excitement. That was why he always came away unscathed. He seemed to be involved all the time, but rarely acted himself.
After Black Eye fell, the Mages who thought they could do as they pleased because Midnight lacked control became insufferably arrogant. That was when Elminster began to find Toril dull and started spending long stretches of time in the Astral Plane.
Hill would not even look at those fates... He had never believed that anything they calculated would be what he wanted.
And what else did he lack?
It was not that he never relied on his luck, but he only used it for minor things like finding resources. He would never entrust his fate to it.
Hill smiled faintly at the now-empty cliff and turned his wrist.
A light rain began to fall over the slope.
The instant it soaked into the soil, grass shoots burst up all across the mountain and rapidly unfurled... They were of every variety, but all bore shades of blue and white, like the sea on the other side.
White and blue bellflowers also shot up in the rain,
