Hill thought seriously for a while, then decided to pretend he had noticed nothing.

Once he got involved in things, they were all too likely to take a bizarre turn.

This was a battle of wits between Shar and the Undead... hadn't she been using her own methods to deduce their movements, without ever considering asking anyone else?

Of course, Shar and William kept their respective endeavors fairly separate to begin with. Neither generally asked the other about their own objectives.

But Shar had not even considered sounding out Hill, who had very close ties to the Undead.

The Lady of Dark Night seemed to have changed a great deal, but in truth, she only made concessions where William was concerned.

Hill silently reminded himself: Shar is only friendly toward me in matters involving William, and only kind when her own interests aren't involved. Don't get full of yourself.

Fortunately, his greatest weakness was his lack of guile, but his greatest strength was that he did not easily take things to heart.

So far, Lathander was the only one among the Toril Gods who could move him even a little.

As for whether Shar could get what she wanted... if she kept analyzing the Undead's behavior through the lens of a normal person, she was bound to fail.

Still, Hill did not think she was incapable of realizing that. The time-limited, limited-quantity quests she used to bait the Undead were very carefully designed, almost revealing which choices they would make when benefits were at stake.
