Glass in Toril was actually Glass Steel, an Elven specialty. Made through a complex alchemical process, it combined the hardness of steel with the transparency of glass. This extraordinary material, created by Winged Elves and Sun Elves, was harder than steel but much lighter. Though primarily used in construction, some Elves and humans who liked drawing attention to themselves made armor and even weapons from it.

It was quite expensive and relatively rare in Faerûn. Sun Elves liked using it to build palaces and noble estates, and almost never sold it.

Anyone with that much money would be better off getting a suit of Mithril armor. At least that could blend in among the white armor on a battlefield.

Glass Steel armor could not. It stood out too much. In some ways, its transparent, reflective armor and weapons attracted more unwanted attention than they offered tactical advantages.

In other words, they drew the most fire on a battlefield. Any Elf or human who used them was either too confident in their abilities or too confident in their intelligence.

Hill had actually known how to make Glass Steel for ages, but for someone who could easily obtain crystal, it held little appeal.
