History

Black Prison

Chen Shaohe was imprisoned in Black Prison with his fourth brother, Chen Jichuan, for six years. Their father, uncles, and three elder brothers died there through illness or forced labor, leaving the two brothers as each other’s only remaining family 1.

At sixteen, Shaohe was physically exhausted and prematurely aged by mining, yet retained his vigilance and attachment to Chen Jichuan. When Chen Jichuan obtained the Dao Fruit, Shaohe immediately guarded the cave entrance and treated the discovery as something worth dying to protect 2. He later awakened Fire Control, but accepted Chen Jichuan’s warning that exposing their power or seeking immediate revenge would be fatal 3.

The brothers escaped during the chaos in Black Prison and fled into Centipede Mountain. Shaohe’s first violent encounter with Black Armor soldiers convinced him that Fire Control alone was insufficient; he asked Chen Jichuan to teach him martial arts once they found safety 12.

Recovery on Begonia Mountain

After escaping, Shaohe spent a month recovering on Begonia Mountain. Proper food, exercise, Altered Ability practice, and the Foundation of Rectification Stretching gradually repaired his posture, complexion, and health 23.

He initially focused on Fire Control, but its slow progress made him eager to pursue martial arts. Chen Jichuan trained him in the Land-Flying, Iron Bull, Crouching Tiger, and Wave-Wrapping techniques, strengthened his blood and qi with the Blood-Burning Technique, and supplied Spirit Jujubes for internal cultivation 33. Shaohe later learned to construct the Blood-Burning Art independently through an Iron Lotus Seed, ending his complete dependence on Chen Jichuan for blood-and-qi training 36.

Revenge and the Martial Alliance

Shaohe viewed Chen Jichuan’s attacks on the Wusheng Sect as his own revenge. He celebrated the killing of deputy sect master He Mingli, recognizing it as the brothers’ first major retaliation against the organization that had enslaved them 69.

He entered the Martial Alliance through its Talent-Recruitment Proclamation under the name Jade Qilin. Chen Jichuan steered him toward safe, useful work in herb cultivation, artifact research, and administration rather than frontline fighting 84. Shaohe eventually became Director of the Medicinal Affairs Bureau, the Martial Alliance’s chief alchemist, and a member of the Lesser Governance Council 211.

He personally executed Qian Lai, the Black Prison overseer who had whipped the brothers and other miners. Shaohe burned him alive with Fire Control, then ensured his death before leaving; Chen Jichuan regarded the act as the final removal of Shaohe’s lingering trauma from Black Prison 85.

Move to Coiling Dragon Mountain

Though initially determined to remain in Great Chu until he was stronger, Shaohe later chose to leave with Chen Jichuan after concluding that Great Chu’s spiritual environment would waste his potential 142 212. Chen Jichuan secretly settled him in Flame Dragon Grotto and concealed their kinship to prevent enemies from using Shaohe as leverage 212.

Shaohe later joined the Seven Profound Sect’s Alchemy Hall. Under Chen Jichuan’s personal instruction, he developed into a First-Rank alchemist and advanced steadily through Qi Refinement 369. By age 139, his cultivation conditions—advanced methods, harmless spirit medicines, and repeated formation trials—surpassed those available to most Spirit Transformation Patriarchs 400.

Appearance

Shaohe was sixteen when first seen in Black Prison, where forced mining left him deathly pale, dust-covered, exhausted, and as aged in appearance as his older brother 1. Following his escape, physical rehabilitation corrected much of his hunched posture and unhealthy complexion 23.

Personality

Shaohe begins as an oppressed but alert prisoner whose rage toward Black Prison and the Wusheng Sect is tempered by Chen Jichuan’s guidance. He wants revenge, but is not reckless enough to insist on personally taking every risk; when Chen Jichuan kills Wusheng Sect enemies, Shaohe considers the vengeance shared 3 69.

He is practical about survival. Before moving to Coiling Dragon Mountain, he refuses to become a burden or vulnerability to Chen Jichuan, choosing to remain in Great Chu until he can travel safely 142. He similarly uses Iron Lotus Seeds only after effort fails to overcome a genuine bottleneck, comparing them to answer keys rather than substitutes for understanding 212.

His early childlike enthusiasm survives in his fascination with snow, sabers, jujubes, and herb experiments 23 39. Over time, that enthusiasm becomes disciplined curiosity: he devotes himself to medicinal cultivation and alchemy, remains patient through failed experiments, and prefers stable research to dangerous fighting 95 212.
