The Higher the Sky, the Greater the Ambition
Why did William go to Rhine City to get a head?
Of course, it's about proving his strength and his determination to target the Steel Duchy.
That assassination, which is almost universally known, was a testament to their loyalty and the foundation upon which William was able to cooperate with Nadrick.
The Steel Duchy has been creating trouble on the border and building tensions that suggest an impending attack, but this is all intentional on their part. They are far more eager to buy time than the Blackrock Duchy.
Because Goethe Nassis also wanted to deal with the remaining Grand Nobles, and even more so, he planned to win over the Chosen Ones to serve them.
While it may seem that delaying the situation benefits both sides, the longer the Steel Duchy is delayed, the more stable its domestic situation will become, and the stronger the Steel Duchy will be with its majority of troops. However, if Black Rock sacrifices some losses and launches a preemptive strike, the results will often be better.
Nadrick certainly knew some of the Steel Duchy, but he lacked the courage to act decisively; he wanted to resolve the issue of the throne through more peaceful means.
Now that William, an outsider, has revealed the secret, he naturally understands that time is of the essence. If he can decisively send troops, many unexpected things might happen.
For example, would those resentful Nobles of the Steel Duchy have the courage to rebel?
Inside the black Royal Palace.
Nadrick looked at the sand table and a smile gradually crept onto his face, "If we really take over the Steel Duchy, why would the Dawn City Lord think I'd give him a third of the spoils?"
Raekton said in a deep voice, "Given the large number of Chosen Ones and his own status, he certainly won't demand land as a Neutral Lord."
"Do you think that even if 50,000 Chosen Ones appeared on the battlefield at the same time, they could destroy an Legion?"
Raekton reiterated, "No, those Chosen Ones are a disorganized mess, no match for the Legion."
Even if they die and are resurrected, I've been watching them. Some of them, after dying for a while, lost the will to fight and their strength diminished considerably, which shows they were cowardly.
"So you think Marquis Chris would really obey him?"
Raekton, then said, "No, it's just that, faced with the prevailing circumstances, Marquis Chris must pledge his complete loyalty to you."
Nadrick, clad in a black robe, laughed, a truly delightful laugh, "A Half-Elf with tainted blood? Why should I share the spoils with him? I'll leave the spoils right here on this land; does he dare to lead his army to steal them?"
"Your Majesty is wise." Raekton knelt on one knee, his eyes filled with nothing but admiration.
William had no idea what Nadrick was thinking, nor did he care whether Naderrick would abide by the agreement.
He had now arrived at the residence of an Count.
A young man dressed in a magnificent black robe was serving him tea and wine.
William took a sip of Fruit Wine and laughed heartily, "Kuri, you're Count, it's very embarrassing for your servants to see you doing this."
Kuri glanced at the scantily clad female slaves, waved them away, and smiled indifferently, "My respect for you, my lord, is like that of a mortal before Deity, far beyond what can be expressed by serving tea and wine. I hope you understand, my Lord."
"Kuri!"
"Yes." Kuri saw that William's tone was serious, so he immediately stood up, came to his side, and listened attentively.
William toyed with the wine glass, then suddenly said, "Is being Count all you ever wanted in your life?"
"Gulp"
Kuri swallowed hard, his expression excited, and said, "I also want to be Marquis..."
"Just Marquis?" William sighed in disappointment and got up to leave.
"My lord!" Kuri suddenly knelt on one knee before William, clenched his fist, and whispered, "I have 1,000 soldiers under my command, and they are not particularly strong. I know how much strength one must possess before having ambitions of equal measure."
At this point, Kuri looked at William with shining eyes and continued, "But I believe in you, sir. If you support me, I can stand higher and see further. I also believe that you want more than just me to be a Marquis."
William sat back down in his chair, a playful look on his face, and said, "So what do you think I want you to do?"
"My master wants me to be his dog. If he wants me to be Marquis, I'll be Marquis; if he wants me to be a duke, I'll be a duke. But no matter what, I'm still my master's dog." Kuri lay prostrate on the ground, his eyes filled with a lust for power.
Unless you're a true Grand Nobles, you'll never know how exhilarating it feels to have power!
That's right.
It's so awesome!
This is a very simple character.
But it can express everything more clearly.
You can imagine the most beautiful woman in the territory, this Goddess in the eyes of others, climbing into your bed in the middle of the night and doing everything she can to please you.
You can call a deer a horse, and everyone below your rank will flatter you, saying you're right and that the deer is indeed a horse.
You can do whatever you want; you are the king of this territory.
The premise is that these rights are only valid within one's own territory.
Kuri wants more power!
William smiled too, a smile almost identical to Nadrick's. He lifted Kuri's chin with his toe, looked into his lustful eyes, and chuckled, "Remember, if you're a dog, you have to understand that even if you become the future King, you'll still be my dog, just a dog whose power is usurped."
However, becoming King is still a bit difficult, but you can at least become the most powerful person second only to the King."
Kuri was almost trembling as he lay on the ground, kissing William's shoes repeatedly, almost as if he were intently licking all the dust off them.
William kicked him away, raising an eyebrow. "Tell Marquis Chris I want to see him in the King City tomorrow night, and only him."
"Understood, I'll get right on it." Kuri crawled backward until he reached the door before standing up and leaving.
Even after leaving this door, he would still be Nobles, unattainable by Commoners.
Kuri discovered William's ambition from the very first trade with William.
In the following year, William's ambition, like that Dawn City, expanded rapidly, grew stronger, and even rivaled the two Human Duchy.
Kuri understands one thing very well.
This Half-Elf Prince not only has the support of the Elven Royal Family, but also harbors ambitions befitting humankind.
At the very least, Kuri believes that if he bets right, he could truly become a marquis, second only to the Marquis, and even have a slight chance of becoming King.
Kuri also understood deeply that if he didn't change, his reign as Count was over, and climbing any higher would be as difficult as ascending to heaven.
But he has ambition, the ambition to keep climbing!
That power!
How fascinating is this?
Only by seizing power can one truly savor the wonderful taste of having it.
This is also the key reason why many people in power, even when they are old and about to die, do not want to give up their power.
"Judging from the master's step-by-step plan, it seems that he wants to instigate a war, to make the two countries fight, so as to profit from it. But what means does the master intend to use to make both Duchy fall into his hands?" Kuri couldn't figure it out.
He knew this wasn't something he should be thinking about; his abilities were quite ordinary. So, like a dog, he tried every possible way to coax Marquis Chris over.
William watched Kuri leave, a slight smile playing on his lips.
The Nobles system wasn't ideal, but he liked it very much and never intended to overthrow Nobles.
"Now that I've become an NPC, I need to understand one thing: I only have one life!"
William stood up, narrowing his eyes. "To control one's own Destiny, one must first become a master of power and authority."
He clenched his fist, the power within capable of destroying an ordinary wall. He shook his head. "Not enough. Power and strength are far from sufficient. Without even the ability to breach a city wall, what are we worth in this world?"
"I want more than just that..." William walked outside and looked up at the sky. No one knew just how big his ambitions were.
Maybe,
How high is the sky...?
How big is your ambition?
Maybe.
It's far more complicated than that.
