Kuri's older brother, Darius, was an Intermediate Knight Professional—and the target of this mission.
Today, he had led five Intermediate-Class Professionals as guards, along with twenty Novice-Class Professional attendants, to hunt fifteen li directly west of Border Town.
William held the yellowed slip of paper over the flames and set it alight. The mission information appeared with it.
[A new mission has been triggered.] [Assassinate Viscount Darius] [Mission Level: C] [Mission Details: Eliminate the target and his attendants. Do not leave behind a single person capable of speaking.] [Mission Reward: 20,000 EXP] [Mission Failure: Someone escapes]
"The target is already an Intermediate-Class Professional, yet it's only a C-rank mission. The experience really is pitiful!" William frowned, but what interested him was not the mission reward—it was the slaves Kuri had promised him.
The town's expansion required a great deal of manpower. In an age without electricity or machinery, human labor could practically be called the most valuable resource.
Otherwise, the human nations would not have restricted the slave trade flowing out of their borders.
Unless Moxis, that Archmage, was willing to personally take action and use the surging magic power in his belly to help him build the town.
Going by that All-Element Archmage's usual style, he alone could build faster than a hundred thousand slaves...
"Since it's an assassination, it won't be convenient to bring too many people..." William pondered slightly, then pushed open the door and shouted, "Nock, gather a hundred Rangers. Have them gear up. We're going to make trouble."
"Yes, my lord." Nock darted off.
There was no doubting the Elves' loyalty. Forget taking them to kill people—even robbery would be fine. Otherwise, why would they be called royal guards?
They could fight with their backs to the wall and die without taking a single step back!
They could happily do good deeds together, and they could throw their arms around each other's shoulders while doing bad deeds together. That was what royal guards were!
As for whether this would affect their values or outlook on life...
"They'll get used to it. Besides, they all know I'm a Half-Elf with plenty of flaws." William stretched lazily. He already wore his inner armor, then put on a casual set of blue leather armor, picked up the Dawn Set, and prepared to depart.
"Young master, this is the place." An Intermediate Ranger pointed toward the area nearby. "According to the information from those Rangers, this should be where that Mutant Black Wolf appears."
"Hopefully, it's a Mid-Tier Monster. Otherwise, this year's spring hunt won't be very interesting!" Darius narrowed his eyes slightly.
Someone chuckled and said with a servile bow, "Why not get some Novice-Class slave professionals to run around first, then let my lord begin the hunt?"
Darius clapped lightly. "Haha, good idea. But first, let's see how fierce that Lightning Wolf is. It actually defeated an entire Ranger squad by itself!"
"Haha, that squad was just trash!"
"With the young master taking the field, he alone is worth ten Ranger squads!"
Darius laughed a few times, then suddenly turned stern and snorted. "Enough nonsense. Keep moving. Open your eyes wide. If you let that Mutant Black Wolf get away, you can go be the prey instead."
"Yes, my lord." Aside from the four intermediate-class professional guards, everyone else shuddered. The viscount before them was a real pervert...
Or rather...
Most human nobles had inherited certain perverse traits.
Kuri looked at the ten people before him. There were eight Novice-Class Professionals and two who had only recently entered the intermediate class. They were all subordinates he had secretly cultivated.
With a grave expression, he said, "Brothers, whether I can inherit the count's title depends on you."
"There are over twenty of them. How are we supposed to block them? Why not call more people? This is obviously suicide." One Warrior said impatiently.
"I never said we would do it ourselves. When the time comes, someone will help us deal with the target. We only need to stay here and prevent anyone from escaping." Kuri gently shook his head. When he looked at the man who had spoken, a faint cold gleam flashed in his eyes.
Lotner looked at the assembled group. He had thought they were going hunting for monsters again, or clearing out small tribes near the territory. Only now did he learn that they were going to carry out an assassination...
"My lord, do you perhaps misunderstand the word 'assassination'?" Lotner felt a little melancholy.
William shrugged in confusion. "Is there any difference between one person carrying out an assassination, two people carrying out an assassination, and a hundred people carrying out an assassination?"
"Uh... wouldn't that make too much noise?"
"Too much noise? Don't use battle qi and shout in the dense forest. You could scream your throat raw, and no one three hundred meters away would come save you!"
"Why would I scream my throat raw? My throat is perfectly fine."
"..." William raised a brow. I've never tried it. How would I know whether your throat is fine or not?
More than a hundred people did not ride horses. When Elves marched through the forest, walking was often faster than riding.
Since everyone on this trip was a Ranger, they were even faster. No one wore armor; they were all dressed in leather. Whether walking on the ground or climbing through the trees, they could hardly make a sound. Coupled with the Elves' high agility, they consumed very little stamina.
Near noon.
The sun overhead was large and round, yet only a few rays could pierce through the thick leaves and shine upon the dead leaves covering the ground.
The entire group split apart into teams of ten. They could serve as scouts while also being ready to fight at any time.
William had made the objective of this trip very clear: they were going to kill people.
The Elven Royal Guards had been surprised, but after he gave them a brief explanation—that Darius was a perverted human noble who tortured and killed monsters and animals—they firmly decided to take him out...
As for whether Darius truly was one?
That did not matter at all. Once William called him a "perverted human noble," the Elves would recall their painful past. They never showed mercy to such human nobles. If there were ten thousand, they would kill ten thousand. Whatever perverse methods they could use, they would not hold back. Everyone would take turns...
Time passed.
William did not know whether he had stepped in dog shit or plucked a leg hair from the Goddess of Fortune, but he actually encountered Darius's group first.
"Do we make our move now?" Lotner, William, and Nock were all hidden in the trees.
The corners of William's lips curled up slightly. "No. Nock, notify the others to surround them. Let that Intermediate Lightning Wolf wear them down first."
He watched as Darius yelled and ordered the professionals surrounding the Lightning Wolf not to damage its fur.
But because of that, three professionals had already had their throats bitten through by the Lightning Wolf.
Several others had large patches of skin charred black and smoking. It was obvious they had been badly shocked.
The black wolf bared its bloodstained fangs, sparks crackling from its mouth as though it might spit out a bolt of lightning at any moment. The Lightning Wolf's bloodline potential was admittedly ordinary, but both its appearance and fur were exceptionally beautiful.
Back then, many players had liked to capture Lightning Wolf cubs as pets.
An adult Lightning Wolf, if its loyalty was high enough, was absolutely an incredibly powerful companion. It was fast, and its fangs were formidable in close combat. Its only weakness was that compared to other monsters, its health was pathetic. One kick to the waist was practically a critical hit...
Darius's expression was cold. Watching the Lightning Wolf kill his men one after another had already made him impatient. Just as he raised his bow—
One of the royal guards beside him placed a hand on his shoulder and quietly said without changing expression, "Someone is here. They haven't made a sound or revealed any killing intent, but I can feel it."
"Heh, an assassin sent by my dear little brother? I knew he wouldn't be so obedient." Darius sneered and fired an arrow. The Lightning Wolf, which had long since lost its ability to fight, had its head pierced through. Blood sprayed through the air.
He walked over to his prey and swept his gaze around without concern. "Come out. As an assassin, I admire your ability to conceal yourself. How about you kill my brother instead? I'll pay you double. What do you say?"
Silence.
"What are you afraid of? I may have many men under me, but they will not attack you. I said I would pay double to have my brother killed!" Darius shouted again.
William suddenly poked his head out from behind a tree and asked curiously, "Really?"
Darius narrowed his eyes. "Oh? An Elf, or a Half-Elf? Little fellow, don't be afraid. As a noble viscount, I, Darius, never throw my weight around to bully people!"
"Oh. Come out, everyone. Don't be afraid. This piece of trash won't throw his weight around to bully people." William clapped his hands.
Rustle, rustle, rustle.
A hundred fully armed Elven Rangers emerged from behind the trees.
Darius's ass clenched tightly, and sorrow filled his balls.
Four Intermediate-Class Professionals...
The rest were mere extras...
