Ch. 21Don't Move
- Plot and events: Chi Li regains consciousness in a vast glasshouse after being severely injured and abandoned near the shore. He learns that he was rescued by Bai Qi, the former Emperor’s mysterious lover and a highly skilled healer. Bai Qi’s attendants treat Chi Li’s wounds, while Bai Qi offers him a safe place to recover but refuses to ask about the circumstances behind his injuries. Chi Li remains suspicious, especially because Bai Qi’s discovery of him seems too coincidental and because he senses that he has forgotten something important from the night he was wounded.
Over several days, Chi Li observes that Bai Qi is deeply admired by everyone around him and appears genuinely kind, though he is frail and suffers from a persistent illness. Bai Qi repeatedly insists that he only saved Chi Li by chance and does not want to become involved in Chi Li’s troubles. Chi Li delays contacting Si Jinyan while determining whether Bai Qi knows his identity or the truth about the recent incident. He eventually concludes that remaining in the Empire is unsafe. - Character development: Chi Li remains cautious and distrustful, but Bai Qi’s gentleness temporarily disarms him and makes him lower his usual vigilance. His unexplained sense of lost memory and suspicion of Bai Qi keep him alert despite the sanctuary’s peaceful appearance. Bai Qi is established as compassionate, private, medically skilled, and physically unwell. His reluctance to discuss his past or Chi Li’s injuries suggests deliberate emotional and political distance. The attendants’ devotion reinforces Bai Qi’s reputation as a benevolent master.
- Character interactions: Bai Qi treats Chi Li with warmth and respect, telling him he may leave whenever he wishes and avoiding questions about his past. Chi Li thanks him but carefully limits what he reveals, questioning the attendant instead. Bai Qi and Chi Li share a brief conversation in the greenhouse, where Bai Qi compares fragile human life to the easier vitality of plants, hinting at his awareness of mortality. The attendants portray Bai Qi as generous and harmless, while Chi Li continues to question whether that image is complete.
- Ending and relationship tension: Si Jinyan arrives unexpectedly while Chi Li is recovering outside. His appearance is terrifying: restrained pheromones, strange veinlike markings, and metallic eyes make him seem almost beastlike. Chi Li instinctively tries to escape his grip, but Si Jinyan forcefully restrains him and orders, “Don’t move!” He then tears open Chi Li’s robe, ending the chapter on a moment of intense fear, urgency, and unresolved tension between them.
