Background / History
Lin Zhiqiang is a Shandong native who studied in Moscow, later started a family in Jiangnan, and was eventually transferred to Jiazhou. His parents had already died by the time he settled there, leaving his childhood memories of hometown hand-pulled noodles especially meaningful to him 6.
He was transferred to the Jiazhou Textile Factory two years before meeting Zhou Yan. As deputy director responsible for production technology, he helped improve the factory’s output and profits and earned considerable prestige among its workers 5. His technical work is later submitted for a Ministry of Light Industry technical award, though he credits the factory’s wider technical staff rather than claiming the achievement for himself 23.
Lin first meets Zhou Yan after Zhou rescues his niece, Xia Yao, from the dangerous waters of Bailatuo. Deeply grateful, Lin publicly thanks Zhou, gifts him a new Twenty-Eight Bicycle, and submits his name for recognition as a model of “spiritual civilization” 4 5.
Appearance
Lin is a tall, broad-shouldered middle-aged man with a square face, black-rimmed glasses, and meticulously combed hair. He dresses neatly and projects the air of an educated professional 4.
- Often wears a dark gray Zhongshan suit over a white Dacron shirt 4.
- Carries a fountain pen in his breast pocket and wears a Shanghai Brand Watch 4.
- Uses a black briefcase for work and, on one occasion, carries treasured East Lake Vinegar in it 21.
Personality
Lin is grateful, principled, and generous. He regards Zhou Yan’s rescue of Xia Yao as a life-saving debt rather than a minor favor, insisting that the bicycle gift should encourage others to perform good deeds 5. He continues to support Zhou long after the rescue, even when he has no obligation to do so.
He is approachable despite his position. Factory workers respect him because he does not act like an aloof leader, and he is willing to publicly endorse food he genuinely enjoys 21. He also has a playful, warm side, particularly when discussing Zhou Yan’s possible future relationship with Xia Yao 46.

Story Role / Major Arcs
Rewarding Xia Yao’s Rescuer
Lin publicly identifies Zhou Yan as Xia Yao’s rescuer, gives him a Twenty-Eight Bicycle, and submits his name for official moral recognition. He then helps turn Zhou’s first successful noodle service into a public event by dining at the restaurant 5 6.
Helping Xia Yao Recover
After learning that Xia Yao cannot eat following her near-drowning, Lin takes Zhou Yan’s Braised Pork Rib Noodles home. Xia Yao finishes the serving, regains her appetite, and decides to visit the restaurant herself 7.
Championing Qiaojiao Beef
While suffering from a chill, Lin tries Zhou Yan’s new Qiaojiao Beef and publicly declares its sixty-cent price worthwhile. His approval helps overcome customers’ hesitation over the dish and establishes him as one of the restaurant’s most effective promoters 21 22.
Supporting Branding and Expansion
Lin arranges the Textile Factory’s study visit with Sichuan Fine Arts Academy, promotes Zhou’s restaurant to the visiting group, and backs the decision to dine there instead of at the Factory Canteen.
