Decline and the Transigen children

By the time of the Transigen escape, Charles was an elderly man suffering from Alzheimer’s, epilepsy, and severe physical decline. During a rare lucid period in the water tower, he sensed Laura before meeting her and was startled by Miles’s unconscious telepathic self-defense, which prevented Charles from noticing him normally. 2

Charles approached Laura and Miles with patience rather than invading their minds. After learning of Gabriela’s death and the children’s persecution, he declared them family and telepathically compelled Logan to return for them rather than abandon them to the Reavers. 2
