The wind on Vormir howled fiercely.
Ahead stood a mountain. At its summit was an altar made of piled stones, crude and simple.
Beside the altar stood a figure in a black robe, their face hidden beneath the hood.
Chu Hang walked up the mountain.
The snow grew thicker, and each step sank halfway down his foot.
The robed figure did not move. It simply stood there like a statue.
Chu Hang reached the altar and stopped.
The robed figure raised its head.
A red face emerged from beneath the hood. It had no nose, deep-set eye sockets, and the outline of a skull, though it was still covered in skin.
Chu Hang recognized him.
Red Skull—Schmidt.
The Hydra leader who had been teleported here by the Cosmic Cube seventy years ago.
"Welcome," Red Skull said, his voice hollow. "Seeker of the Soul Stone."
Chu Hang did not respond.
He looked at the altar. There was a depression in its center, empty of anything. Yet he could sense that something was there—a vast force of law concerning the essence of the soul.
"You know who I am," Chu Hang said.
"I know everyone who comes here," Red Skull said. "Their names, their pasts, their desires. The Cosmic Cube trapped me here and made me the guide to the Soul Stone. This is my curse, and also my duty."
Chu Hang stared at him.
"Do you know me?"
Red Skull fell silent for several seconds.
His red face turned toward Chu Hang, the darkness in his eye sockets as deep as two holes.
"You are special," Red Skull said slowly. "I cannot see your past. You are like a mass of mist drifting through the river of time, without roots or a source."
Chu Hang clenched his fists.
