Background

Bifulong originates from Teyvat as a Demon God associated with fungi. Before becoming Lan Yu’s spirit, he relied heavily on delicious mushroom avatars to gain worship, only for humans to consume them so extensively that his faith and power collapsed. Lan Yu later criticizes him for neglecting the more fundamental mycelium network that mushrooms require to spread and survive 1.

He manifests during Lan Yu’s spirit-awakening ceremony as an unfamiliar mushroom spirit. Initially sleeping and arrogant upon waking, Bifulong calls Lan Yu his follower and proposes rebuilding his strength by spreading mushroom avatars. Lan Yu rejects this hierarchy, establishes himself as the planner, and assigns Bifulong the role of supplying power and carrying out his strategies 1.

Under Lan Yu’s direction, Bifulong begins expanding the Mycelium Network, creating mushroom avatars, and building a faith centered on feeding the hungry. Remote villagers who eat his mushrooms become spiritually connected to him and learn mushroom cultivation in return. This practical relief from hunger becomes the foundation of his growing religion and restored power 5.

As the network expands, Bifulong accepts powerful humans and Spirit Beasts as believers, including Zhu Zhuqing, Zhu Zhuyun, Ning Rongrong, Dugu Bo, Daming, and Erming. His faith gradually develops from scattered survival communities into an organized force with priests, academies, transformed Spirit Beasts, and continent-spanning influence 6 17 25 27 56.

His religion later spreads to the Sun Moon Continent through Lan Yu and the subdued Evil Emperor. Its emphasis on food makes it readily appealing to the local population. Meanwhile, Bifulong extends his influence into the Divine Realm before its gods recognize the intrusion 96 97 108.

After Lan Yu defeats the gods opposing him, the Sea God’s people and Spirit Hall formally acknowledge the Sage Lord of Fungi as supreme. Emperor Xue Ye likewise declares him the Heaven Dou Empire’s guardian deity. Lan Yu subsequently tells the Life God King not to obstruct the spread of their faith across other planes 120 122.

Appearance

Bifulong commonly appears as an unusual mushroom spirit or mushroom-like companion. His physical manifestation changes with his power and environment.

  • Initially appears as a sleeping mushroom in Lan Yu’s palm, complete with a visible snot bubble 1.
  • Can manifest a voice and consciousness to connected believers without being physically present.
  • Appears in Illusion Space as an immense, imposing mushroom-like deity; after recovering power through the Ice and Fire Dual Yii Well, he becomes larger than Zamalan 27.
  • His innumerable mushroom avatars can become sentient Fungus Beasts linked to his consciousness 4.
  • Descends in his true form during the confrontation with Wan Demon King and physically subdues him by bouncing on him 57.
  • His appearance is used as the model for a statue commissioned through Dugu Bo; observers describe the statue as a giant mushroom 49 72.
  • Appears on the screens of Lan Yu’s livestream when addressing the Five Great God Kings 113.

Personality

Bifulong is boastful, childish, and intensely concerned with being recognized as a Demon God rather than “just a mushroom.” He repeatedly corrects followers who call him the “God of Fungi,” insisting on the title “Sage Lord of Fungi” instead 3 6.

Despite his grand claims, he is forgetful and impractical. Lan Yu considers him dangerously lacking in judgment, particularly because Bifulong failed to understand basic fungal reproduction and made his mushroom avatars excessively appealing to eat 1. He eventually accepts Lan Yu’s leadership because Lan Yu is better suited to planning, restraint, and social strategy.

His understanding of compassion is simplistic: he equates “love” with ensuring that people have mushrooms to eat. Although this outlook initially contributed to the collapse of his previous faith, it also becomes the core of his new doctrine: ensuring that ordinary people can eat their fill 6 31.

He is also fiercely protective of his followers. Attacking believers can provoke both the network’s defensive response and deliberate punishment: Wan Demon King suffers backlash from a mental attack against connected believers, while killers attempting to steal Fungus Spirit Spirits are punished by Dugu Bo under the Sage Lord’s orders 57 77.

His generosity is not unconditional. He recognizes sincere worshippers but withholds Fungus Spirit Spirits from those with corrupt intentions or insincere faith. Lan Yu explicitly warns prospective followers that betrayal can bring divine punishment upon an entire clan 70 86.

Abilities & Skills

Mycelium Network

Bifulong spreads underground mycelium that serves as the foundation of his growth, influence, and power distribution.

  • Absorbs and gathers ambient spirit power, which can be fed back to Lan Yu for passive cultivation 1.
  • Supports the growth, movement, and reappearance of mushroom avatars across connected territory.
  • Links believers, mushrooms, Fungus Beasts, plants, and Spirit Beasts into a broad spiritual network 5 17.
  • Allows Bifulong’s consciousness to travel through regions reached by the network 46.
  • Can become invasive when left unchecked; its spread through the Star Dou Great Forest eventually alarms Xiao Wu, Daming, and Erming 56.
  • Decomposes chaotic elemental energy left by the Silver Dragon King’s attacks and uses it as nourishment, rapidly replacing destroyed trees around the Lake of Life with tall mushrooms 60.
  • Spreads through the Star Dou Great Forest as intelligent Spirit Beasts come under Lan Yu’s management; together with their organization, this makes Spirit Beasts over ten thousand years old much harder for Soul Masters to hunt. The Sunset Forest has already undergone a similar change 62.
  • Extends beyond the mortal continents, establishing a hidden foothold in the Divine Realm 108.

Mushroom Avatars and Fungus Beasts

Bifulong can create mushrooms that act as extensions of his own consciousness.

  • Red and green mushroom avatars can transform into sentient Fungus Beasts 4.
  • Their consciousness is symbiotically connected to Bifulong; they cannot truly be killed unless Bifulong himself is destroyed 4.
  • Early avatars possess only the equivalent of one year of Spirit Beast cultivation, but can be strengthened by concentrating the network’s collected spirit power into a single body 4.
  • Fungus Beasts can serve as scouts, messengers, combatants, and caretakers of infected territory.
  • The Mycelium Network’s distributed power could theoretically summon a legion of hundred-thousand-year-level Jadeplume Terrorshrooms if concentrated 20.
  • Concentrating the network’s power raises Xiao Lu to the hundred-thousand-year level, allowing her to sacrifice herself to provide Lan Yu’s first Soul Ring and Left Arm Bone; her consciousness enters dormancy rather than being destroyed 5.
  • Lan Yu later uses repeated Jadeplume Terrorshroom summons and Fungus Beast Berserk to overwhelm the Evil Emperor, demonstrating the fungal system’s ability to subdue a powerful Spirit Beast beyond Douluo Continent 96.

Illusion Space

Bifulong draws those who consume his mushrooms into a spiritual realm where he reveals himself and accepts their faith.

  • Uses the space to establish direct contact with prospective believers, including Xiao Wu, the Zhu sisters, Ning Rongrong, Daming, Erming, Su Qingluo, and Dugu Bo 3 6 14 17 25 27.
  • Presents Lan Yu as his Sage and spokesperson, directing believers to Lan Yu for practical assistance and blessings 14.
  • Becomes larger and more magnificent as Bifulong recovers power 27.
  • Usually introduces prospective believers to the space after they consume a Green Mushroom; other mushrooms can also establish access, as Dugu Bo is drawn inside after consuming a Detoxifying Mushroom 14 25 27.
  • Can reach a person through dreams once sufficient mushroom consumption establishes a clear connection, as demonstrated with Xiao Wu 3.
  • Recruits Lina through a Green Mushroom grown inside her auction-house cage, promising escape and directing her to Lan Yu 32.
  • Draws the defeated Evil Emperor into the space and explicitly declares that Lan Yu’s words represent his will 96.

Blessings and Faith

Bifulong’s power increases through worship, while his followers receive tangible benefits through his mushrooms and Lan Yu’s interventions.

  • Mushrooms can relieve hunger and teach believers how to cultivate a renewable food supply 5.
  • Certain mushrooms permanently enhance physical strength and endurance 2 7.
  • Faith grants access to Bifulong’s protection, spiritual connection, and opportunities for Martial Soul or body enhancement 14 25.
  • His blessings are conditional on loyalty; Bifulong explicitly threatens betrayers with divine punishment 27.
  • The faith’s stated principle is “having enough to eat,” making it especially attractive to impoverished commoners 31 55.
  • Personally descends upon the statue erected by Dugu Bo and grants Fungus Spirit Spirits to believing Soul Masters; corrupt intentions and insincere worship prevent recipients from gaining his recognition 70.
  • Fungus Spirit Spirits return to his Spiritual Network when their hosts are killed, preventing attackers from stealing them 77.
  • Followers describe food, survival, and respectful treatment as the religion’s basic promises. Lan Yu adds that those who prevent believers from eating their fill will be turned into fertilizer 85.
  • Green Mushrooms tolerate extremely intense cooking flames without simply burning away; Huo Wu’s flames instead bring out their fragrance 37.

Fungal Transformation and Symbiosis

Bifulong can establish symbiotic relationships between fungi and other living beings.

  • His mycelium can infect Immortal Herbs at the Ice and Fire Dual Yii Well while preserving their original properties 26.
  • The affected herbs become subjects of the Sage Lord and can be turned into mobile Fungus Beasts through Lan Yu’s Fungification ability 26.
  • His network supports the creation of Fungus Spirit Spirits, which can grant elemental traits and condense Soul Rings for compatible users within network range 33.
  • He assists in converting Spirit Beasts, plants, and Martial Souls into fungal symbiotic forms under Lan Yu’s direction 27 52.
  • Soul Ring condensation through Fungus Spirit Spirits consumes the network’s stored Soul Power and is limited by the recipient’s physical condition and access to network coverage 33.
  • His strengthening of Lina’s body enables Lan Yu to open her meridians and raise her from having no Soul Power to becoming a Soul Master with a ten-thousand-year first Soul Ring 33.
  • The fungal threads implanted in the Silver Dragon King decompose lingering Asura God Power, removing the force that has prevented her injuries from healing 61.

Spiritual Network and Soul Protection

The believers’ mental connections form a Spiritual Network that provides communication, collective defense, and oversight.

  • Mental attacks against connected believers can amount to attacking the entire network. Wan Demon King suffers backlash when he attempts such an attack against Xiao Wu, Daming, and Erming 57.
  • Every follower’s mind is part of the network. Attempts by nobles to recruit or corrupt followers fail because disloyal intentions cannot remain isolated from the faith’s collective oversight 70.
  • Believers can upload information for Lan Yu to receive quickly. The sheer volume means he does not review every minor report, but he notices the Speed Clan’s request and responds through Mycelial Mimicry 85.
  • Protects the souls of Lan Yu, Ning Rongrong, Zhu Zhuqing, and Xiao Wu from the Love God’s trials when they enter Qiankun Asking Love Valley 98.
  • Enables Bifulong to find and repair Ah Yin’s incomplete soul, after which Lan Yu summons her as a humanoid Fungus Beast 46.

True-Form Combat and Renewal

Bifulong can intervene directly rather than acting only through believers and avatars.

  • Descends in his true form and subdues Wan Demon King by repeatedly bouncing on him after the Fierce Beast attacks his followers 57.
  • States early on that restoring the dead may be possible if their souls have not completely vanished. Lan Yu later restores Ah Rou from a remnant soul, fulfilling the hope first offered to Xiao Wu 4 62.
  • Frees and revives the Golden Dragon King in the form of a baby dragon. Lan Yu explains that Bifulong erases the dragon’s resentment and grants him a new life as an underling 125.

Relationships

  • Lan Yu — His Sage, spokesperson, bonded spirit master, and chief strategist. Bifulong supplies power and divine legitimacy, while Lan Yu manages planning, expansion, and practical execution 1 14. Bifulong later tells the Evil Emperor that Lan Yu’s words are his will 96.
  • Xiao Wu — One of Bifulong’s earliest believers. He warns her about Tang San and Tang Hao, offers eventual protection, and gives her hope that A Rou may be restored 3 4. Her prayer during Wan Demon King’s attack precedes Lan Yu and Bifulong’s intervention; Lan Yu later reunites her with the restored Ah Rou and grants her a Fire Element Fungus Beast Spirit 57 62.

  • Qian Renxue and Spirit Hall — Qian Renxue formally submits after the divine battle and declares that all of Spirit Hall will honor the Sage Lord of Fungi as supreme 120.
  • Emperor Xue Ye — Initially promises help propagating the faith if Botanical Academy wins the tournament. Later orders the Heaven Dou Empire to worship the Sage Lord of Fungi openly and names him the empire’s guardian deity 38 120.
  • Five Great God Kings — Become aware of Bifulong’s challenge to their authority through Lan Yu’s livestream. Bifulong warns them against interference, while Lan Yu subsequently insists that they must not obstruct the faith’s spread across other planes 113 122.
  • Golden Dragon King / Little Gold — Freed and revived by Bifulong as a baby dragon with his resentment erased. Becomes the Sage Lord’s new underling and joins Lan Yu’s group before the confrontation with the Five Great God Kings 125.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Awakening and Early Network Development

Bifulong awakens as Lan Yu’s spirit and begins rebuilding from near-powerlessness. Lan Yu redirects him from indiscriminately creating edible avatars toward establishing an underground network that can gather spirit power and support long-term expansion 1.

Founding the Mushroom Faith

After Lan Yu acquires his first Soul Ring, Bifulong’s mushrooms spread through impoverished regions of the Heaven Dou Empire. Villagers gain food, learn mushroom cultivation, and become spiritually connected believers, restoring Bifulong’s strength through faith 5.

Recruitment of Followers

Bifulong begins accepting more influential believers through Illusion Space. The Zhu sisters become his first major human followers, followed by Ning Rongrong, Daming, Erming, Su Qingluo, Dugu Bo, and members of Botanical Academy 6 14 17 25 27.

He also recruits individuals in vulnerable circumstances, including Lina at the auction house and Ah Yin after repairing her incomplete soul. These followers become important demonstrations of the fungal system’s ability to transform bodies, restore souls, and create alternatives to conventional Soul Master cultivation 32 33 46.

Expansion Through Academies and Spirit Beasts

Bifulong’s faith becomes increasingly institutionalized through Botanical Academy, later renamed Sage Lord of Fungi Academy. His network also transforms Spirit Beasts, medicinal herbs, and Blue Silver Grass into extensions of the fungal system 25 26 52 56.

When Wan Demon King investigates the Star Dou Great Forest’s changes and attacks Xiao Wu, Daming, and Erming, Bifulong intervenes personally and subdues him. Lan Yu’s subsequent confrontation with the Silver Dragon King brings her and the intelligent Spirit Beasts under his management. The network’s expansion and the Fierce Beasts’ organization make high-age Spirit Beasts increasingly difficult for human hunters to locate 57 61 62.

Continental Religious Influence

The Sage Lord’s promise of food gives the faith broad appeal among commoners. With Star Luo imperial support and public information about Fungus Spirit Spirits, Bifulong’s influence becomes a direct challenge to the established Soul Master system and Spirit Hall’s authority 55 56.

The imperial support follows Lan Yu’s response to persecution of believers in Star Luo City. After Zhu Zhuyun’s plea reaches him, Lan Yu turns the Star Luo Emperor, Dai Weisi, and the Nether Duke into puppets, allowing her priestly work to continue with royal backing 52 54.

Several years later, Zhu Zhuyun’s force of blessed commoner Soul Masters deters hostile nobles. In Heaven Dou City, Bifulong distributes Fungus Spirit Spirits through Dugu Bo’s statue, attracting unaffiliated Soul Masters while rejecting insincere applicants. The Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect’s open support further limits the nobles’ ability to suppress the religion 70.

The faith also changes ordinary economic life. In Gengjin City, people who previously struggled to afford food become able to pursue blacksmithing, and applicants excluded by the Blacksmith Association form a separate Blacksmith Alliance. The Speed Clan likewise formally joins after many of its disciples have already become believers 85 86 90.

Expansion to the Sun Moon Continent

Lan Yu defeats the Evil Emperor and brings him before Bifulong in Illusion Space. Bifulong recognizes him as a follower and instructs him to obey Lan Yu, who assigns him to convert the continent’s Spirit Beasts. The Evil Emperor also offers access to his existing human worshippers 96.

The faith spreads readily because its promise addresses the universal need for food. Lan Yu praises the Evil Emperor’s progress and orders him to work toward unifying the continent, while the growing religious network accompanies Lan Yu’s advancement to the nine-ring Titled Douluo stage 97.

Divine Arena and Declaration of Supremacy

By the time Lan Yu prepares to confront the newly ascended gods, Bifulong has secretly established a foothold in the Divine Realm. During the Divine Arena gathering, Lan Yu broadcasts across Douluo Star, the Sun Moon Continent, and the Divine Realm, and Bifulong appears on the screens to warn the Five Great God Kings against interference 108 113.

After Lan Yu’s victories, Bo Saixi pledges the Sea God’s people to the Sage Lord of Fungi, and Qian Renxue submits on Spirit Hall’s behalf. Emperor Xue Ye responds by naming Bifulong the Heaven Dou Empire’s guardian deity and requiring open worship from his officials. Lan Yu closes the broadcast by announcing that he will soon visit the Divine Realm 120.

Confrontation with the Divine Realm

Lan Yu tells the Life God King that he does not seek the title of God Sovereign or God Emperor, but will not tolerate interference with the spread of his faith across the planes. He emphasizes that neither he nor Bifulong is good-tempered toward such obstruction 122.

Before the confrontation with the Five Great God Kings, Lan Yu reveals Bifulong’s newest underling: the Golden Dragon King, freed and revived as the baby dragon Little Gold. Bifulong’s erasure of the dragon’s resentment allows him to begin a new life, and Lan Yu encourages him to fight as the opposing groups prepare for battle 125.
