Background / History

Guga first appears during Lin Xiao's Martial Soul awakening. Rather than summoning a conventional Martial Soul, Lin Xiao manifests a chubby, penguin-suited creature—followed within seconds by 999 more. The 1,000 Gugas crowd the Seven Treasures Glazed Tile Sect's awakening hall, where their noise, horseplay, and strength overwhelm guards and attendees alike 1.

Though initially uncontrollable, the Gugas recognize Lin Xiao as their “Boss” and obey his direct commands. Their collective discipline becomes clear when they form ranks on command and expose Evil Fat Guga after she steals the Soul Power crystal 2. Lin Xiao subsequently learns that the Gugas possess specialized professions, ranging from cooking and construction to magic, medicine, theft, and alchemy 3 5.

The group becomes an increasingly important force within the Seven Treasures Glazed Tile Sect. They forge armor, construct vehicles, produce grenades through an assembly line, provide food and logistical support, and develop medicinal pills 7 16 17 24. Their work also gradually strengthens Lin Xiao's spirit rings, giving him a reason to pursue large-scale production with sect resources 16 21.

A squad of Thief Gugas later infiltrates Holy Soul Village, defeats and interrogates Tang San, enters the waterfall cave on the back mountain, and steals the Blue Silver Emperor's true-form body and its hundred-thousand-year right leg bone for Lin Xiao 18 19 20.

Appearance

Gugas resemble small, round-bodied figures in black-and-white penguin mascot suits. The first manifested Guga is approximately 1.2 meters tall and has short limbs, yellow flippers, and a girl's face visible through the penguin-beak hood 1.

As a group, the Gugas are intensely attached and loyal to Lin Xiao. They call him “Boss,” compete for his praise, sleep around him, and become distressed whenever they believe he has been hurt 6 13. Their devotion does not make them orderly: they bicker, fight over Lin Xiao's attention, abandon guilty members to avoid blame, and routinely cause public chaos 2 6.

Their thinking follows exaggerated comedic logic. Gugas can be highly competent specialists while making reckless decisions, such as installing an “emergency escape system” in an unstable tricycle, using a bargain cauldron that explodes during alchemy, or claiming a crude courtyard grave will improve five generations of descendants 15 25 26.
