There were still more than ten minutes before the first class of the afternoon, yet the classroom was already buzzing with noise. The middle and back rows had, as usual, been mostly claimed, and a crowd was "exchanging insights," diligently scribbling away before the teacher arrived to collect homework.
Only a sparse handful had chosen the front rows, where they were unsurprisingly treated to clouds of chalk dust and everyone's stares.

Wang Lei had been slouched in a chair in the very last row, scrolling through his phone, when his face suddenly darkened. He elbowed his roommate beside him.
"Hey, Old Wu, come take a look at this. It's kind of interesting."
Wu Shaoyou had nearly fallen asleep. After being nudged, he groggily yawned and leaned over. His adopted father casually shifted the phone toward him, then simply handed him one of his earbuds.
The footage was exceptionally steady. It seemed to have been filmed from about the height of a second floor, yet it was moving quite quickly, with occasional changes in angle and signs of zooming. It was most likely stitched together from drone footage.
The background showed a broad, long street. The high-rises and houses around it looked modern, but judging from the Japanese writing on the signs, road markers, and buildings, it was clearly not filmed domestically. It was somewhere in Japan.
But none of that mattered.
What mattered was that countless people were screaming and charging forward in panic. Crowds poured out from the buildings along the road, some barely dressed, rapidly merging into the torrent on the street. The camera kept moving with them!
