What did it mean for something to cover the hills as far as the eye could see?

Basim forgot all about dealing with the prisoners. When he realized that the seemingly harmless mist could even block his soul perception to some extent, he refused to believe it and pushed harder to "look" more closely.

And then he really saw them.

Within the mist, skeletons, zombies, and even ghosts crawling along the ground covered the hills as far as the eye could see. Packed together like ants in a nest, they filled the valley, swarmed over the slopes, and stretched to the edge of his vision, scattered across the rolling hills in the distance!

Unlike their mindless counterparts outside, these seemingly low-level undead wandering through the endless mist all had at least a faint spark of soul fire in their eyes. They looked like countless ghostly lanterns flickering through the fog!

It was terrifying!

As he realized how bad things were, the Arab, already concealed within the shadows, seemed to sense something else.

He gritted his teeth and burned even more soul power. Through his spiritual vision, he forced his gaze through the gray mist that thickened with distance, past the far-off gullies toward the hills and low mountains beyond!

More clusters of gargoyles blotted out the light overhead like dark clouds—

Ranks of Corpse Witches stood with staffs in hand beneath dim bone towers swathed in throngs of wraiths—

And Death Knights appeared in his vision too, mounted on bone-armored warhorses. Their silent formations stood as dense as a forest, as though they had ridden out of the depths of hell!

Beyond them, the wilderness rose into hills, and the hills into mountain ridges that rolled beneath the dense fog. Every ridge his gaze swept over sent a sharp stab
