Background / History
The Azure Cloud Sect was one of Great Li’s long-standing immortal-cultivation powers, occupying Azure Cloud Mountain and maintaining deep reserves of senior cultivators and ancient protections. Its public leadership appeared to be around the Eighth or Ninth Realm, while its forbidden grounds concealed patriarchs and old monsters of far greater cultivation 117.
The sect’s conduct toward mortals became the source of Su Yueli’s vendetta. An Azure Cloud Sect cultivator sold Shen Qing’an an ordinary piece of fluorite as a supposed jade slip capable of granting Su Yueli an Acquired Spirit Root. Shen spent his fortune on the fraud, was left crippled and impoverished, and died believing he had secured her path to immortality 9. A captured sect disciple later identified Jiang Ran—personal disciple of the Grand Elder—as the likely swindler 82 127.
Lu Feiyu, the sect’s Young Sect Master, was responsible for the massacre of Su Yueli’s home village and the murder of her parents. Though his rise was publicly celebrated as the result of a great opportunity, cultivators acknowledged that he had forcibly taken the opportunity after slaughtering the village’s inhabitants 124.
Before the Azure Cloud Calamity, the sect was expanding its influence through conflict with Great Wei. Rogue cultivators credited it with securing a disputed border Spirit Stone vein and reported that Great Wei’s Blood-Armored Guards had lost at least three commanders in the struggle 124.
Despite the similarity of their names, the Azure Cloud Sect appears to have no known historical connection to the Azure Cloud Ancient Kingdom. Su Yueli’s later investigation concluded that the shared name was likely coincidental 202.
Organization and Assets
- Azure Cloud Mountain — The sect’s mountain domain once contained extensive spirit peaks, grand halls, and a large surrounding territory, including one hundred and eight spirit peaks during its height. Its lands and infrastructure were drastically reduced after the Azure Cloud Calamity 124 138.
- Heaven-Origin Mountain-Suppressing Formation — Ancient mountain-protecting formation strengthened over many generations with heavenly treasures and Spirit Stones. It was powerful enough to threaten high-level cultivators, but Su Yueli tore through its barrier and destroyed its formation nodes with her bare hands 125 126.
- Mountain-River Immortal Suppression Seal — The sect’s supreme treasure, deployed by Lu Cangtian as a mountain-like divine weapon against Su Yueli. A peak eleventh-tier treasure, it carried dense gravity laws and accumulated Immortal Dao power. Her Martial Soul halted it, drained its laws and mana, and began severing Lu Cangtian’s connection to it 129 130.
- Immortal Mirror — An artifact used by the old ancestor during the Azure Cloud Calamity. It was cracked in the battle 138.
- Azure Sun Sword — Zhao Chengfeng’s natal divine weapon. Su Yueli shattered it by hand during the sect’s centennial ceremony 127 128.
- Azure Flying Vessel — A large flying vessel used to transport the sect’s delegation to the Great Li Imperial City’s Immortal Dao Tournament 93.
- Godlink Blood-Replenishing Pills — The sect supplied Su Yueli with three pills refined from the essence of Eighth Realm Desolate Demon Beasts through an auction resource exchange. She subsequently consumed them while sheltering in the Myriad Treasures Trading House to strengthen her body and pursue the Eleventh Realm of Martial Dao 69 72.
- Tracking Compass — Elder Han used a compass capable of registering the death of a pursued sect disciple during the hunt for Su Yueli 82.
- Back-Mountain Forbidden Cave Dwelling — The old ancestor’s protected retreat, where he recuperated after the calamity. He voluntarily opened its defensive restriction when Su Yueli returned 139.
- Disciple Hierarchy — The sect maintained outer disciples, ordinary and elite inner disciples, core disciples, and elders’ personal disciples. Its main peak housed inner elites and personal disciples, while Sixth- and Seventh-Realm elites guarded the mountain gate during Lu Feiyu’s ceremony 100 125 138.
- Enforcement Hall — An internal hall whose Grand Elder had a personal disciple on the rebuilt main peak 139.
- Sect Robes — Members wore black robes embroidered with dark-blue cloud patterns along the cuffs and collars, allowing Su Yueli to recognize their affiliation 66 75.
Power Progression
| Stage / Period | Institutional Strength and Development |
|---|---|
| Established major sect | Maintained a legacy of more than a thousand years, extensive mountain holdings, and concealed senior cultivators potentially reaching the Eleventh through Thirteenth Realms 117 124. |
| Auction and tournament period | Fielded Third- and Fourth-Realm disciples under Seventh Realm Elder Han and displayed the resources and elite talent of a major sect at the Imperial City tournament 67 80 93 94. |
| Height before the Azure Cloud Calamity | Controlled one hundred and eight spirit peaks and recently secured a disputed border Spirit Stone vein. Its revealed defenders included Tenth Realm Grand Elder Zhao Chengfeng, Eleventh Realm sect masters, and a peak eleventh-tier inherited treasure 124 127 128 129 130. |
| Azure Cloud Calamity | Lost its ancient protective formation, Grand Elder, and much of its leadership and infrastructure. Its hidden ancestor emerged with power touching the Thirteenth Realm but was severely injured, and the Immortal Mirror was damaged 125 126 128 130 132 134 138. |
| Century-long decline | Fell to second-rate status, lost more than half its territory, and retained only weak defenses and a crudely rebuilt main peak. The ancestor remained alive but had a shattered Dao Foundation 138 139. |
| Secret loss of the ancestor | The ancestor took his own life to settle Su Yueli’s vendetta. His death was concealed so that his reputation could continue deterring outsiders 140. |
| Later survival policy | The current sect master refrained from intervening against Su Yueli, remembering the ancestor’s warning that renewed provocation would destroy the sect 187. |
Known Members
- Lu Feiyu — Young Sect Master whose massacre of Su Yueli’s village initiated her century-long blood feud. He recalled leaving a twelve-year-old girl without a Spiritual Root to flee into the mountains, assuming she could not survive; that survivor was Su Yueli 124 126.
- Elder Han Fei — Seventh Realm elder who led the sect’s delegation at the Myriad Treasures Trading House and later pursued Su Yueli after she outbid the sect 67 71 80.
- Jiang Ran — Personal disciple and intended successor of Grand Elder Zhao Chengfeng; identified as the cultivator who deceived Shen Qing’an. He possessed an Immortal Bone, numerous protective treasures, and Mid-Fourth Realm cultivation before Su Yueli killed him. His defensive treasures included the Fifth Realm Profound Spirit Bell 82 99 127.
- Zhao Chengfeng — Grand Elder and Jiang Ran’s master. He sought revenge for Jiang Ran’s death and was killed by Su Yueli during the Azure Cloud Mountain ceremony. He had searched for her for a century before their confrontation 127 128.
- Lu Cangtian — Former Sect Master and Eleventh Realm cultivator who recognized Su Yueli’s Martial Dao Zenith during the Azure Cloud Calamity 128 129.
- Unnamed Then-Current Sect Master — Sect leader and Lu Feiyu’s father who fought beside Lu Cangtian during the Azure Cloud Calamity. A Mid-Eleventh Realm cultivator, he used spatial techniques and a Heaven-and-Earth Manifestation. His manifestation was destroyed by Su Yueli and Little Black, leaving him gravely crippled 129 130.
- Old Ancestor / Patriarch — Thirteenth Realm foundation of the sect who emerged from the forbidden grounds during the calamity. He survived severely injured, entered seclusion, and later took his own life at Su Yueli’s demand 132 138 140.
- Unnamed Enforcement Hall Grand Elder’s Disciple — A blue-robed personal disciple whom Su Yueli subdued and interrogated during her return. He revealed that the patriarch was recuperating in a forbidden cave dwelling on the back mountain; she left him unconscious rather than killing him 139.
- Unnamed Later Sect Master — The sect’s current leader during Su Yueli’s assault on the Azure Moon Sect. He considered seeking Zhao Xuankong’s protection but refrained from provoking her after recalling the old ancestor’s warning 187.
Conflict with Su Yueli
Fraud of Shen Qing’an
Shen Qing’an purchased the purported “immortal jade slip” from an Azure Cloud Sect cultivator after spending ten years and exhausting his family’s wealth. The object was worthless fluorite; it could not grant Su Yueli a Spirit Root or enable cultivation. Shen’s resulting poverty, broken legs, and death became one of the foundations of her hatred for the sect 9.
Su Yueli later confirmed through interrogation that Jiang Ran had cheated a mortal in Fengling City out of silver and family heirlooms using the same false promise of an Acquired Spirit Root 82.
Auction House Feud
At the Myriad Treasures Trading House auction, the Azure Cloud Sect sought the True Spirit Dharma Image Jade Fragment. Elder Han attempted to invoke the sect’s reputation to pressure the unknown bidder in VIP Room Eight, but Su Yueli refused to yield 71.
The delegation had also come seeking a high-grade life-extending herb for a senior cultivator at a critical point in seclusion. Elder Han bid 500 Mid-Grade Spirit Stones on three five-hundred-year-old Sky-Blue Silver-Spotted Grasses, demonstrating the sect’s interest in longevity medicines 67 68.
The sect initially expected to secure the jade fragment with a bid of 1,000 Superior Spirit Stones. Elder Han explained that it was intended to assist the Grand Elder’s breakthrough 71.
The sect lost the fragment when Su Yueli bid 1,400 Superior Spirit Stones, exceeding its available funds. Its elders subsequently planned to ambush the winner outside Heavenly Abyss City 71.
Anticipating that pursuit, Su Yueli remained within the trading house’s protection for three days, refining the pills supplied by the sect before leaving in disguise. Azure Cloud disciples had already established searches outside the city and stopped the caravan in which she was traveling 72 75.
Pursuit and Retaliation
The sect pursued Su Yueli after she killed a disciple who had searched her caravan. Elder Han organized search parties after determining that the killer was an exceptionally dangerous martial artist rather than a conventional cultivator 78.
An earlier confrontation nearly exposed her when an inner disciple prepared to inspect her Storage Pouch. He abandoned the search to investigate a distant magical fluctuation, giving her a temporary reprieve 75 76.
Elder Han divided six inner disciples into three pairs to search east, west, and north while personally pursuing the southern route. He warned them not to engage the killer alone and to transmit any suspicious findings immediately 78.
Elder Han personally cornered Su Yueli with four disciples and a containment formation. Although her physical attack penetrated his spiritual defenses, his Seventh Realm Immortal Dao cultivation overwhelmed her; she escaped only by using the lifespan-burning Ultimate Dao Fifth Form: Life Burning and entering a secret realm 80.
Her escape cost thirty years of lifespan and left her severely injured. Elder Han recognized that her strength exceeded that of an ordinary Tenth Realm Martial God and considered her a future threat to the sect; he sought to capture her and uncover the source of her unusual power 80.
Inside the secret realm, Su Yueli captured a young sect cultivator, interrogated him about the village killings and Shen Qing’an’s deception, and forced him to unlock four seized Storage Pouches. She then killed him with Little Black. Elder Han’s Tracking Compass registered the disciple’s death, further intensifying his pursuit 81 82.
After more than thirty years of secluded cultivation, Su Yueli found that the Azure Cloud Sect’s forces had long since withdrawn from the secret realm 84.
Su Yueli later killed Jiang Ran, settling Shen Qing’an’s personal grievance. The sect found Jiang Ran’s corpse with his limbs shattered, head crushed, and Fifth Realm defensive treasure destroyed, but investigators could find no spiritual residue from his killer 99.
Imperial City Tournament and Seized Resources
The sect arrived at the Great Li Imperial City’s Immortal Dao Tournament aboard a massive azure flying vessel. Its elite disciples, alongside those of other major sects, dominated the preliminary contests against rogue cultivators and smaller sects. Su Yueli used the gathering to investigate her enemies and later monitored the sect’s Imperial City residence 93 94.
Following Jiang Ran’s death, she left the Imperial City and took the sect disciples’ storage rings and treasures to the Dark Baleful Domain in Cold Crow City. A black-market merchant valued five rings—belonging to two elite inner disciples, two ordinary inner disciples, and one personal disciple—at approximately 800 Upper-Grade Spirit Stones 99 100.
Because keeping or openly selling the goods risked attracting Azure Cloud Sect experts, Su Yueli accepted an unfavorable exchange for a Mountain-Suppressing Blood Pill made from Ninth Realm demonic-beast essence blood 100.
Azure Cloud Calamity
Su Yueli returned to Azure Cloud Mountain during Lu Feiyu’s advancement ceremony wearing the white carved mask associated with the “Masked God of Slaughter.” Her assault was intended to avenge her parents, Shen Qing’an, and the mortal victims of the sect’s crimes 124 125.
The ceremony attracted roughly one hundred thousand cultivators, including representatives of affiliated sects, major clans, aristocratic families, and royal houses from Great Li and Great Wei. Guests openly excused Lu Feiyu’s violence against mortals as insignificant beside his cultivation prospects 124 126 127.
Lu Feiyu recognized Su Yueli’s mask and recalled the girl who had escaped his massacre. He attempted to deny that the unaged woman could be that survivor, suggesting that she must instead be a descendant 126.
| Event | Outcome |
|---|---|
| Mountain-gate assault | Su Yueli killed the Sixth- and Seventh-Realm gatekeeping disciples with a single stomp, staining the ceremonial white-jade steps with blood 125. |
| Destruction of the sect formation | She endured the Heaven-Origin Mountain-Suppressing Formation’s lightning and flames, then destroyed the thousand-year-old formation by hand 125 126. |
| Death of Zhao Chengfeng | She shattered his Azure Sun Sword, killed him with one punch, and had Little Black devour his escaping Primordial Spirit 127 128. |
| Defeat of the sect leadership | The sect’s leaders deployed spatial techniques, the Mountain-River Immortal Suppression Seal, and Heaven-and-Earth Manifestations. Su Yueli and her Martial Soul broke their attacks, leaving the current sect master crippled 129 130. |
| Awakening of the old ancestor | The ancestor emerged from the forbidden grounds with power touching the Thirteenth Realm after the sect’s leadership and main peak were devastated 132. |
| Aftermath | Su Yueli escaped after self-destructing part of her Martial Soul and burning five hundred years of lifespan, severely injuring the ancestor and cracking the Immortal Mirror 134 138. |
News of the devastation spread throughout Great Li within half a day and rapidly reached Great Wei. The Great Li Emperor ordered an investigation into the unprecedented Thirteenth Realm martial artist, while cultivation clans and reclusive sects became alarmed by her unknown origins and the possibility of obtaining her Martial Dao inheritance 134.
Decline and Final Settlement
More than a century after the Azure Cloud Calamity, Azure Cloud Sect had lost much of its territory, its formation was weak, its main peak had been crudely rebuilt, and it was regarded as no more than a second-rate sect 138.
Its territory had shrunk by more than half, disciples were fewer and poorly equipped, and the mountain gate was guarded only by scattered, inattentive Qi Refining Stage disciples. The surviving ancestor’s Dao Foundation had been shattered in the earlier battle, leaving him severely weakened despite his continued presence in the forbidden grounds 138 139.
Su Yueli returned to settle her final karmic debt with the old ancestor. She deliberately spared uninvolved low-level disciples and made clear that she sought only those responsible for the old crimes 138 139.
The dying ancestor acknowledged that he had protected Lu Feiyu for the sect’s prestige. Su Yueli gave him one day to commit suicide, agreeing to conceal his death so the sect’s remaining members could retain the deterrence of his reputation. His life force vanished the following day, ending her vendetta against the Azure Cloud Sect 140.
The agreement was conditional: if the ancestor refused to take his own life within the allotted day, Su Yueli threatened to destroy the sect. His self-execution therefore both settled his personal debt and preserved the surviving institution 140.
When Su Yueli’s identity later became known during her assault on the Azure Moon Sect, the Azure Cloud Sect’s current master considered seeking outside protection but remembered the old ancestor’s warning that provoking her again would bring the sect’s destruction. The sect consequently remained uninvolved 187.
Mo Bufan publicly recognized Su Yueli as the figure who had nearly destroyed the Azure Cloud Sect a century earlier. When he subsequently attempted to inspect her history through Heaven’s Secrets Unveiled, even the known Azure Cloud Calamity appeared disconnected from her true identity in the karmic records 187 189.
