History
Ancient role
Azure Moon Sect is a major Great Li power with a long-standing military and political role. It fought for the dynasty during a past national calamity, earning the imperial family's protection as a crucial fighting force 189.
Six to seven thousand years before the sect's destruction, the sect became responsible for sealing the remains of an incompletely destroyed Demonic Sect Master, Motian Xing, within its deepest forbidden ground. This responsibility later allowed True Lord Cangming to pressure Zhao Xuankong and Mo Bufan into aiding the sect during Su Yueli's attack 194.
The original campaign against the demon involved the Great Li Imperial Family, Thousand Mechanisms Pavilion, and other first-rate powers. Despite their costly victory, they could not completely destroy his body or soul. Azure Moon Sect, then at the height of its power, was entrusted with his confinement; knowledge of the seal was restricted to ancestor-level figures of the supreme factions 194.
Shen Huai'an's recruitment and the village massacre
Shen Huai'an was taken from a mortal village near Fengling City after the sect identified his Supreme Heavenly Bone. He was elevated to Young Sect Master because of his extraordinary talent 22 91.
To sever Shen Huai'an's mortal attachments and cultivate an emotionless Dao Heart, Shen Tianzhou and Lu Kuangsheng ordered the annihilation of his home village. The massacre spared neither the old nor the young. Su Yueli's master, Lu Chen, committed suicide and took responsibility before the sect's disciples to protect her from being implicated in the severing of mortal ties 183 188 194.
Shen Huai'an's elder brother, Shen Qing'an, died separately, freezing to death in a ruined temple in Fengling City. The sect concealed the truth by telling Shen Huai'an that his brother died of illness, that the village was destroyed by demonic beasts, and that Su Yueli also died in that disaster 194.
Shen Huai'an later maintained that he had spent most of his time in secluded cultivation and knew nothing of the massacre. He stated that, had he known the truth, he would never have joined Azure Moon Sect or acknowledged Shen Tianzhou as his master 197.
Activities before the sect's fall
The sect maintained inner disciples, Pill Peak, bounty missions, and a substantial supply of cultivation resources. Qi Feng, an inner disciple, joined the hunt for the Earthsplitter Bear in Black Wind Valley and later used his rewards to obtain martial-artist pills for Su Yueli 51 56 58.
The Black Wind Valley bounty offered at least three Origin-Nourishing Pills for the core materials of the Fourth Realm demonic beast. Sect missions generally rewarded Spirit Stones, magical treasures, or immortal pills, making Qi Feng's assistance important to Su Yueli's plan to exchange cultivation resources for medicines usable by martial artists 50 58.
At Pill Peak, Shen Huai'an permitted Fang Mu to refine Qi Feng's martial-artist pills first because the ingredients for his own request had not yet arrived. Qi Feng explained that the pills would repay the mortal martial artist who had saved his life 56.
Its wealth was displayed at the Myriad Treasures Trading House auction, where Elder Zhao purchased the Purple-Gold Eight-Trigram Furnace for 800 Superior Spirit Stones as a gift for Shen Huai'an 69.
After Shen Huai'an reached the Sixth Realm, the sect master sent him to the Great Li Imperial City for the Martial Artists' Tournament and Cultivators' Tournament. Two Ninth Realm elders accompanied him as guards 87.
The sect expected him to claim the Cultivators' Tournament championship and gain practical experience in the mortal world. Shen Tianzhou emphasized that Shen Huai'an represented the sect and instructed him to kill anyone who blocked his path. During the tournament, Shen Huai'an defeated a Peak Fourth Realm rogue cultivator with a single lightning attack 87 94.
Su Yueli's investigation
Su Yueli first learned that Azure Moon Sect's Young Sect Master came from a village near Fengling City through Xu Changfeng. The information renewed her suspicion that the destruction of her former village was connected to the practice of severing mortal ties 22.
During their travels in Black Wind Valley, Qi Feng told her that Shen Huai'an had overcome a cultivation bottleneck and reached the Fourth Realm Late Stage. He also reported that Shen had returned from mortal-world training after cutting off his attachments, though the details were classified. Su Yueli treated this account as a lead rather than revealing her suspicions 52.
In the Imperial City, Su Yueli approached Shen Huai'an under the name Qingli and questioned him about his mortal origins. His Ninth Realm guardians recognized the questions as suspicious, and one followed and interrogated her. She concealed her identity and strength with a fabricated escort-agency background, leading the elders to dismiss her as an insignificant martial artist 91 92.
The guardians later feared that knowledge of the village massacre could turn Shen Huai'an against the sect. An elite sect spy reported Jiang Ran's death to them, demonstrating that Azure Moon Sect maintained an intelligence network beyond its mountain gate 98.
Su Yueli postponed a direct confrontation because of the sect's hidden foundations. Even after reaching the Twelfth and Thirteenth Martial Dao realms, she chose further cultivation rather than risk fighting ancient experts concealed within its forbidden grounds 117 122 140.
Omens before the assault
Su Yueli passed through Azure Moon Sect's territory while seeking an alchemist in the Great Li Imperial City. She observed its busy mountain gate and saw Qi Feng assigning tasks. Qi Feng briefly sensed that someone was watching him, but a fellow disciple reassured him that the active sect-protecting formation would have warned them of an intruder 141.
The sect master and Shen Huai'an later witnessed Su Yueli withstand the Dragonblood Crimson Marrow Pill's thunder tribulation without detectable spiritual power. They encountered her departing blue-clad figure while traveling toward the Immortal Abode, but failed to identify her; Shen Huai'an nevertheless felt a troubling familiarity 172 173.
When Su Yueli broke through to the Fourteenth Realm, the sect master, Shen Huai'an, and an ancient ancestor sensed the immense blood-and-vitality phenomenon. The ancestor questioned whether anything unusual had occurred within the sect and expressed concern that Great Li was approaching a major upheaval 176.
Destruction
Su Yueli arrived at the sect centuries later to demand accountability for the village massacre. When denied access to Shen Huai'an, she bypassed the outer formation and killed three inner sect elders with a release of Fourteenth Realm pressure 182.
Sect Master Shen Tianzhou and Grand Elder Lu Kuangsheng initially attempted to negotiate, but ordered an attack once Su Yueli exposed the massacre. The sect's elders, formations, and senior leadership were overwhelmed by her Martial Dao strength 183 184.
More than ten Twelfth Realm elders attacked her, while five elders combined their power through the Five Elements Heaven-Sealing Grand Formation. Su Yueli destroyed its Li Fire Vermilion Bird with one punch, severely injuring the participants through backlash 184.
As the clash destroyed the mountain gate, main hall, and surrounding peaks, injured elders ordered disciples to retreat beyond one hundred li and civilians at the foot of the mountain to evacuate. Shen Tianzhou and Lu Kuangsheng offered spiritual medicines, divine weapons, and territory as compensation, but Su Yueli rejected material repayment for the villagers' lives 185.
- Shen Tianzhou and Lu Kuangsheng deployed enormous Heaven-and-Earth Manifestations, which Su Yueli opposed with her blood-and-qi Martial Soul 185.
- Mo Bufan, also known as Drunken Heaven Daoist, initially intervened with a spiritual barrier to save Shen Tianzhou from a killing blow 186.
- Shen Tianzhou was killed by Su Yueli's Ultimate Dao, First Form—Mountain Splitter 188.
- Lu Kuangsheng was executed by Su Yueli after True Lord Cangming failed to secure a compromise 190.
- Cangming drained the sect-protecting formation to force himself into the Fourteenth Realm Late Stage, sacrificing the formation's remaining power in the process 192.
- Cangming's empowered sword attack collided with Su Yueli's Martial Soul and Ink Qilin-assisted punch, reducing the already ruined sect grounds to a vast crater and killing nearby lower-realm spectators 192.
- Cangming was ultimately killed during the battle, leaving the sect without its hidden Fourteenth Realm foundation 198 205.
- Shen Huai'an emerged from seclusion at the Twelfth Realm and discovered the sect reduced to ruins 192 193.
- Shen Huai'an initially attacked to avenge his master and sect, but recognized Su Yueli when his sword shattered her mask. Her account of the massacre then undermined his faith in the sect's version of his past 193 194.
- Su Yueli eventually shattered Shen Huai'an's cultivation and Heavenly Bone, ending her former bond with him and bringing down the sect's remaining leadership 198.
Collapse of the demonic seal
The destruction of the sect and Cangming's death allowed Motian Xing, the Demon Sect Master previously sealed in Azure Moon Sect's forbidden ground, to escape 205.
Before the seal failed, Cangming threatened to release the demon if Zhao Xuankong and Mo Bufan refused to protect the sect. The danger compelled the two experts to join him against Su Yueli, bringing the pressure of three Late Fourteenth Realm cultivators to bear over the ruined grounds 194.
Motian Xing subsequently seized Shen Huai'an's body after Shen's death. Using the Young Sect Master's identity and the survivors' faith in him, the possessed Shen lured more than one hundred disciples and elders into a gorge and sacrificed them through a demonic formation to restore his damaged cultivation 198 199.

Sect Assets and Defenses
- Mountain headquarters — An extensive immortal mountain range containing thousands of pavilions and towers, spiritual veins, and a main peak plaza. Two jade pillars one hundred zhang high marked its mountain gate 181 182.
- Azure Moon Grotto-Heaven — A heavily restricted forbidden ground protected by layered ancient formations; Shen Huai'an cultivated there while attempting his Twelfth Realm breakthrough 185.
- Sect-protecting formation / Azure Moon Formation — A longstanding formation covering the sect's mountain range, described as having protected it for tens of thousands of years. Cangming later drained its spiritual power into himself, temporarily raising his cultivation to the Fourteenth Realm Late Stage and destroying the formation's remaining foundation 192.
- Aerial restriction formation — Prohibited flight over the main peak, though Su Yueli bypassed it without resistance 182.
- Five Elements Heaven-Sealing Grand Formation — A combined formation deployed by five elders, producing a gigantic Li Fire Vermilion Bird reputed to have challenged a Thirteenth Realm expert. Su Yueli destroyed it with a single punch 184.
- Ancient demonic seal — The sect's forbidden ground once held the sealed remnant of Motian Xing, a Demonic Sect Master. Cangming used the prospect of breaking the seal to force Zhao Xuankong and Mo Bufan to intervene, but the demon escaped amid the sect's collapse 194 205.
- Pill Peak — The sect's alchemy branch, capable of refining cultivation pills and handling requests from disciples 56.
- Purple-Gold Eight-Trigram Furnace — A legendary pill furnace acquired for Shen Huai'an at the cost of 800 Superior Spirit Stones; it improved refinement success rates and could produce mutated pills 69.
- Glazed Immortal Sword and Dharma manifestations — Shen Tianzhou wielded a powerful immortal sword, while he and Lu Kuangsheng could summon colossal Heaven-and-Earth Manifestations. Cangming later gathered numerous sect swords into a thousand-zhang Glazed Immortal Sword for his formation-enhanced attack 184 185 192.
Relationships
- Great Li Imperial Family — The dynasty regarded Azure Moon Sect as a pillar of national strength because of its military value; Zhao Xuankong intervened to prevent Su Yueli from destroying it completely 189.
- Thousand Mechanisms Pavilion — Mo Bufan initially protected Shen Tianzhou during the battle. Cangming later invoked the danger of the sealed Demonic Sect Master to compel his reluctant intervention 186 194.
- Shen Huai'an — The sect's favored Young Sect Master and future hope. Its leaders sacrificed his village and concealed the truth about his family and former companions to shape his Dao Heart. He later denied knowing of the massacre and repudiated the choices that had brought him into the sect 183 194 197.
- Su Yueli — Enemy and survivor of the village massacre. Her assault killed the sect master, Grand Elder, and other leaders, leaving the sect in ruins 183 188 198.
- Qi Feng — Inner disciple who formed a practical alliance with Su Yueli before learning the full extent of her connection to the sect 51 58.
- Azure Cloud Sect — A competing Great Li immortal sect. Elder Zhao exchanged barbs with Elder Han at the Myriad Treasures auction, mocked Azure Cloud Sect's costly bidding, and took satisfaction in its difficulties against the anonymous guest in Room Eight 67 68 71.
- Red Sun Sect — Another sect competing for resources and treasures. Elder Zhao outbid its representatives for the Purple-Gold Eight-Trigram Furnace, provoking their displeasure 69.
- Motian Xing — The Demonic Sect Master whom the sect had sealed for millennia. He escaped after the sect's collapse, forcibly possessed Shen Huai'an, and used the sect's surviving members as sacrificial fuel 194 198 199 205.
- Azure Moon Sect survivors — After the sect's collapse, they placed their hopes in Shen Huai'an. Following his possession by Motian Xing, he lured more than one hundred of them into a gorge and sacrificed them through a demonic formation 198 199.
Notable Practices
Cultivation through severing mortal ties
The sect's leadership treated Shen Huai'an's mortal attachments as obstacles to his cultivation. Lu Kuangsheng and Shen Tianzhou arranged the massacre of Shen Huai'an's village so that he could cultivate a more ruthless and emotionless Dao Heart 183 188.
The crime was hidden from both the wider cultivation world and Shen Huai'an himself. The sect's leaders feared that exposure would destroy its thousand-year reputation and give rival factions cause to suppress it 188 194.
Shen Huai'an's guardians likewise regarded the concealed truth as a threat to the sect's survival, fearing that its favored genius would overturn the institution if he learned what had been done to his village 98.
Preference for talent and sect legacy
The sect invested immense resources in Shen Huai'an, including decades of secluded cultivation, spiritual medicine, personal Ninth Realm guards, and a legendary pill furnace 69 87.
True Lord Cangming considered Shen Huai'an's advancement more important than the deaths of Shen Tianzhou and other senior members, viewing the Young Sect Master's potential as the sect's path to survival 190.
Cangming initially remained inside the Azure Moon Grotto-Heaven to guard the breakthrough despite the battle outside. After Shen Huai'an emerged, he urged him to escape and preserve the sect's future, but the Young Sect Master refused to abandon it 185 193.
Status-based treatment of mortals
Low-ranking disciples initially dismissed Su Yueli because she appeared to be an ordinary mortal martial artist. Once Qi Feng revealed her Tenth Realm Martial God status, they immediately apologized and treated her with respect 52.
During her final confrontation with the sect, elders and disciples openly minimized the significance of the village massacre, describing mortals as an ant-like multitude whose deaths had little relevance to cultivation. Su Yueli criticized their willingness to negotiate only after she demonstrated sufficient strength to threaten them 183.
These attitudes did not make every member uniformly hostile to mortals. Qi Feng used his own rewards to repay Su Yueli's life-saving assistance, and Shen Huai'an permitted the refinement of her martial-artist pills ahead of his own request 56.
Aftermath
The battle reduced the sect's mountain gate, halls, and surrounding peaks to ruins. Its formation was drained, its sect master and Grand Elder were killed, True Lord Cangming also fell, and its remaining members scattered 192 198 205.
After Su Yueli left, the survivors attempted to rally around Shen Huai'an. Unbeknownst to them, Motian Xing had forcibly possessed him; their hope of rebuilding Azure Moon Sect ended when he used them as fuel for a demonic formation 198 199.
The sacrificed group included more than one hundred disciples and several outer sect elders. They followed the possessed Young Sect Master in the belief that his Heavenly Bone could preserve the sect's future, but the formation drained their life essence, blood energy, and lifespan until they were reduced to skeletons 199.
The conflict also displaced ordinary mortals. Su Yueli encountered frightened refugees after leaving the ruined territory, showing that the consequences of the battle extended beyond the sect's cultivators 199.
The sect's collapse also ended its ability to contain Motian Xing. The escaped Demon Sect Master later exploited wars and massacres across multiple states through Demon Seeds, life-force harvesting, and death-qi formations 205 246 250.
Azure Moon Sect's destruction became one of the feats underlying Su Yueli's reputation as a peerless Goddess of War. When experts gathered for a later siege against the demon, Fourteenth Realm cultivators from other dynasties recalled her devastation of the sect with awe and wariness 228.
