Dinner was eaten on the pier.
Sanji cleaned the fish Chopper had caught and roasted it over the fire. It was so big that half was enough to feed eight people. Sanji rubbed salt into the other half and hung it at the stern to dry. Usopp had somehow gotten hold of a jar of local rice wine. Boss Zhou had practically given it away, saying it would help keep them warm on their journey. Luffy took one sip, stuck out his tongue, and declared that it tasted worse than water, then turned to snatch the grilled fish from Chopper's hands.
After dinner, Nami ducked back into the cabin and spread the Log Pose and several nautical charts across the table, comparing them over and over. When Naruto came in, she was drawing a line north from White Reef Island on one of the charts. It wandered crookedly because the needle kept making tiny adjustments.
"Still changing?" Naruto pulled up a stool and sat down.
"More slowly." Nami didn't look up. "I've been watching it since you came back this afternoon. The needle's eastward angle is about five degrees smaller than it was this morning, and it's still slowly straightening out. That means the thing is moving north. Not fast, but on a very steady course."
"The woman in the red dress is heading north too."
"Exactly. Now it makes sense." Nami set down her pen and looked up at him. "Whatever used to sit in that recess in the stone platform, she has it now, and she's taking it somewhere to the north. The needle is pointing to the thing itself, not the platform's location."
Naruto took out the notebook in which he had copied the characters that afternoon, opened it to a page, and handed it to Nami.
