History

Founding

Nightview City was first established on the border between the former Land of Waterfalls and Land of Iron by Yayoi’s mercenary organization. Built from wood and stone around a steel framework, it became a settlement capable of housing tens of thousands after six years of expansion. 1

Yayoi later overthrew the daimyos and resistance forces of both neighboring countries. He replaced the daimyo system with a shogunate, took control of their military and bureaucracy, and merged their territories into the Land of Night. By the opening of the story, the state had existed for nine years and had largely eliminated restoration movements. 1

The Hagoromo Clan, which had fled into the country after defeat in the Land of Fire, attempted to establish itself as an internal threat. Yayoi eventually destroyed the clan, reinforcing the new state’s deterrent power. 1

Yayoi’s founding campaigns relied on his own ninjutsu and taijutsu, a large puppet army, and techniques that forced living enemies to fight one another. Irori also participated, although her abilities were considerably less developed than they later became. 12

Consolidation and Clan Integration

The Land of Night expanded its manpower through controlled alliances, migration, and recruitment:

• The Hyuga Clan entered a marriage alliance with Yayoi through Hyuga Kicho. The clan retained its Land of Fire territory but received access to Land of Night resources and trade networks. 6
• The Aburame Clan joined the state, establishing its main settlement in Nightview City while receiving a secondary base in the Black Steel Forest. Its leader, Orochimaru, became director of the Intelligence Division. 8
• The Hoshigaki Clan migrated from the Land of Water after discrimination and resource shortages. It was accepted under a three-month observation period and presented Samehada to Yayoi. 35
• Uchiha Hokuto led 173 breakaway Uchiha into the country. They received a dedicated district in Nightview City, land for clan facilities, and state-backed renovation funding. 71 74

The state also dealt harshly with groups it regarded as hostile. The Kusanagi Clan’s newly established settlement was destroyed after Yayoi’s forces killed its leadership and eliminated forty-seven ninja and more than two hundred ordinary clansmen. 25

During the upheaval accompanying the establishment of the great ninja villages, Kurobei mediated the peaceful admission of more than one hundred displaced ninja, including survivors of secret-technique clans. Hostile exiles were instead suppressed. Irori eliminated invading clans along the northern coast within half a month, culminating in the freezing of an island stronghold; the campaign stabilized the border and encouraged further immigration. 19 20

The first Samurai Tournament produced another influx of immigrants. Yayoi ordered background investigations of incoming samurai and their families to screen for spies. Among those accepted were Hatake Shinjiro, Azumi, and tournament champion Miyamoto Raizo. Raizo and Tamaki, the surviving princess of the destroyed Land of Flow, received protection on the condition that they abandon revenge and restoration plans. 190

Rise as a Major Power

Unlike smaller countries destabilized by the One Country, One Village system, the Land of Night had already centralized its military and political institutions before the great villages fully emerged. Its ninja and samurai were organized under state authority rather than independent clan rule. 18 19

By its twentieth year, the country ranked sixth in population and territory, fourth economically, and first in combined industrial and agricultural production. Its elite fighters, puppet forces, and samurai establishment placed it among the Ninja World’s three strongest militaries despite weaker lower-tier forces than those of the Five Great Nations. 212 231

By Year 25, the population exceeded 34 million. Its military included approximately 4,500 ninja, 11,000 samurai, 10,000 Ghost Puppets, and fifteen large puppets. The prewar assessment estimated that jōnin comprised 3.8 percent of its ninja force and chūnin approximately half; Upper Samurai comprised 0.4 percent of its samurai force, with Intermediate Samurai accounting for approximately 30 percent. 231

The country’s wartime performance overturned Kumogakure’s initial assessment of it as a lesser power. After encountering successive hidden elites, A privately characterized it as effectively a sixth great nation. Other villages likewise continued to treat its strength as a priority concern after the war. 250 312

First Shinobi World War

Kumogakure opened the conflict by secretly building a forward base in an undeveloped Land of Night archipelago and preparing an invasion of the northern mining region. 232

Yayoi responded by striking the Cloud command base directly. The Land of Night’s principal force then counterattacked into the Land of Lightning, occupied resource-rich Maple City, seized industrial supplies, and forced Kumogakure into a prolonged defensive campaign. 233 239 243

Komurasaki’s covert operations provoked a Two-Tails rampage that damaged the Cloud camp and delayed its counterattack. On the flanking battlefield in the Land of Hot Water, Izayoi’s Special Assault Department incorporated a Konoha support team consisting of Sarutobi Hiruzen, Shimura Danzō, and Uchiha Kagami. 241 245

Kumogakure later used the Heavenly Transfer Technique to send A behind the Land of Night’s lines, attacking squads, signal towers, and shipping. The Land of Night countered with layered surveillance, reactivated Puppet Samurai, and a Four Violet Flames Battle Formation supported by hundreds of puppets and reserves numbering in the thousands. Yayoi’s main force subsequently defeated the Cloud counteroffensive and captured valuable enemy personnel. 254 256 259 262

The conflict ended through prisoner exchanges and a ceasefire. The Land of Night obtained the Heavenly Transfer Technique, returned Cloud prisoners including A, and gained the opportunity to interfere in the politically leaderless Land of Fields. 267

The postwar assessment lists the Land of Night as having annexed the Land of Fields, seized industrial resources from the Land of Lightning, and lost no major personnel. 292

Postwar Recovery and Eastern Integration

The Land of Night withdrew from the war in Year 27, completing its return from all battlefields by mid-April. Yayoi reinforced the island base between the Lands of Night and Lightning and retained Doichi there under Uchiha Hokuto to gain experience in maritime defense. Returning troops received leave while Aoi and Rinko temporarily handled governmental duties. 267 268

Although its losses were comparatively limited in the final international assessment, some formations suffered heavily. The 3,000-person main army lost approximately 300 personnel, while the 1,500-person force in the Land of Hot Water lost nearly half its strength. Izayoi’s assault force also lost almost half its members. Yayoi estimated that restoring prewar strength would require at least three years, with broader military transformation potentially taking a decade. Annual Military Academy intake was increased from approximately 300 students to more than 1,000. 268 292

Yayoi began formally encroaching on the Land of Fields in June while Konoha and the Land of Fire remained occupied by the war. He had prepared the annexation for more than a decade. Resistant nobles were removed, while some locally respected nobles were retained; submission required surrendering political power but allowed the preservation of noble status and wealth. 269

Izayoi and Oboro conducted a final cleanup before formal absorption, eliminating armed opponents and bounty hunters attempting to resist the expansion. The former Land of Fields subsequently became the Land of Night’s major grain-producing region. 277 328

Integration nevertheless remained incomplete. Years later, merchants, civilian officials, and Military Bureau personnel secretly operated private Ninja Academies in the eastern region, using illegally supplied weapons to build an independent armed force. Izayoi detected the network early, but Yayoi delayed intervention to expose its full membership before assigning Doichi to investigate and suppress it. 330 332

Doichi’s operation at Kuroda Castle identified more than a dozen principal conspirators and over a thousand participants, including individuals in Nightview City. His report distinguished levels of responsibility and recommended execution, imprisonment, demotion, or mining labor rather than an indiscriminate purge. Yayoi approved the decisions and ordered further action against the eastern rebels, with Tadayuki and Hideyuki assigned to assist Doichi. 332 333

Succession to Oda Doichi

Doichi’s marriage to Chihiro marked the beginning of greater personal and administrative independence. Foreign representatives initially speculated that Rikuo’s extraordinary strength might produce a succession rivalry, but Yayoi continued preparing Doichi as his confirmed successor. Over more than two years, trusted members of Doichi’s generation entered the upper and middle ranks of government, steadily replacing older officials. 330 333

Doichi eventually managed most affairs of state, and his residence became known as the “Little General’s Residence.” Yayoi increasingly withdrew from daily administration while retaining the influence associated with his personal strength. 334 344

Foreign nations tested the transition by sending unauthorized shinobi to raid shipping and probe the borders. Irori froze an occupied northern island, while the other sisters eliminated additional intruders. The immediate response discouraged further probing, and Hiruzen recalled Konoha’s planned investigative team. 344

On December 15 of Year 35, Doichi formally became the Second Shogun. The inauguration was broadcast to major towns and followed by several days of celebrations in Nightview City. Yayoi delivered a farewell speech and publicly transferred leadership to his son. Foreign observers concluded that the younger generation remained too powerful for the transition to be exploited. 347 348

Yayoi subsequently relocated his household and possessions to Heavenly Dao Palace on Great Snow Mountain, handing Tenshu Tower and the Inner Court over to Doichi. His collection, occupying more than a thousand specially designed shipping containers, was moved using the Heavenly Transfer Technique. He left routine diplomacy and national security to the new shogun while concentrating on research. 349 353

Rōran Resettlement

The people of Rōran were offered either a newly built settlement in the Land of Wind or relocation into the Land of Night. Their queen chose migration, and Doichi approved construction of a new town of Rōran within Land of Night territory. 354 355

Rōran’s population numbered fewer than one hundred thousand. Its people received favorable treatment because they brought assets and because the royal family possessed a hereditary chakra-control ability. The queen’s sovereign title was abolished to prevent a state within a state, but she was appointed the new town’s first mayor. 355

Government and Society

Shogunate System

The Land of Night abolished the former daimyo governments of the Lands of Waterfalls and Iron. Its shogun directly controls national policy, the economy, and the armed forces rather than sharing authority with a separate ninja village. 1 5

• The Military Bureau was established soon after the country’s founding as the national defense organization for ninja and samurai. 5
• The Security Corps was created in Nightview City to handle law enforcement, civil disputes, and domestic security; it was initially organized as a one-year trial program. 19
• The Intelligence Division uses Aburame surveillance, tracking, infiltration, and espionage techniques. 8
• The National Defense Military Special Assault Department is an elite seventy-member force divided into four squadrons and sixteen four-person teams. 213

Entry into the country is tightly regulated. Visitors require official documents or prior notification; unauthorized entrants can be treated as enemies. 74

The shogunate is an absolute monarchy based on bloodline succession rather than the selection procedures used for the Five Kage. Yayoi’s marriage alliance with the Hyuga was intended partly to establish a stable line of heirs and a dependable familial support network. This succession system culminated in Doichi’s inheritance of national political and military authority. 5 345 347 348

The Military Bureau’s early organization included Execution, Logistics, Intelligence, Education, Research, and Medical divisions. Education was treated as the foundation for staffing the other departments, while medical shortages initially required Yayoi to perform much of the healing work personally. 5

Later administrative developments include:

Irori acted as Yayoi’s agent and could negotiate on his behalf, functioning as another central figure in the state. She later served as Deputy Shogun before shifting to the role of Yayoi’s personal envoy following his retirement. 71 353

Civil Administration

Nightview City is depicted as unusually clean, orderly, and prosperous for the era, with smooth roads, healthy residents, organized markets, and goods uncommon even in the Land of Fire’s capital. 7

The country uses infrastructure to mitigate harsh conditions. During winter, geothermal installations beneath Nightview City release heated steam and keep streets warm. 19

Prisoners in the Black Mountain Mining District receive food, shelter, modest wages for their families, and Earth Release protection against cave-ins. The system is intended to combine punishment with rehabilitation and future reintegration. 136

The capital’s heating facilities had prevented deaths from freezing for years despite its early winters. Its commercial districts also support lively night markets, restaurants, public celebrations, and puppet performances. 11 95

National education emphasizes gradual development, cultural learning, combat preparation, and mental health, particularly for Uchiha children. Yayoi’s approach contrasts with the practice of exposing children immediately to the violence of clan warfare. 216

The state prohibits independent military structures within its territory. The private Ninja Academy conspiracy was treated as a challenge to central authority, while Rōran’s integration required abolishing separate sovereignty even as its former queen retained municipal leadership. 330 333 355

Foreign Support System

The Land of Night does not operate a conventional public ninja mission system. Instead, it provides low-cost military support to allied countries, officials, and merchants in order to protect trade routes and strengthen political ties. 205

Missions are issued centrally by the General’s Residence rather than openly commissioned through a village marketplace. This arrangement makes the country’s ninja and samurai capabilities unusually difficult for outsiders to assess. 51 184

Under Doichi, foreign operations continued to combine commercial protection with political pressure. Rikuo was assigned to recover a stolen shipment in the Land of Thoughts, dismantle the thieves’ network and its merchant collaborators, and pressure the local daimyo to stop undermining cooperation. He later received an S-rank commission from the Land of Flow’s daimyo to investigate attacks targeting a hereditary secret technique. 340 355

Military and Strategic Assets

The Special Assault Department was designed for versatile operations rather than relying exclusively on individual combat strength. Its original seventy members included a minister, deputy minister, four squadron captains, and sixteen four-person teams. Each team combined combat personnel, a medical ninja, and a specialist, while Izayoi personally evaluated officers and developed coordination between recruits from different departments. 213

Tailed-Beast Cooperation and Deterrence

Before Doichi’s inauguration, foreign villages believed that the Land of Night possessed a Seven-Tails jinchūriki and technology for producing perfect jinchūriki. Yayoi deliberately preserved the misunderstanding because it strengthened deterrence and encouraged requests for military cooperation. 254 268

The Seven-Tails’ public appearance as a department director overturned those assumptions. Rather than sealing it into a host, the country had secured its cooperation directly. Its relaxed treatment at the ceremony prompted foreign representatives to reconsider whether peaceful relations with their own Tailed Beasts were possible. 347 349

After Kirigakure’s failed attempt to train a Tailed Beast, the Land of Night’s coexistence with the Seven-Tails became a focus of renewed diplomatic and intelligence interest. The Three Sisters continued patrolling the borders and striking hostile spies, while Doichi assumed responsibility for managing these foreign pressures. 353

Key Locations

The northern waters include an archipelago far enough from the mainland that it initially remained undeveloped despite falling within national borders. Kumogakure exploited this lack of development to establish its wartime forward base, after which the Land of Night strengthened maritime infrastructure and control. 232 268

Economy and Industry

The Land of Night’s development model relies on centralized military protection, industrial construction, agriculture, resource extraction, and state-directed infrastructure. It ranks first in combined industrial and agricultural production among the assessed major powers. 231

• The country’s Chakra Ore mines are described as a pillar industry. 151
• Trade with Iwagakure and Sunagakure includes Chakra minerals, Chakra Metal, Dragon Vein Chakra, and herbs. 216
• During the war in the Land of Lightning, the military systematically seized industrial equipment, Chakra Ore, fuel, rubber, gold, food, and medical supplies. 239 247
• The Land of Night maintains extensive Black Market influence; Yayoi is widely rumored to be one of its major shareholders. 177

The annexation of the Land of Fields added extensive fertile plains suitable for numerous crops. Its agricultural importance complemented the country’s long-standing commercial expansion, which attracted merchants from across the Ninja World and earned it the alternative description “Land of Commerce.” Earlier attempts by wealthy merchants to establish a merchant-dominated political order did not succeed. 328

Puppet labor is important beyond warfare. Naraku-controlled machines constructed the Great Snow Mountain complex while operating continuously with chakra and lubricating oil, without food, rest, or wages. Damaged components could be replaced, and discarded bodies could be recycled, sharply reducing the time and manpower required for major projects. 273 276

The country also maintains strategic reserves. It imports raw materials in bulk, processes and stores them domestically, and continues purchasing medicinal herbs even when existing stocks are sufficient for years. These reserves are intended to protect the state against future crises. 340

Dragon Vein Chakra remained a major strategic import. When a shipment from Rōran was stolen, Sunagakure warned that the annual transaction could be delayed. A secret signaling device placed inside the container enabled the Land of Night to locate it, and Yayoi’s expedition discovered the stolen chakra in Shinnō’s hidden laboratory in the Land of Rivers. 333 334 337

External Relations

• Konohagakure — Allied with the Land of Night and Hidden Hot Water during the First Shinobi World War. The Land of Night later withdrew after securing its own ceasefire with Kumogakure. The two countries also conducted a joint prewar investigation through the Special Assault Department and Konoha Anbu. Under Doichi, Konoha favored cautious cooperation and intelligence gathering, recognizing that the succession had not weakened its neighbor. Yayoi separately considered using Sunagakure’s improved Tailed-Beast relations to increase pressure on Konoha, while postponing direct action until a favorable opening arose. 221 243 267 345 348 355
• Sunagakure — A major trade partner. Sunagakure granted the Land of Night access to Dragon Vein Chakra in exchange for inexpensive Chakra Metal. Earlier agreements exchanged advanced Wind Release research for a broad Puppet Technique system and established an exchange-student program. Cooperation continued through the stolen Dragon Vein shipment investigation and Irori’s later negotiations for additional chakra, supported by a personal letter from Yayoi. Yayoi shared advice on treating Shukaku respectfully partly to redirect Sand’s military attention toward the Land of Fire. 127 194 334 353 355
• Iwagakure — Participates in expanding trade with the Land of Night and Sunagakure; its leadership later sought access to the Land of Night’s supposed perfect-jinchūriki technology. Yayoi had cultivated Mu’s friendship well before the war, viewing him as a valuable future ally. 51 216 268
• Kumogakure — Invaded Land of Night territory, suffered a counterinvasion, and eventually accepted a ceasefire involving prisoner exchanges and transfer of the Heavenly Transfer Technique. Suspicion persisted afterward: Sand initially suspected Cloud of stealing Dragon Vein Chakra, while Doichi later suspected Cloud involvement in attacks on the Land of Flow’s hereditary technique. • Land of Fields — Gradually infiltrated and brought under Land of Night control following the wartime disappearance of its daimyo and major nobles. Annexation was followed by agricultural development and further campaigns against underground resistance. 269 292 328 333
• Kusagakure — Resented the relocation of Hokuto’s Uchiha branch to the Land of Night. Kicho later investigated the assassin Black Fang there, obtaining the new village chief’s agreement to condemn him as a rogue ninja and apologize. 74 155
• Land of Rain / Amegakure — Yayoi sheltered Raizo and Tamaki after the destruction of their homeland by the Land of Rain, while requiring them to abandon retaliation. He later rejected Amegakure’s request for wartime assistance and declined to support it against neighboring powers. He expected the region’s unstable position to make it a likely flashpoint for another Shinobi World War. 190 268 300 355
• Land of Thoughts — Supplies medicinal herbs to the Land of Night. Trade-route attacks involving thieves, corrupt merchants, and hired Black Market ninja prompted Doichi to dispatch Rikuo and pressure the local daimyo. 340
• Land of Flow — Its daimyo commissioned an S-rank mission against a group seeking the country’s hereditary secret technique. Doichi assigned Rikuo to investigate and stop the attacks. 355
• Rōran — Initially a source of Dragon Vein Chakra traded through Sunagakure. Its population later chose relocation into the Land of Night, exchanging independent sovereignty for a protected settlement and municipal leadership under the former queen. 194 195 354 355

The Hyuga branches in the Land of Night and Konoha remained connected through mutual dependence despite complicated main-house and branch-house grievances. Their relationship contrasted with the more openly antagonistic relations between the two Uchiha branches. 331

Samurai Culture

After absorbing the Land of Iron’s schools, the Land of Night became the Ninja World’s leading samurai state and the only country described as preserving a complete samurai culture while also supporting a full ninja system. 178

Its First Samurai Tournament drew foreign leaders, nobles, ninja-village representatives, and independent swordsmen. The event served as both a public competition and a display of national military strength, infrastructure, and organizational capacity. 177 184

The tournament originated in Kurobei’s proposal to attract skilled foreign samurai and improve the country’s martial traditions. Its champion received fifty million ryo, a custom high-quality Chakra Blade, and the title of the Ninja World’s greatest swordsman. The event accepted participants without restrictions on age, gender, or identity, subject to registration and preliminary selection. 175 177

The Martial Arena incorporated covered stands, heating, drainage, and Aburame projection screens. More than forty thousand spectators attended, with broadcasts extending throughout Nightview City. Kakuzu refereed, and military police managed the crowds. Rules prohibited ninjutsu, concealed weapons, medicines, performance-enhancing drugs, and lethal attacks. 184 185

Samurai modernization centered on the Sword Cannon. Kurobei’s initial impact-based sword technique was refined with Hyuga Gentle Fist principles, developing into a stable explosive ranged attack usable by Upper Samurai and some Intermediate Samurai. Combined attacks demonstrated artillery-like destructive force, and the technique became a standard feature of the Land of Night’s swordsmanship. 123 175 186 213

Miyamoto Raizo won the tournament and later served as a Military School adviser. The competition also strengthened public confidence: witnessing powerful local samurai gave citizens a concrete measure of the nation’s military strength, while its recruitment effect brought additional swordsmen into state service. 189 190 213
