Background / History
Nagato was originally a war orphan from the Rain Country. His parents were killed during the Second Shinobi World War; he later met Konan and Yahiko, trained under Jiraiya, and helped found Akatsuki. 3
At the moment Yahiko sacrificed himself during Hanzo and Danzō's ambush, a modern Naruto fan named Lin Feng transmigrated into Nagato's body. Refusing to accept Nagato's original fate, he saved Konan, awakened Adamantine Sealing Chains, and recognized Obito as the force manipulating the tragedy. 1
Following a ten-day coma, Lin Feng experienced Nagato's entire life through his memories and confronted Nagato's remaining consciousness in a dream. When he awoke, he had fully inherited Nagato's memories, skills, emotional attachments, and identity. 3
Nagato negotiated a one-year delay before openly confronting Obito. He used that interval to strengthen himself, create and refine the Six Paths of Pain, recruit useful allies, and prepare Amegakure as an independent power base. 2 4 14
Appearance
Nagato is a red-haired young man with Rinnegan. The Life Transference Reincarnation technique turned half of his hair white after he used it to save Kushina; absorbing Nine-Tails chakra later restored its red color. 154 156
- Red hair, characteristic of his Uzumaki heritage. 1
- Rinnegan normally concealed beneath his hair. 1
- Can replace both Rinnegan with Madara's Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan. 120
- Publicly separates his identity from Pain, allowing the Rain Daimyo and Lord Pain to be treated as two aspects of a divine figure. 178
Personality
Nagato is calculating, secretive, and highly adaptive. He withholds knowledge from Orochimaru to retain leverage, invents plausible explanations for his future knowledge, and continuously turns enemies' abilities, corpses, and motives into resources. 11 54 142
He is driven by a refusal to remain Madara and Obito's pawn. Although he initially approaches Obito cautiously, he ultimately exposes Obito's identity, defeats him personally, and forces him into rebuilding Akatsuki under Nagato's conditions. 163 170
Nagato is ruthless toward enemies and political threats. After taking Amegakure, he systematically eliminates Hanzo's remaining supporters to prevent a restoration of the former regime. 59 However, he also displays compassion toward people he considers his own: he creates Kabuto a prosthetic hand, saves Kushina at great personal cost, and actively raises his biological, adopted, and godchildren. 52 154 178
His temperament can vary depending on the Pain body through which he acts. Orochimaru observes that Pain A expresses a more forceful side, the Deva Path a colder side, and the Animal Path a livelier side of Nagato's personality. 73
Abilities & Skills
Rinnegan
Nagato's Rinnegan is the foundation of his Six Paths technique and grants him access to the Paths' abilities. He later learns that the eyes were implanted by Madara rather than naturally awakened. 11 163
- Uses Banshō Ten'in to draw targets and objects toward himself. 10 112
- Uses Shinra Tensei for repulsion, including consecutive attraction-and-repulsion combinations. 112
- Uses Planetary Devastation to create a gravitational core that gathers terrain and debris into a celestial body. 167
- Uses Super Shinra Tensei, an amplified repulsion attack that obliterates Obito's nearby body and destroys the Planetary Devastation construct. 167 168
- Can summon the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path, though he initially avoided it to prevent Obito from exploiting his weakened state. 143 156 157
Six Paths of Pain
Nagato controls corpse-based bodies through Black Rod chakra receivers. Their shared vision and coordinated abilities allow him to fight across multiple locations while concealing his real body. 4 6
- Deva Path — Yahiko's body; specializes in gravitational techniques and serves as the highest-ranked Path. 4
- Animal Path — Rin's body, known as Pain Rin; summons creatures and other Paths, partially substituting for space-time ninjutsu. 4 6
- Human Path — extracts souls and reads information directly from targets' minds. 3 54 142
- Preta Path — absorbs chakra-based attacks, including Dust Release and Tailed Beast chakra. 79 156
- Naraka Path — uses the King of Hell to preserve, restore, and replace Pain bodies. 4 54
- Asura Path — provides mechanical limbs, missiles, cables, cannons, and other weaponry. 6 10
- Can alter the system by replacing fallen Paths with corpses possessing useful bloodlines or techniques, such as Kakuzu and Mu. 54 73 114
The Six Paths restrict Nagato's real body while their chakra network is active, and both Rinnegan are required to maintain the technique. Breakpoint Resumption mitigates this limitation by briefly redirecting chakra transmission back to Nagato's body. 8 24 120
Uzumaki Chakra and Sealing Techniques
Nagato possesses immense chakra reserves and Uzumaki vitality.
- Awakens Adamantine Sealing Chains under extreme pressure; the chains overwhelm Hanzo's troops and force Hanzo to retreat. 1
- Uses Black Rods as chakra transmitters, restraints, and weapons capable of disrupting opponents' techniques. 4 10
- Maintains enough chakra to support the Six Paths, powerful summons, and large-scale Rinnegan techniques. 154 168
Ninjutsu Mastery
Nagato inherited mastery of all six standard chakra natures and mainstream ninjutsu from Nagato's memories. 3 67
- Uses ordinary ninjutsu alongside Rinnegan techniques rather than relying exclusively on the Six Paths. 6
- Employs Water Release, including Yahiko's Water Turbulence and Hanzo's Water Body Flicker Technique. 6 137
- Learns an incomplete Flying Thunder God Technique from the Scroll of Seals; it requires hand seals and a thirty-second activation delay, making it impractical for immediate combat. 103
- Uses conventional skills such as Substitution Technique to mislead opponents who focus too heavily on his Rinnegan. 114
Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan
Nagato can temporarily replace both Rinnegan with Madara's Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan. Doing so disables the Six Paths of Pain but greatly improves close-range perception and reflexes. 120
- Ofutone — passively amplifies Nagato's taijutsu, ninjutsu, and genjutsu while active. 121
- Otonobe — grants extraordinary visual perception, allowing him to see through fog, read movements as though slowed, and detect deception such as Wood Release clones. 122 163
- Michi-kaeshi Ōkami — briefly confines the observed space and suppresses space-time techniques such as Kamui and Flying Thunder God; Nagato reserves it for a future decisive battle with Obito. 122 165
- Amatsu Ukemikoto — requires eye contact and magnifies an opponent's existing pain ten thousandfold. 122
- Ayakashi — costs Nagato ten years of life to reduce a target's remaining lifespan to three years; he conceals the technique from Orochimaru. 123
- Susanoo — manifests skeletal and incomplete forms, but Nagato cannot complete Madara's Susanoo because he is not the eyes' original owner. 123 124
Earth Grudge Fear and Mechanical Modification
Nagato masters Earth Grudge Fear and integrates it with Asura Path machinery and puppet technology. 80 168
- Acquires chakra pathways and biological components through hearts, supporting his pursuit of Yin Release and Kekkei Genkai. 67
- Develops the Golden Right Hand, a modified arm directly linked to his optic nerves, reflexes, and chakra pathways. 168
- Uses Asura Sniping, firing lightning, wind, or fire-infused ammunition with paralysis, curved internal damage, or explosive effects. 168
- Converts the same arm into an Asura Shotgun for close-range attacks. 168
Blood Rama
Blood Rama is an ancient forbidden technique intended to reproduce Kekkei Genkai by combining all seven chakra natures. 67
- Initially cannot use the technique fully because he lacks Yin Release chakra pathways. 67
- Copies Rasa's lifetime of Gold Dust Magnet Release knowledge through the Human Path. 142
- Successfully awakens Gold Dust Magnet Release and forms a functional Gold Dust third eye. 142
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Black Rods — chakra receivers used to control Pain bodies, restrain enemies, transmit chakra, and disrupt techniques. 4 10
- Six Paths Ninja Tools — claims the Golden Rope, Seven Stars Sword, Crimson Gourd, and Banana Palm Fan from Kinkaku and Ginkaku. 156
- Banana Palm Fan — channels his immense chakra into wide-area elemental attacks; he uses it to destroy Obito's Deep Forest Emergence with Wind Release. 163 164
- Scroll of Seals fragment — source of his incomplete Flying Thunder God Technique and Telescope Technique. 59 103
- Asura Sniping / Asura Shotgun — modular firearm configurations of his Golden Right Hand. 168
Relationships
- Konan — Childhood companion, closest confidante, co-ruler of Amegakure, and romantic partner. Nagato's earliest decisions after transmigrating center on rescuing and protecting her; later, he admits that accelerating the campaign against Hanzo is “for” her. 1 52 162 178
- Yahiko — Deceased best friend and Akatsuki co-founder. Yahiko's final request that Nagato live with Konan becomes a central motivation; Nagato preserves Yahiko's body as the Deva Path and maintains a mourning period in his memory. 1 4 80
- Jiraiya — Former teacher. Nagato avoids meeting him after awakening because he intends to choose a different path, but still wishes to prevent Jiraiya's remembered fate. 3
- Orochimaru — Research partner and uneasy ally. Nagato trades limited information for Orochimaru's scientific expertise, second-body work, and forbidden techniques. 11 63 124
- Kabuto Yakushi — Orochimaru's subordinate whom Nagato gradually cultivates through calculated kindness, including providing him with a mechanical left hand. 11 52
- Uchiha Obito — Former manipulator posing as Madara, later defeated rival and coerced political partner. Nagato exposes Obito's identity, defeats him without the Six Paths, and orders him to rebuild Akatsuki. 163 168 170
- Minato Namikaze — Jiraiya's senior disciple. Their first direct meeting is hostile, but Minato later entrusts Kushina to Nagato, addressing him sincerely as his junior brother. 87 153
- Fu — Nagato's living second body, engineered through Orochimaru's work as an Outer Path Pain with synchronized consciousness. Konan refers to Fu as Nagato's son. 63 130
- Nannan — Nagato's biological daughter. Their relationship is affectionate and teasing; he openly praises her progress while challenging her to improve further. 179
- Adopted children — Nagato raises Ajisai, Karin, Kimimaro, Jūgo, Tayuya, Kidōmaru, Jirōbō, Sakon and Ukon, Suigetsu, and Haku as family while also providing them training and political protection. 178 179
Story Role / Major Arcs
Breaking the Original Fate
Nagato's story diverges at Yahiko's death. Rather than collapse into despair or submit to Obito's expectations, he saves Konan, awakens Uzumaki power, and secures a year to build strength outside Obito's direct control. 1 2
Building Pain and Recruiting Allies
Nagato develops the Six Paths of Pain into a flexible military system, beginning with Yahiko as Deva Path and Rin as Animal Path. He defeats Sasori, gains Orochimaru's cooperation, and seeks techniques, corpses, bloodlines, and information that can expand his capabilities. 4 6 11 14
Conquest of Amegakure
Nagato accelerates his campaign against Hanzo partly out of concern for Konan. After defeating Hanzo, he purges the previous regime's supporters and establishes Pain as Amegakure's divine protector, while Konan becomes Lady Angel. 52 59
Second Body Plan
With Orochimaru and Kabuto, Nagato creates Fu: a living Outer Path Pain designed to share Nagato's consciousness while remaining independent of his real body's condition. Fu is intended to support Nagato's long-term pursuit of his own Sharingan and Rinnegan. 63 124 130
Nine-Tails Rebellion and Kushina's Rescue
Nagato outwardly cooperates with Obito's Nine-Tails operation while protecting his own agenda. He later uses Life Transference Reincarnation to save Kushina, sacrificing vitality and turning half his hair white before restoring himself with absorbed Nine-Tails chakra. 143 154 156
Defeat and Reassignment of Obito
After exposing Obito's false Madara identity, Nagato battles him alone. He counters Wood Release, Kamui, and Izanagi through Eternal Mangekyō perception, Rinnegan techniques, shared vision, and Asura weaponry, forcing Obito to surrender. 163 167 168
Rather than kill Obito, Nagato makes him rebuild Akatsuki with ten rogue ninja of broadly Hokage-level strength. Nagato retains Obito as a necessary shield against Black Zetsu while buying time for Fu to mature. 170
Rain Daimyo and Hidden Expansion
Nagato eventually becomes the Rain Daimyo while Pain remains Amegakure's visible leader. He secretly expands control over Grass, Waterfall, Frost, Rice Fields, Bird Country, and the Land of Rivers, creating a sphere of influence comparable to a great nation. 178
