Background

Obito inherited Madara’s will and adopted Madara’s identity to guide and manipulate Nagato. He presented Nagato as the Sage of Six Paths’ reincarnation and sought to turn him into the instrument for the Eye of the Moon Plan. 2

He exploited Danzō and Hanzō’s trap against Akatsuki to remove Yahiko, whom he considered an obstacle. Yahiko’s death was intended to isolate Nagato, deepen his despair, and push him toward synchronizing with the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path. 2

Obito initially considered Nagato manageable even if left unsupervised for a year, but became increasingly wary when Nagato’s Six Paths used the Third Kazekage’s corpse and suggested contact with Sasori and Orochimaru. 4 48

Appearance

Obito conceals his identity behind masks and altered personas. His appearance changed drastically after he transplanted Hashirama artificial bodies into himself to survive Minato’s attack. 151 158 160

  • Initially appeared in a single-eye mask while impersonating Madara. 2
  • Later wore a tiger-striped mask during the Nine-Tails Rebellion. 134 150
  • His exposed face is scarred, while the right side of his body was once composed of White Zetsu-derived tissue. 151
  • The Hashirama transplant made him taller and physically stronger, but left a permanent Hashirama face fused to his right chest and connected to his displaced heart. 160
  • He uses an orange spiral mask to hide his face and brands a heavy faceless metal mask over the chest growth. 160
  • He carries a cane after the damage to his right leg inflicted by Nagato. 170 182

Personality

Obito is manipulative, suspicious, and intensely controlling. He wants Nagato to grow stronger for the Eye of the Moon Plan, but only while Nagato remains a subordinate he can suppress. 4 48

His ideology is rooted in grief, especially his fixation on Rin and resentment toward Kakashi and Konoha. He claims to seek a reality without war, death, separation, or unrequited love, yet uses terror, deception, and civilian casualties to pursue it. 4 136 151

Despite repeatedly declaring that the former Obito is dead, his fear of death and appeal to Minato reveal that his former bonds still affect him. 150 151 He is also capable of adapting quickly after failure, replacing compromised identities and accepting temporary humiliation when it serves a longer-term plan. 160 170

Abilities & Skills

Mangekyō Sharingan and Kamui

Obito’s right Mangekyō Sharingan grants Kamui, a space-time technique that lets him phase through attacks and transport himself or targets through a vortex. 2 150

  • Uses intangibility to evade physical attacks and enter guarded locations. 51 144
  • Can attempt to absorb targets into Kamui space through direct contact. 150 167
  • Moved the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path into his space-time dimension, cutting off Nagato’s ability to summon it. 161
  • Must become tangible when seizing an opponent, creating a brief opening that Minato and Nagato exploit. 150 164
  • His eye resonates with Kakashi’s Sharingan, allowing him to sense Kakashi’s recovery and glimpse events through the connected eye. 134 135

Sharingan Genjutsu and Izanagi

Obito can use Sharingan genjutsu for interrogation and coercion. 49

After Minato exposed the limits of Kamui, Obito implanted Madara’s spare Sharingan into his empty left socket as an additional safeguard. 160

  • Activates Izanagi to turn injury and death into illusion during its active duration. 166
  • His Hashirama-enhanced body may extend Izanagi beyond its usual duration. 166
  • Used Izanagi repeatedly against Nagato, but Nagato’s shared-vision summons tracked his revival positions. 168

Hashirama Artificial Body and Wood Release

To survive Minato’s near-fatal attack, Obito transplanted every remaining Hashirama artificial body from the Demonic Statue into himself. The cells initially grew out of control and nearly crushed him beneath a mass of flesh. 158

  • Gains exceptional physical strength, regeneration, chakra, and Wood Release after surviving the transplant. 160 161
  • Developed a personal combat style combining taijutsu with efficient, lethal Wood Release rather than imitating Hashirama’s large-scale methods. 162
  • Uses Guardian Wood as an automatic defensive technique. 182
  • Uses Wood Release: Body Flicker for rapid movement. 182
  • Uses offensive techniques including Ferocious Cutting Sprigs, Deep Forest Emergence, Flower Tree Realm Emergence, and Hell’s Wild Dance. 163 164 166
  • The Hashirama face on his right chest is a critical weakness; damaging it risks causing the cells to lose control. 160

Uchiha Flame Formation

Obito can erect the Uchiha Flame Formation, a powerful barrier that seals the battlefield and prevents escape. 166

  • Used the barrier to trap Nagato inside a poisonous Flower Tree Realm. 166
  • The formation withstood Planetary Devastation for a time before Super Shinra Tensei overwhelmed it. 167 168

Uchiha Flame Fan

Obito wields the Uchiha Flame Fan in close combat. 182

  • Blocked Zabuza’s strength-enhanced Strong Water Hand. 182
  • Used Uchiha: Reflection to repel Zabuza’s attack and severely injure both of his arms. 182

Equipment

  • Orange spiral mask — modeled after Tobi’s face and used to conceal Obito’s identity. 160
  • Faceless Mask — a heavy metal plate branded over the Hashirama face on his chest. 160
  • Uchiha Flame Fan — defensive fan capable of reflecting attacks. 182
  • Chains — used with Kamui to create a close-range interception zone against Minato. 150
  • Cane — used after Nagato permanently damaged the nerves in his right leg. 170 182

Relationships

  • Nagato — Former target and subordinate whom Obito manipulated under Madara’s name; later his rival, temporary ally, and political superior after Nagato defeats him. 2 163 169 170
  • Tobi — White Zetsu-derived companion, rescuer, and the person Obito calls his only friend. Tobi restored enough of Obito’s strength for him to escape Minato. 151 160
  • Minato Namikaze — Obito’s former teacher. Minato defeats him during the Nine-Tails Rebellion but hesitates to kill him after recognizing his student. 150 151
  • Kakashi Hatake — Holds the left Sharingan Obito gave him. Obito despises Kakashi, monitors him through their ocular resonance, and remains emotionally affected by their shared past. 4 20 134 135
  • Rin Nohara — The central object of Obito’s grief and obsession; he repeatedly visits her grave and bases his desired new world on being reunited with her. 4 136 160
  • Black Zetsu — Nominal adviser and Madara’s agent whom Obito deeply distrusts. Obito recognizes that Black Zetsu monitors him and serves Madara’s interests. 160 161
  • White Zetsu — Intelligence network, scouts, and frequent source of mockery regarding Obito’s fixation on Rin and Kakashi. 4 48 136
  • Zabuza Momochi — Defeated and coerced into joining the rebuilt Akatsuki as its seventh member. 182

Story Role / Major Arcs

Manipulation of Akatsuki

Obito appears as “Madara” after Yahiko’s death and attempts to frame the tragedy as proof that Nagato must embrace the Eye of the Moon Plan. He hides his role in exploiting Hanzō and Danzō’s ambush while positioning himself as Nagato’s guide. 2

When Nagato becomes openly defiant, Obito avoids direct confrontation and chooses to observe how far Nagato has developed the Rinnegan’s power. 19

Conflict with Orochimaru and Nagato

Obito becomes alarmed when Kabuto seeks his blood for Orochimaru. Fearing that Impure World Reincarnation could reveal he survived Kannabi Bridge, he seemingly kills Kabuto and burns a decoy blood scroll. 49 50

He attacks Orochimaru’s Land of Rice stronghold, but Nagato’s group escapes and Konan’s explosive trap destroys the base around him. Tobi shields Obito from the blast, though he is injured and humiliated. 51

Nine-Tails Rebellion

After secretly hearing Kakashi discuss Kushina’s imminent childbirth, Obito identifies the weakened Nine-Tails seal as an opportunity to attack Konoha. 136

He abducts Kushina, extracts and controls the Nine-Tails with his Sharingan, and summons it into Konoha to devastate the village. 145

Minato confronts him and disrupts Kamui with Sage Mode and Frog Kata. Obito’s plea of “Minato, Sensei” exposes his identity shortly before Minato recognizes him beneath the shattered mask. 150 151

Hashirama Transplant and Retraining

Near death after escaping Minato, Obito transplants all available Hashirama artificial bodies into himself. He survives the uncontrolled cellular growth through sheer willpower and resolves not to become Nagato’s tool. 158

He implants Madara’s spare Sharingan, conceals the chest growth with a branded metal mask, removes the Demonic Statue from Nagato’s reach, and undergoes two months of intensive training. 160 161

Duel with Nagato

Obito confronts Nagato after their one-year agreement, accusing him of betrayal during the Nine-Tails attack. Nagato reveals that failed Impure World Reincarnation experiments exposed Obito’s survival and allowed him to deduce the truth behind the Madara persona. 163

Obito battles with Kamui, Wood Release, regeneration, Izanagi, and the Uchiha Flame Formation, but Nagato counters his tactics through Eternal Mangekyō perception, Planetary Devastation, Super Shinra Tensei, shared vision, and Asura Path firearms. 164 166 167 168

Defeated and unable to continue, Obito reveals Madara’s manipulation of Nagato and the origins of the Rinnegan. Nagato agrees to a conditional alliance but demands that Obito rebuild Akatsuki as restitution for Yahiko’s death and the destruction of the original organization. 169

Senju Kashyapa and Akatsuki Recruitment

Because his crippled leg makes the Madara persona less believable, Obito creates the identity Senju Kashyapa, allegedly Hashirama’s surviving son with both Senju and Uchiha powers. 170

He begins rebuilding Akatsuki under Nagato’s conditions: ten members, including himself, with broadly defined “Hokage-level” power. 170

Obito later defeats Zabuza, gives him the South Dipper ring, and forces him to join Akatsuki. He then considers recruiting Kazekage Rasa to complete the organization’s roster. 182
