History

Standing before the tournament

Shrek maintained a ten-thousand-year record of dominance in the All-Continent Elite Soul Master Tournament. The Three Native Mainland Kingdoms had historically afforded it special status because it had once helped resist the Sun Moon Empire, tolerating even its frequent disregard for local laws while pursuing evil soul masters 10 11.

Its leadership and students regarded Shrek’s reputation, glory, and role as an evil-soul-master suppressor as central to the academy’s identity. Lin Yuan and Jing Hongchen repeatedly challenged this image after Shrek treated Sun Moon Academy casualties as insignificant while demanding punishment for harm done to its own students 3 4 9.

Tournament defeat

During the tournament, elder Xuanzi intervened after Xu Sanshi was defeated by Lin Yuan and demanded that Lin Yuan’s qualification be revoked. Huang Jinxu and the Sun Moon side condemned this demand as a double standard, citing Shrek’s earlier killing of Lin Xi and Chen Fei 3 4.

Xu Sanshi later died after Xuanzi’s attempt to assist him worsened his damaged meridians. Ma Xiaotao was subsequently sent into battle against Lin Yuan, darkened into a Dark Phoenix, and died after Xuanzi sealed her soul power, allowing the Hades Sword’s Withering Force to consume her life force unchecked 5 7 10 13.

After Ma Xiaotao’s death, Huo Yuhao, Dai Yueheng, Bei Bei, and He Caitou opposed surrender. Xuanzi nevertheless ordered Shrek’s withdrawal to preserve its remaining students, ending its tournament reign and granting the championship to the Sun Moon Royal Soul Engineer Academy 11.

Institutional decline

Xuanzi returned to Shrek missing his right arm and with his cultivation devastated by Gu Yuena’s Silver Dragon Spear. The Golden Tree stabilized him, but he could no longer use his Soul Core and was reduced to a Pseudo-Titled Douluo with roughly ten years remaining 17 18.

The deaths of Xu Sanshi and Ma Xiaotao damaged Shrek’s prestige and external support. Xu Sanshi’s ties to the Black Tortoise Sect and the Dou Ling imperial family made his death a political liability, while Shrek’s inability to protect its own students weakened its image of reliability 18.

Mu En began prioritizing institutional survival over retaliation. He sought to help Song Lao reach Rank 98, restricted Xuanzi’s access to the Sea God Pavilion, and acknowledged that Soul Guidance Devices had become an unavoidable development Shrek could no longer dismiss 19 34.

Failed reconciliation and the Mingdou Mountains conflict

Shrek proposed peace talks and an exchange-student program with the Sun Moon Royal Soul Engineer Academy, initially offering two 50,000-year soul bones as compensation for Xuanzi’s actions. Jing Hongchen rejected the proposal’s terms and demanded that Shrek come to the Sun Moon Empire instead 33.

Mu En later forced Shrek to accept doubled Soul Bone compensation and a public apology from Xuanzi, threatening to abandon Xuanzi if he refused. The concession reflected Shrek’s need for Soul Guidance knowledge despite its previous hostility toward the Sun Moon Empire 34.

At the Mingdou Mountains negotiations, Mu En, Yan Shaozhe, and Xuanzi confronted Jing Hongchen, Lin Yuan, and Gu Yuena. The encounter became an open battle: Xuanzi died after his Soul Core explosion failed to kill Lin Yuan, while Mu En was killed when Gu Yuena’s Silver Dragon Spear devoured his Soul Core, life force, and Radiant Holy Dragon origin 39 42 43.

Aftermath

The deaths of Mu En and Xuanzi eliminated Shrek’s two greatest remaining combatants. Shrek sealed news of Mu En’s death to prevent panic, while Yan Shaozhe escaped after burning his origin 43 44.

Within three months, Shrek had become markedly more cautious. It began coordinating with the various empires when handling evil soul masters and no longer acted with its former confidence toward the Sun Moon Empire 45.

Institutional stance and practices

• Evil soul master suppression — Shrek presents itself as an institution responsible for eliminating evil soul masters. Xuanzi used this justification to demand Lin Yuan’s surrender, despite Jing Hongchen arguing that Ma Xiaotao’s uncontrolled conduct more closely resembled that of an evil soul master 9 12.
• Soul Guidance Devices — Shrek historically allocated far fewer resources to its Soul Guidance Department than to its Martial Soul Department. Mu En later recognized this as a strategic mistake and argued that Soul Guidance Devices could eventually threaten even the strongest Soul Masters 34.
• Student-first rhetoric — Xuanzi justified the tournament surrender as necessary to preserve Shrek’s future generation, though several students viewed it as abandoning the academy’s glory and the deaths of their comrades 11.
• Internal disillusionment — Xiao Xiao withdrew from Shrek after concluding that the academy had failed to recognize sacrifices made for its glory. Her decision also caused Huo Yuhao to reconsider Shrek’s lack of action regarding his assassination attempt and Tang Ya’s disappearance 46.
