Nature and Use

Chakra is the energy cultivated by ninja. Through ninjutsu, it can be used for destruction, transformation, healing, and other effects beyond ordinary human ability. 43

Menma's reconstruction of ancient history attributes chakra's spread to Kaguya Ōtsutsuki, who intended for humanity to cultivate it before harvesting them through the Divine Tree. Hagoromo later founded the Ninja Sect and divided the Divine Tree's chakra into the nine Tailed Beasts. 44 45

Chakra Control

Chakra control determines whether a user can efficiently perform techniques rather than merely possessing large reserves.

• Tree climbing and water walking are foundational control exercises; mastering them improved Menma's use of the Three-Body Technique. 5
• Great Breakthrough requires chakra to be gathered in the lungs and throat, then injected into exhaled air; greater input produces greater force. 7

Menma possesses Extreme Wind Nature, a rare specialization that makes corresponding ninjutsu easier to learn and more powerful. Its trade-off is complete incompatibility with all other elemental natures. 14

Chakra Reserves

Menma's reserves are unusually large even before the addition of Six-Tails chakra.

• He uses less than five percent of his chakra for his first Great Breakthrough. 8
• Kushina states that his reserves exceed those of most Chunin; Minato compares them favorably with Kakashi's normal usable chakra. 8
• The Double Four Symbols Seal suppresses his detectable reserves to roughly ordinary Chunin level, helping him pass as merely talented rather than exceptional. 17

Sealing Arts

Four Symbols Seal

Kushina's sealing work is central to Menma's chakra management.

• The Double Four Symbols Seal restrains most of his chakra while retaining a practiced emergency release. 17
• Its outer seal has a deliberate opening that lets limited chakra leak out, concealing Menma's true reserves. 17
• The seal also contains Saiken's chakra after Menma acquires it, preventing the foreign chakra from immediately becoming a danger. 35
• The gradual leakage of Six-Tails chakra stimulates Menma's body to continuously produce more chakra. 35

Yin Seal

The Uzumaki Clan's Yin Seal stores excess chakra in the body and can release it in a sustained flow. 35

Menma concludes that chakra-based techniques may be disadvantaged against the Ōtsutsuki because they wield the same power system at a far higher level. He therefore seeks yokai arts and physical combat methods as complementary means of fighting them. 46 49
